Bones Kickstarter #2 Discussion

Recommended Posts

Judging by his tone, it sounds like Bryan is a little agitated by the comments this morning, too. I hope my vocalization of my grievances and disappointments isn't detracting from anybody's experience of this KS. They're just personal feelings, and I don't mean to imply that Reaper's doing anything wrong. I'm heavily mentally (and monetarily!) invested in this thing, though, and my wife is getting sick of me yammering about it all the time. So when I react to something, I react here, or on the comments, and it's not always a "hurrah." When they hit something that I want dead on, though, I'll be sure that my cries of joy are heard loudly.

I hope Reaper doesn't go too crazy/overboard with the final unlock. I don't really like minis that are too big, they just look out of scale on the gaming table next to an adventuring party. The colossal figures from WotC look terrible next to human sized minis, and Kaladrax is too large as well. I find diminishing returns visually when figures get much past huge.

Still, I expect they will finish big, so a Tiamat or a Chinese Dragon, a Linnorm, a Roc, or falstius' suggestion of a very large treant would all be welcome. Personally, I'd like to see a mighty mammoth with a howdah designed for war, decked out for war, maybe even with a contingent of savage warriors with spears and axes to crew the beast.

A war mammoth or mastadon would certainly get my vote!

So, question: These paints, they last a really long time, right? So if I got two sets of them, I could save one for when I run out of the first? 1.50$ a tube seems like a really good price, & since I've been using artist's acrylics until now, I do need to get my primaries & some B&W.

On a similar note, how do they mix? I am a fan of mixing my own palette...

I have some paints from the original release of the MSP line 10+ years ago that are still workable. Every now and then check them for evaporation and add a little distilled water or acrylic medium to keep them open. As far as mixing, they mix beautifully.

I started painting minis with artist acrylic as well, and eventually transitioned over. Because Reaper's paints are non-toxic, there are some colors you won't get to match 100% with some of the colors you're used to from the artist acrylics that use more hazardous pigments: Titanium White, Cadmiums, etc, but there are still some very close analogs. If you do a forum search there are a number of threads that will give very close matches between artist acrylic paints and the MSP lines.

EDIT: Added link below

Here's the link to the Painting Tips and Advice forum where you will find enough information about Reaper paints to make your head explode.

Titanium White is not hazardous.

The Cadmiums are, big time. But not Titanium White. It's used in toothpaste and Twinkie filling (not that that's much of an endorsement).

I know that the question of a trade thread was asked and denied, but there was question of whether discussion of places to arrange trades was ok. Was this ever addressed?

here's the deal...

yall don't stay on topic.

if you were allowed a thread to discuss where you wanted to trade, it would not stay a discussion on where to trade, it would morph into what is available to trade (and who knows what else) and then we'd be yanking it.

So, no, it won't be allowed.

There was already some discussion back thread about places people have used in the past, such as bartertown, etc shortly after Ladystorm broke the news about no trade threads for this KS.

if you are interested in trading, put it discretely in your sig file.

for example: I am trading my Bones on <link to site>

Ok, fair enough. ::):

ETA>> OOoh!! Bathalians!! Big, squidly monsters, yes!!! I was hoping for those. Of course, my wallet is not quite so happy....

Yes. 100 times this.

As one who voiced support of Bathalians in the KS earlier, I have to say that I'm a little let-down. The Bathalians I had in my head were not-mindflayer types. Stuff that could be used for D&D. I know there's already a caster-type in bones, but I thought it would be pretty cool to have a melee-type to go with him. The big ones, who remind me of starcraft hydralisks, are generally not something I'm interested in.

Fair enough. I'm happy, because these were the type of Bathalians I wanted, but I can understand wanting the others. They're also pretty cool.

My only problem is that they are in CE3, which is not currently paid for in my pledge. As feared, Reaper is starting to push me into hard decisions. ::(:

That is a very cool squid head, GP.

Sabith: you're nowhere near as bad as the entitled special snowflakes who threaten to pull out cause this is just a money grab by Reaper, how dare they provide free things like bases when we're only interested in minis, yadda yadda. It's still aggravating for someone to piss on the parade when other people are ecstatic, though. Maybe a simple "not for me, maybe next goal" would be better?

I mean, to be honest, nothing I've seen since Anhurians has interested me, and I couldn't give two flops about the under seas beasties. I don't really need a Street Shark! But a lot of people are loving them, and I know there will be other, awesome things that I will love - and if, at the end, I look around and find it's not worth the $400 I'm already in, I'll pledge down or back out.

Ugh, I feel for Bryan. At least I can throw my hands up and walk away - he can't even have a morning with his family without ten tons of backer angst because he didn't update on the stroke of 9. FRAK.

This one has been on the desk for a long time. I really like the sculpt, but the cast is a pain as I find most of the older human sized Bones models. The Face was atrocious. Luckily he has a big hat. The photos are washed out but give a good idea of how he looks. He is too shiny for my tastes as the newer Testors Dullcote doesn’t seem to work as good as it used to. Unsure how I ended up going from a coal black duster to green, other than I had too much green paint out for the Marines I was trying to get off the shelf of shame.

One down and thousands to go! 😀

Bad photos, bad Bones cast, and tabletop paint job of Balto Burrowell the Gnome Wizard. Painted this one up as my sons kid character in hero kids. Fuego is a young kid who can cast some fire spells and has survived three adventures and he was on his own in the last one.

I am really beginning to loath these older human sized minis, but this is the closest I had to a human child for his character. Fairly simple base coat, washes, and highlights. I was having a lot of problems with my skin tone paints being too thin (even after several minutes on the vortex mixer). I guess that is the pit fall of no painting for months outside of terrain.

So here they are. The Ogre Squad. You can see the WIP here.

I love how nonchalant and casual this guy looks.

especially when compared to this guy.

The oldest of my ogres. Metal and unfinished for years because I was just never happy with him.

      another angry ogre
fond of the face(s) on this guy and also the pig. The rope on the barrel was a little frustrating though. It had a mold line right down its length and even though I wasn't doing much line cleaning for these guys that was both a hard one to fix and a hard one to ignore.

the bones black ogre has the best grumpy ogre face. He painted up nicely with very little clean up to ignore.

the other metal ogre Kagunk and his amazing shield. This guy sat just primed for a good long while as I just was never sure how to handle the shield face. The older chieften's club face was easier since it was always going to look like wood, but this I had to think about a bit. I think it works pretty well.

a few attempts at a group shot. Bigger minis are hard to keep all in focus at once.
There it is then. There are a couple of details I see I still need to do and the metal chieftains need to be sealed. But otherwise that is it for this lot. I did by the other ettin in bones and I might order the other ogre leader and I think I have a bones half ogre around somewhere.  If I paint them I may update this with new squad members. We will see.

My waste paint receptacle for my ogre squad. Nothing special or exciting but he's done too.
      probably his best side here.

This side no so much. I don't know think he translated into bones as well as some of the others like the ogres. But then, he's just a mook so who cares.

Oops! Looks like I hurt his feelings. He'll feel better when he's amongst his metal brethren. He has a much better base than they do.

A dumpster.  I started painting it as part of Aaron Lovejoy's blending class.  Then had a ton of fun weathering it.
