I was not asking for an undead unicorn, flaming or otherwise. I had asked for a traditional unicorn with maiden rider, there aren't many unicorn minis around. He does look interesting, though I wonder how it will translate to a green. I can't imagine it looking quite so detailed, flames usually don't look great on 28 mm models. I wonder if the darker turn the minis are taking is an unconscious response to the more negative reception the elves have received in comparison to the previous sets. I shudder to think what he will do with the dead elf.

I don't get how people say they look like humans. Sure the concepts are not that different but most of the sculpts are lanky and if they were humans (or half elves) they'd all have to be anorexic with some removed ribs to have that body type.

Since the ones that have that lankyness tend to also have no hips and/or short legs they look more like uncorrected mistakes rather than intentional design, especially when they don't all have that. Also like you said the concept art doesn't look like much more than skinny people with pointy ears, and for much of the elves the concept art is still all we have to go on. (although the raider with his slightly elongated head does look different to me, and I kind of like him, even if he is holding his weapon awkwardly.)

I don't know, maybe things are rushed this time around? I'm hoping they come around next time with some halflings!

I think expectations were too high. Dwarves are pretty static in fantasy, so no real chances of changes in concept, and their Gnomes were overly cute yet elves can't really be cute by Tolkien standards (which is what most people demand) and yet can be physically different between artist (unlike Dwarves). I honestly don't think Stonehaven could have won this one as people's mental images of elves are so different and its such an ingrained concept for fantasy fans (unlike Gnomes which don't get much attention) that they were never going to get anywhere near to people's internal concepts.

Either that or Mike is really only good at sculpting short things. Which could also be the case.

I do like the trolls, though; they are big 'uns. However, they may be more dwarf/gnome-like in their body proportions, so maybe that's it?

Mike has sculpted humans before and they looked fine, including some Hockey players for another project.

However I think I do agree with the rest of what Monkeysloth posted about elves already being so well established in people's expectation.
