The Demon Lord of the Minotaurs is beefy.

That minotaur has definitely locked in my Core Expansion Set 2 pledge. Well, to be honest, the dwarf riding a bear did that. But still!

Oh gosh, that minotaur lord is going to be (no pun intended) an absolute beast to paint. So many gorgeous tiny details. And buckles....

Hmm... Not sure how I feel about the Minotaur Lord. As a concept hes awesome, but to me he has a very strong feel of being a 3D sculpt, in an uncanny valley kind of way. Its a tricky halfway point - he doesnt have the exaggerated details of a hand-sculpted piece that makes them their own style, but also doesnt have the detail Im used to in top-shelf 3D artwork.

 

Very interested to see how the not-Slaad comes out, though. Very cool.

I am stil pages behind in catching up, but had a few questions about the word "grognard."

 

Since "grognard" actually *is* French, can I assume it is pronounced "gro-NYARD" rather than "grogg-nard"?

 

Also, is it actually a term of approbation? Or merely descriptive? Who uses it?

 

What is the definition exactly? I can work out the basic idea from context, but if there are subtleties I am missing them.

And I was sitting there imagining a gelatinous cube in a Christmas sweater and...

 

Okay Klawzie. I may now have to figure out a way to make or paint on something like an oversized Christmas sweater on a cube...

 

I would just have my wife knit one. modify a baby bootie pattern and BAM! your done, its like one nights work for her.

I wouldnt say its really used in a directly approbative sense, only indirectly. It is used largely as per the French definition (an old veteran soldier; specifically of the grenadiers of the Imperial Guard; an old complaining soldier) but directed towards geeks. In other words, it generally describes a venerable but cantankerous older male geek, often with a beard, particularly of the RPG or wargaming variety - It can be a minor insult, describing someone as old fashioned and set in their ways, but is often used in a fond manner.

 

And as far as Im aware it is not usually pronounced "gro-NYARD", although its one of those words thats encountered more frequently in text than in speech so others might disagree.

woohoo! Glad I got to see that update before going to bed. Core Expansion #2 has had something I really wanted in each reveal, so I'm definitely getting it. Heck, as cool as Baphomet is he's just gravy to the rest of the goodness, I'm especially delighted to be getting a frog demon and a dracolisk.

Yay, the Bones Fairy came while I was sleeping! That's quite an update. If I wasn't already in for Expansion 2 it would definitely be added at this point! Wow!

It looks computer-generated to me. Do either of them do computer sculpting?

I haven't even read the page where this conversation started, but I have only heard Americans pronounce it as "GROGG-nard".

 

Also: Wow! Expansion 2 looks amazing. It's my favorite of the three core expansions, no question.
