Questions About the Kickstarter, now that it is over

Question: I pledged $1 just to get the updates (I have enough patience to wait until these hit retail... I hope). If I want to add on the DVDs (so my order consists only of the DVDs), would I have to wait until September of next year?

@fanguad, I believe Bryan has stated that DVDs were in conjunction with the kickstarter so all orders will be sent out during that time. If I can find the post, I'll update.

Going to strike out all of what I typed. I could have sworn I saw that somewher, but I could be making it up now. I'll just keep searching, but...no luck.

The answer I got from Adrienne Hawkins is in this very thread. DVDs are going out when they fulfill KS2. I decided to use Marike's set as part of a 12 Days of Reaper order instead. I bought Anne and Jen's set some time ago.

Would they send them earlier if you only bought the DVDs? Only Reaper knows for sure.

Ah thanks. That's what I thought. I was like I don't remember bryan making a statement, but I could have sworn someone did. Sucks about the dvd, but yay, there's dvds. I'm now flip flopping between this and paint. =/

This question may have been asked before and hell I may have asked it myself and forgot.

Bases: Will they be availble for purchase before bones 2 ships.

And a follow up bases question.

Was an estimated retail price ever given on the bases? I'd like to know how much of a savings adding them to my kickstarter pledge would be over regular retail.

I need a lot of bases.

I don't know that an estimate was given, but the existing ones seem to run 12 for $5 in the 1-inch class (1" sq, 30mm round) and 6 for $5 in the 2-inch class (40mm sq, cav).

A couple of questions:

Are there any models you have in your store which (either before/during/since either KS offering) you've decided for whatever reason will absolutely not be converted to Bones? Perhaps because they're too fiddly, or not selling, or some other reason?

Currently the models in your store that are available in both metal and now Bones (let's say Ape-X for an easy example) don't have a cross link between the two options - so if you are just browsing through the full list of models and happen to see/click the metal one, there's no reference within that page to tell the user there's also a Bones version. Can this be addressed (and vice-versa for people who might prefer metal for some reason).

I backed both KS1 and KS2, so I'm interested as to which models you have in Bones now, that were pre-KS options - is there a list somewhere so I can easily see those particular ones without wading through all the KS inclusions?

(okay so it was actually a few questions)

Yes. There's a lot of models in our Metal catalog that we feel are poor candidates for Bones.

We have some ideas on how to implement something like this, but it may be a while - there's a lot that needs to be done that we consider higher priority.

The Pre-Kickstarter Bones models were SKUs 77001-77029 inclusive. All models with a SKU higher than 77029 (SKU≥77030), as well as all Pathfinder Bones and all Chronoscope Bones were made as part of the First Kickstarter. All models with a SKU higher than 77195 (SKU ≥77196) are part of the second Kickstarter. Second Kickstarter figures include Chronoscope Bones SKU≥80026 and Pathfinder Bones SKU≥89017.

Some comments on the DVDs -

As previously mentioned, painting techniques are painting techniques, they're going to apply to metal, plastic, Bones, resin, etc. miniatures. Where things get a little different is in preparation - removing mould lines, primer, or in the case of Bones, getting a first coat of something on the figure. Information on what works better for Bones is covered in a series of FAQs stickied in the Bones section of the forum.

Whenever people ask me for recommendations on DVDs for beginner and intermediate painters, the Jen and Anne DVD is one of my top picks. It is a great overview of all the major techniques used in miniature painting. The inclusion of two painters is one of the things that really sets it apart. You get to see two different approaches to most of the subjects. Also, it's not the case that you're getting two separate tutorials independently filmed but included on the same DVD. The painters will filmed in the same room together, and their back-and-forth discussion expands on the information, as well as making for something a little more interesting to watch. This one is useful to the beginner, the tabletop painter looking to improve, or the intermediate painter that wants to see how skilled painters are using some of the more advanced techniques.

Marike's DVD is a great opportunity to watch a master at work. She does cover the basic steps she uses, but there is a lot of discussion of advanced techniques and what she's doing to get her superlative results. Marike's initial techniques for getting paint on the mini are actually pretty fast, so learning her way of doing basic blends might be of interest to the tabletop painter. A lot of the other techniques on the set are likely to be of more interest to people looking to improve their display or contest level painting.

As far as is learning this stuff useful to a tabletop painter - it is my belief that you can use the theory behind many advanced techniques but with streamlined application of the paint process to improve tabletop results over what they would be otherwise. What I mean is, if you apply the theory of colour schemes, zenithal highlighting or source lighting to a tabletop figure, but using fewer steps in blending than a display painter would, you'll end up with a much nicer looking figure than if you just haphazardly wash and drybrush.

The price these are being offered at is a pretty amazing deal. Each individual DVD set normally costs $50. I already own these, or I would certainly jump on adding these to my pledge. (And as someone who was already familiar with even the more advanced techniques on the DVDs, I still have learned plenty of tips, tricks and easier or different ways of doing things by watching these. There is always something more to learn!)

I'm sure I saw it written before that we only get to lock in pledges once, but the more I read about these DVDs the more I think I should have jumped at the opportunity. Is there a process to unlock the calculator for further additions, or am I going to have to look for them at retail?

Retail, I'm afraid.

But on the bright side, you can get them immediately rather than waiting most of a year...
