...not just the recently completed Bones Kickstarter II.

We had a lot of good conversations going in the sadly locked Discussion Thread, so we should keep them going! This isn't a place for random nonsequiters and tangents... but every good conversation should have an implicit level of drift, so while we start here with Bones-type talk, we shouldn't feel obligated to keep it on that subject.

Especially since that would quickly get us exiled to the Bones forum.

But on the subject of Bones Kickstarter II, Bryan has created an official Q&A thread over in the Bones forum, and the subject of "what did we not see in this Kickstarter" came up - what stretch goals did we miss? To which Bryan replied...

What miniatures were planned, sculpted that we DIDN'T get to see? :P

That would be cheating. But in addition to the Wayne Reynolds Highland Encounter, Talin did an Encounter set.

Since off-topic discussion in that thread is discourage, I thought I would come over here for my response...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WHY GOD WHY WE MISSED TALIN ART NONONONONONONONO

Bryan's Q&A thread here: http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?/topic/52101-questions-about-the-kickstarter-now-that-it-is-over/

The massive, lamented Bones KS II thread here: http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?/topic/51617-bones-kickstarter-2-discussion/

Will Talin's Oni be coming out (either Bones or metal)...?

The art has been assigned to a sculptor but I do not know if it is for Bones or Metal.

YES. SHE MUST BE MINE, HUZZAH!

ETA: She's one I really hope gets the double treatment, Bones and metal, but if I had to pick one... mrrrgh. I think, if she's Large, I'd prefer Bones. If she's human sized, I'd prefer metal...

Bones or metal, the Oni is a definite must have for me.

Totally agreed. I'd like her in Bones as a large for price point; she'll be $10+ in metal.

I'll still get her, but in Bones I can get one for my daughter to paint, too... ^_^

Of course, in metal we'll see her before Bones III/2015...

Well, Reaper doesn't NEED a kickstarter to make a new bones figure. The had ~30 before the first one after all. We just need to convince them to get that Oni made. I need that mini.

It might be a good test case, see how well a non-kickstarted bones figure sells post kickstarters.

The art has been assigned to a sculptor! Minidom is at hand!

That said, while Reaper is more than capable of making Bones without the impetus of a Kickstarter, look at how long the process takes. Yes, we'll eventually see Bones as a self-sustaining line, not requiring Kickstarter funds to get things moving - KS2 may even have tipped it over that edge - but it was months after Bones 1 wrapped up before the rest of the original 29 were available for retail, and these were minis for which they already had the molds (thanks to Legendary Encounters).

Hopefully an additional plastic injection machine, trained personnel, and the ability to make Bones minis in Texas will cut down that wait... but I imagine it'll still be a while...

(Absolute pie in the sky, dream that little dream idea: the oni-monk is what we were working towards at the end of the KS2, and if we'd hit Cadiritih's goal of an extra $150k, she would have been added to the Core set...)

I thought it might be nice to discuss which kickstarted figures were on your personal request list.

I asked for more animals. I got a bunch (I still want some herd animals though [i'm thinking the Gorgon will be seeing double duty as Bessie the cow]).

I asked for an Ankheg, I got a beautiful one.

Chimera? Check.

Cavalry? And how!

Angels? Prayers answered!

Centaurs? (and both genders, heavily armoured, AND free in the core?) Awesome!

Bulette? Bu-yeah!

Gelatinous Cube? Sluurp!

Half price paints? Colourful!

Otyugh? Oh yeah!

And those were just the ones I remember asking for. I didn't ask for a Slaad, but I love having one. I didn't ask for a Terrasque, but I wasn't kidding when I said I'd buy one if Reaper made one. I didn't know what a Raster was, now I can't wait to get one and convince a DM to let me have one for a steed. A huge diorama I can steal pieces of whenever players are exploring ruins? Yes please.

I could go through the rest of the stuff, the vast majority of which I really like, but those are just some of the highlights.

Reaper, giving us what we want since...well, since we started asking.

Mouselings, Sophie, more giants, more dragons, scenery (modern, scifi, fantasy), scenic bases... Yay for those as requested.

However a couple of notable absences from my requests were Gauth (for the 2nd time), and supply and treasure laden pack mules/horses and carts/wagons.

Gee Girot, it's too bad I can tell you weren't at all excited or anything by what Bones II had to offer. :poke:

I totally want to see a mounted scorpion cavalry. This is a thing that must happen.

Oooh they're comin! Basically I'm creating a conversion kit for the first one and then making some sort of effort to reproduce it. Maybe I'll see if Dadcubed and I can work something out. Actually... this may have just given me a good reason to go ahead and buy a metal one so I can get going on this little venture.

Hi everyone.  I've been thinking a lot about color while painting recently.  It's been a major motivation for some of my more recent projects.  I wanted to talk about some of the things I've been doing and hoped that some of you would share your thoughts about color choice as well.

First of all, my paint collection is fairly modest.  Probably around 50.  But I'm a firm believer that you don't need a ton of different paints.  I add paints periodically to fill gaps - especially colors that I find myself struggling to mix well (purple continues to be a struggle and I need some better options).

I love the Reaper Triads - they're a great way to expand a collection and get colors that behave well together.  Also a great way to teach newer painters the philosophy behind layering.  For awhile I was running with the philosophy that I wanted to avoid mixing more than two colors at once.  Especially because it's harder to duplicate.  I was using the triads a lot as a guide while painting.

However, I have recently pushed away from using triads.  I have been playing around with more limited palettes.  Not exactly the 3 color challenge, but just really considering whether or not I need to grab a new bottle, or if I can mix what I want using something I already have.  With this philosophy, the triads clash.  So I definitely find myself grabbing the midtones most often.

I've been thinking of this as "mindfully limited palette."  Sometimes I grab the colors I know I want ahead of time, other times I'll grab a new color as I go.  Typically this involves a black and a white and then 5 or less unique colors.  Often a red, blue, yellow, and brown.  Though not necessarily the purest versions of those colors.  I might choose a greener blue.  Or a brownish red.

There's two ways I've been playing with this.  One is by leaning into a more monochromatic palette.  I have found it really fun and challenging to try to imagine the setting a mini is in and reflecting that environment in the color choices of the mini.  It's also a fun challenge to make many different shades and tones using similar colors.  This is what I had in mind while painting this Ice Witch, and Swamp Skeleton.

The other way I have been playing with these limited palettes is to try for a more unified tone, but not necessarily monochrome.  There's a painting theory behind a "mother color" where you mix a bit of one color into every other color on your palette.  While I haven't gone that far, I have found that reusing colors, even in different mixes, helps unify the piece.  Just like balancing colors across the mini.  I don't have as many good photos of this, as my best examples are the most recent minis I've been working on - really pushing color variety while using limited paints.  This Kobold is sort of like that, though he definitely is a bit more monochromatic.  I'll have to come back and add my more colorful examples.

What kind of color theory and challenges have you been playing with to motivate and push your painting?  Please feel free to share photo examples.  This has been a major source of excitement and motivation in my painting recently and I feel it's really improving my results.  I would love to see what everyone else is doing!

You know, you may be right. I could have sworn that one was a male one, but it'd be nice if it was female! Either, way, I'd like a complete set of male + female for all the elements.

I mean.... I'd also like a non-binary / androgynous set as well, but getting that stuff commercial is.... very difficult.

These guys are the truly random offerings I have wrapped up so far this year.  Many were half-finished somewhere beforehand, but I don't keep track of start dates.

To start of 2019 with hopes of a revised Mordheim, I offer another (converted) Pit Fighter to the bloody streets.

Mantic's scatter terrain from Terrain Crate

      A fat jailer from Paizo

A Dwarf Prisoner from the same Paizo set.

An iconic Rat Catch from Mega Minis.  I think Turnkey Miniatures makes it these days.

      A Barbarian porter from Frostgrave

      A Dwarf Waitress from TAG

And a converted Kislevite Archer from Warhammer parts.

Before posting I searched this section to see if there was already a discussion going on but didn't find anything. I could be wrong though. I think it also goes without saying this post and any subsequent posts will include spoilers.

I finally got around to seeing The Last Jedi, I was waiting for the crowds to die down. So I ended up in a noon showing with only five other people (mostly older folks who I can only assume also waited for the crowds to die down).

Right off the bat I want to say I'm not impressed with the new film. Rather than go on a rant about what I liked and hated though I'd prefer to start a discussion of the new film.

What did you like? What did you hate? Were you happy with the final product?
