Reaper MSP HD Paints cracking and flaking

I've just been washing them with regular ol' hand soap--currently just whatever foam soap is in the dorm soap dispensers.

I am washing the ones I paint now, which is in contrast to my test figures. I use perfume and dye free dish soap. (Which is for my benefit, not the Bones, but I suppose it's not outside the realm of possibility that what we're cleaning figures with could account for some difference in experiences.)

I suppose that is a possibility. I've been washing mine with scented dish soap. It never occurred to me that the type of soap might make a difference.

I painted a mini with these two color specifically, and I just looked and there is no cracking. I think you might have gotten a bad batch. Weird.

One last thing to remember after washing is a thorough rinsing. If Bones are somewhat porous, then it stands to reason that soap residue can accumulate as well as anything else.

 

When I washed my bones with dish soap, I rinsed them all at the same time in a bowl, and the first rinsing had soap bubbles, the second had less, and the third even less until it felt like normal water.

I'll keep a close eye on ones I do, see if I find anything weird. So far I don't think I have, but I haven't really been looking. Maybe I just haven't hit any weird ones yet.

So I have a few Reaper colors that are cracking. Why is this? Its only a couple of colors and the same one's. Is the paint bad? Or what is going on? Is there way to fix this?

I had this problem of cracking paint when I used to apply the MSP paints too thick...but, never since I realized these paints are to be applied in many thin layers. Since then everything is just fine. Never had any problems with HD, even when applied somewhat thick(er).

 

I also read (now, where was that?) that Reaper paints will crack if they are applied over other brands...my problem happened over Vallejo polyurethane primer. I don't think this is a valid observation - I mean the tale about overlaying, because I keep using the Vallejo primer with Reaper paints without any problems, and I have just a few paints from other brands that I mix and match with Reaper, again without problems.

 

You will see also cracking if you just apply a dot of paint on your palette and let it dry...it must have to do with the medium and flow improver they use (my unsubstantiated opinion, of course!)

 

So, in my opinion, if your paint is cracking then it is too thick (unless you got a bad bottle with a problem in the ingredient composition).

I had this problem a few years back with Carnage Red. Turns out my problem was a little complex. Essentially, I was putting multiple coats of this Red on as a base coat. Because I had put it on thickly, the first layer wasnt completely dry by the time I was putting on the second layer - it looked it on the surface, but that was the skin with the interior still needing to dry completely. When paint dries, it shrinks, thus causing the cracking.

 

I figured this out trying to replicate the results... because I couldn't. Which is a real pity because the effect was actually pretty awesome, and I wanted to know how to do it again.
