City of Titans

Sorry for the non-miniature Kickstarter, but this is for the City of Heroes successor known as City of Titans. The project is funded now and into the last few hours, but getting a successor to CoH is something that I'm really looking forward to so I couldn't resist giving them a shout out. It's basically grown out of a group of fans trying to resurrect the game and if the final result is half as fun as City of Heroes was it'll become my MMO of choice. :)

Yeah, likewise. I never really got into an MMORPG before, but I really enjoyed City of Heroes. I just wish I'd started earlier, I only played the last couple of years even though a friend had been trying to get me to join since beta!

I played in the beta back in high school and have many fond memories of the game. I played the night after meeting who is now my wife. I played the night before my wedding. I played the night before my first child was born. I definitely miss it.

 Yay, I'm happy to meet fellow CoH/CoV players!!! Husband and I have both really missed the game as well, it was my very first MMO, and we spent many hours playing together.

We both went in for the $25 level, though we would have liked to both go in at $50, but $50 total is pushing it for us right now, and $100 was just too much. We'll just have to wait to buy the game when it comes out, but that's okay.

I am SOOO EXCITED for this! Especially the "mission crafting" they outlined in Update #50, it sounds like it'll be complicated to program, but amazing and very innovative in practice!

When the game comes out, we'll have to form a thread about it in the Off-Topic section so we can all geek out about it together. ^_^

I played CoH too, way back in the early days. I loved the feel of the game, running into a group of villains and just laying waste was so much fun. Even long after the crooks were greyed out, I'd still stop and blast purse snatchers as I was passing by. And flying? First time I got that power, I flew straight up, and up, and up, higher than the tallest buildings. Oh, and I mean at the lower level, when it was the slow moving levitate ability, so it probably took me 20 minutes to get up there. It was awesome. I stopped playing in the mid levels though, because I was never much of a team player, and it seemed most quest paths after level 20 or so always ended with team missions, like simultaneous bomb disarmings.

CoH/V is the only MMO I ever cared much for, and I played on and off from Beta until they closed, but I have absolutely no faith in the ability of anyone to create a MMO for that amount of money. 10X that would be pushing it.

The issue isn't making a MMO for that amount of money. If you read the kickstarter, the MMO is being made by volunteers and the money is just to pay for licenses for the required software.

Of course the difficulty of making a functioning MMO using volunteers is also stratospheric.

My general opinion is that video game Kickstarters are already more risky than boardgame/mini Kickstarters since the chance of a software project having schedule or budget problems or even just failing to produce a working system is quite high. And yeah, I agree that going to Kickstarter to fund an MMO is a bad idea.

I thought that I noticed you over in the comments OneBoot. If the project had longer to go I'd have had to request a digest of project creator comments! :;): Definitely need to make a thread in Off Topic when this is on the way and can patrol the City again. ::D:

Suden - I assume they must have made the game more solo friendly in later years. I only started in 2010 and one of my characters got to level 50 playing almost entirely solo (since I'd picked a server that turned out to be pretty well empty during my usual play times, but I didn't want to abandon 'home'.) I remember flying slowly all over the place when I got Hover too. Especially through The Hollows since most of the enemies were too tough for me...

I know that the nature of the development makes this sort of approach a bit of a risk. At the very least I wouldn't be surprised if timelines slipped a bit. But at the same time I think it's a pretty exciting kind of thing. If a group of fans of a game are able to get together and bring a homage to that game back to life on this scale... Well, I think that would be pretty neat. :) And I think it shows how missed CoH is that 5000 people were prepared to take that chance.

Jumping was my travel power of choice. At the higher level, it was pretty much the same as flying, it was awesome. :D

@Berik - Yeah, I popped in right before the end because I was debating whether to increase my pledge to include the $10 music option. I ended up doing so in the last few seconds (curse you slow internet!), and thankfully it went through. :) The phoenix pet would have been nice, but $30 was a bit much.

I'm really hoping that this ends up working out. I also think that 2 years is a fairly ambitious timeline, especially since they'll be building it from scratch (I haven't read everything they wrote, so I could be wrong there), but I'm holding out hope that it will be made. :)

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I preferred CoV to CoH; it felt a little more challenging, and it seemed to me at least that the average player age/maturity was little higher. But that's just me. :)

The fact that the volunteer group is still around and working on it a year after CoX was killed by NCsoft is what really impressed me. At the time, I fully expected it to be one of those grand plans that kind of fizzles out as people move on, but the fact that they're still going is awesome.

CoX was my go-to MMO for years, and there hasn't been an equivalent game sense. The other supers MMOs have all failed miserably - they have their strong points, but they're all sorely lacking. Hopefully CoT can deliver!

I played real early on, probably beta and the first year or two, a year of CoV probably.

Cosmic Anomaly was my main, energy/energy blaster. Guy in top pic, his Golden Age and Modern style costumes.

Wish I had a pic of my radioactive robot, the Moleculator rad/rad defender.
