Bones Kickstarter #2 Discussion

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure I need any cavalry minis, but I am beginning to grow on the second expansion. If anything fun opens up, it'll get added. I already bumped my pledge for paint.

One possible use for spikey McHoofenstein might be to lop off the rider's head and make him a headless horsegent. I don't know if I've seen one in the store.

@naponatom As a note, is a pity that the sacrifice girl is again removed from the set. (ReaperBryan has something against virgins? It is a life-style choise you know... Nothing to be ashamed of. :;): )

That "random encounter" hidden stretch goal was pretty sweet. Something I'd like to see this KS would be weird WWII troops, like uniformed undead, or even other Halloween themed minis- animated creatures, experiments, even more decor and terrain features. Things to use as objective markers, you know? I don't know why they don't make bones versions the victim that came with that sets. Having minis to rescue for the Warlord game would be awesome.
And besides, what's Halloween without victims?

Not a thing against virgins. It's about victimisation and the depiction thereof - and It's not something I wish to debate here. Just saying why. basically - 1) there's no reason for victims to always be presented as female and nude, and 2) we certainly do not need the negative publicity attacking our campaign for promulgating such a trope.

Besides, hands down, the best victim to use in either case is not the one we have in metal, but rather a PC or NPC mini that is significant to your players.

I may have to find a way to do that now. Pathfinder does have Dullahan and headless horseman type creatures. I now must plot this out to do it.

Meh. Someone over on the Kickstarter comments said he's using the pledge manager as a popularity contest, clicking "10" for the minis he likes most and wants to see more of down to "2" for the ones he likes least.

It's not a miscommunication. He seems to know what the pledge manager is *for*. He just wants to deliberately skew things towards what he wants to see more of.

It strikes me as unethical and condescending. Surely talking to Reaper using words is a better way to communicate one's interests than gaming what is meant to be a helpful calculator.

Yeah, I mentioned something about that a little while back...

From the Kickstarter comments:

@David Scharf - it is not permanently locked until until some time after the KS ends. you can make as many changes as you like to your selections now, it does not forcibly make any changes to the actual KS pledge.

The Pledge button does take you back to the Project page here at Kickstarter.com to adjust your pledge, but you do not have to complete that change.

@David - yes and no. We're not real-time tracking the data, but when you hit recalculate, we are saving what you have selected, as a way of gauging interest. We do not see what you specifically have put in, we see that X backers selected Option A.

So far we have looked at that data once, this morning, to se what activity was like overnight. We will probably check it 2-3 times a day, and look for massive shifts.

The part I bolded in the second quote makes me think that doing a "popularity contest" wouldn't actually help. If Backer A selects 1 Mouselings set, and Backer B selects 10 Mouselings sets, Reaper may only see that 2 backers have selected Mouselings use that data to determine what we want.

I guess it's a question of if the data Reaper is collecting from the pledge manager is binary or not.

It's BOTH! We see X Backers selected Y copies. We place more weight on the X than the Y, in our meetings. So this guy has artificially skewed a few of the Y's, but not outside of standard deviations. Even if a large group of people do it, we're still more focused on the X, because x10 is assumed to be a n e-bay reseller, and not an accurate gauge of true consumer interest.

Here's an oddball question that just came to me...

Are the bones in this KS the same bones material that we all know and love, or is there any chance that they are of a newer, slightly different formula/chemical composition/whetever that might alleviate some of the minor problems with last year's KS?

Doesn't matter to me either way, I'M ALL IN!!

....but was curious just the same

I think they're adapting their designs to the material rather than the other way around, so the Bones in this KS should steer clear of any shortcomings the last lot had.

That you are evil I know. I didn´t know you have the "enjoying-the-face-of-your-players-while-they-realize-that-it-is-their-love-ones-on-the-altar" kind of evil.

But now that I am thinking about, the signs are already there: Only a guy with this EVILNESS in himself could create a plan to take all my money and yet make me believe I am happier now that I did it, and yet pose as a Great Guy! My enemy is my credit limit, not the man behind the master plan...

You are not just Evil, you are a Evil Genius!

^_^

(No! Seriously, Thank you!)

Still no email reply from Ed about pledging via paypal after the end of the 2nd KS. Maybe that isn't an option this time? Maybe I need to email someone else? Or message them here on the forums?

My avatar history over 10 years:

1) a skeletal Dungeon Master. (miniature made by Froggy the Great)_SkeleGM.jpg

2) A depiction of myself as a Miniature

3) Me destroying a town (current)

2 of those are monsters, and it surprises you that I'm evil?

Arguably 3. 2 are more obvious.

Just a few random thoughts.

Several people (Reaper peeps and artists/sculptors) have teased about all the awesome new sculpts still hidden in unrevealed stretch goals. What will happen to these sculpts if they aren't reached/revealed? Will they be done in metal? Will they be secreted away until Bones III: The Bones Ultimatum?

And the rest of my thoughts disappeared... maybe they'll come back to me.

"I also think Reaper has structured this one better for themselves, with the core set and the expansion. They can limit how many minis go into the core set, and make us pay more for the expansion."

Well, I can see why Reaper would like this, but not consumers. I don't go in for the philosophy of "let's pay more so we can keep the store in business". As long as there is demand, someone will arise and fill it. It's one of the many great things about capitalism.

Also, Reaper has said that there's a point when they would have started losing money with the 1st kickstarter because of how many minis would have been in the vampire package, had gotten too successful. I for one would rather they not lose money, and if they do that by limiting the number of minis they put in their core package while also providing really awesome expansion packages, then that's what they have to do. Sure, we may not get 224 minis for $.30 each this time around, or whatever the numbers ended up being, but it will still be a lot (way more than most of us can decently paint in a year) for way lower than we'd ever get them retail.

Interesting, as an eBayer/speculator, I'd only buy what I believe will have a great demand - and - I can flip for a reasonable profit. Speculators tend to accept some risk, but, generally, work on the basis on "I know this will sell" before plunking down cash that is tied up for 11 to 14 months. I would think the number of X at 10 for Y would also be indicative of demand for said product because, for example, if I think product Z is going to be a hot seller for those who missed the KS2 - and - the price is right, I would represent that much more demand.

Besides the bag of bases, I'm currently not pledging more than 2x of anything (may go to 4x, not sure yet). I do not believe, this time around, there will be any money to be made off of the KSer - so I'm just getting things I want to play with. (yes, there will be ways to generate a "profit" off of the KS2, however, the investment of money over the length of time with the guesstimated percentage return and the competition that will surely be in on this one - isn't worth it for me - and - money can be made doing other things quicker/easier/more of a return with the same cash that would be tied up here)

If you're willing to look at a different company's minis, nearly every mounted figure from Thunderbolt Mountain (which is Tom Meier, legendary founding sculptor of Ral Partha) comes with an on-foot version:

http://www.thunderboltmountain.com/collections/all/25mm-legendary-figures

These figures are true 25-mm scale, so a little delicate by modern standards, but they are jaw-droppingly beautiful and detailed.

He also has some 30-mm scale elves, but only some of the mounted ones have on-foot equivalents.
