Mantic Games - Ogre Shooters

Recommended Posts

I've just finished these today (excepting varnish and then the bases, they need tufts and weathering powder yet). Got them in the KS, nice models by Remy but not the most enjoyable painting experience (a slog, rather). Very glad to have them finished. Far less glad to need to do another six of them...

More pics on my blog (linked from my sig) along with my issues with the sculpts and some WIP for those who are interested in that sort of thing.

Those look great! Well done. It's nice to see Mantic getting some time in the Show Off.

I haven't touched my Mantic ogres yet so I have to ask. What was the big issue that you had with them?

I love these models... I just don't have much use for the gun-toting ones. Would love to get hold of the other set though (and the rock-toting trolls)!

Thanks for the compliments, guys!

I actually felt a little uncomfortable in the past when considering putting non-Reaper figures up here, so never have before. Now I feel comfortable enough to probably put up anything that's not Citadel/GW.

Remy's sculpts are so very detailed, with uncountable Werner Klocke-levels of tiny, tiny buckles and studs (that are even tinier because of the shrinking of the resin plastic that Mantic uses). Combine that with them being essentially rank & file figures (ie, lots of them rather than single figures or individuals) and their arms and weapons being across their chests so it becomes incredibly difficult to get in behind it all. They're not like, say, Space Marines where the arms can be assembled so you paint those and the chests and you just drop the gun in afterwards.

I think I'd enjoy the sword and board-types much more, but the KoW Ogre army I'm assembling at the moment needs the missile troops, and the melee contingent is filled with classic Jes Goodwin ogre sculpts (many of which were painted many years ago)...

Thank you, smokingwreckage. ::):

Darsc - they took me most of a month to get done, mostly a bit at a time on weekends since I'm usually wiped out from work during weeknights and the weekends need to be split between family, paint and gaming. :;): Got them finished today thanks to it being a public holiday here for a horse race. Now that they're done I'm happy with them, but they definitely weren't one of those projects that's pure pleasure all the way.

It's nice to be able to see clear large images of these, unlike on Mantics website <_<

The sculpts are better than I'd thought and you've done a great job with them.

You shouldn't feel uncomfortable posting GW, we're looking at your work, not judging company practices.

Aw, don't encourage him! He's a dakkanaut, there'll be space soldiers all up in here!

Just kidding, Az. This community just loves to see cool painted things, brand doesn't really matter at all. Rising tide and all that. I've already told you how awesome these guys look...but imagine running nmm over the buckles, where you need to hit them three times each :)

Scipio/Azazel is one of the mooks who inspired me to get back into painting, btw.

These look great, and a block of nine is going to be nothing short of awesome. I don't even own any Mantic miniatures, so seeing some painted up here is good by me.

Thanks guys. I'll post the Space Wolves Wolves later today, and especially for Cash, I'll post up some kind of Space Marine in a few days as well.

NMM on those buckles? Hah! A good way to go blind and/or insane. Many of them are not that well defined on the finished models - which is why I used a brighter metal tone.

A small update - finished the bases on these guys after finally getting a day warm enough to spray them. Paint-on Vallejo varnish kept leaving some non-matt areas. Hurrah for Testors Dullcote!

Unhappy with my newest can of Army Painter matte varnish (going on more glossy than my first can did); I've got a can of Dullcote sitting in a shipping warehouse somewhere.

These last few weeks have been very busy IRL so very little has been painted. I did however manage to whip this up the other day.

The little vampire. aka Vampire Halfling from Kings of War: Vanguard's Undead Warband Booster, by Mantic Games. Off to count some blood sausages. Or maybe slurp some black pudding. Oh, how he longs to again be able to have some hot cross buns...but they burn his mouth so...

For some reason my camera did not want to focus properly on the face.

      Printlines?! Printlines!?

What is it with "premium" resin minis and what looks suspiciously like printlines? Has someone failed at the clean-up-of-the-master-print-stage or is it something else that makes such lines a thing? Has someone rushed and cut corners? Why would you release a premium resin model like this?
You can say a lot about Mantic starting out with cheap, "no brand" minis, but that is simply no longer true. Single, normal size resin models clock in at the €10-15 range retail price, the four model booster is a £30 / €40 / $45 box. That is premium pricing. Well, maybe at the lower end of premium but still, premium pricing.
When they charge a premium price, I expect a premium product. Print lines = sloppy quality control. = not premium.
Apart from the print lines on the cape, it is a good mini. I cannot abide the square bases they use for Vanguard, so I printed a 25mm round for it.

Fe fi fo fum, here come the Giants!

Ignore the bases, they are temporary until the Sons of Behemat codex releases and I know what I can proxy them as.

First up we have Devin Townsend...er, the Kings of War Giant.

Then the former Otherworld Giant, now produced by Crooked Dice Games.

And a very iconic piece of loot:

This is one of Mantic's earliest metal minis, the "limited editon" Orc Shaman from 2011. It was AFAIK not available by itself, but added to army boxes, deals and so forth and I believe I got this from the first Kings of War kickstarter in 2012. Or an army box with orcs.
Today, it is on their website and can be had by redeeming 25 mantic points through their points scheme. It was known for a while as "Wip the Half-Caste" but now is back to "Orc shaman" I suspect the "Wip the half-caste" name is some sort of internal Mantic joke.

I must admit I have always found this model to be rather busy and difficult to read. There seems to be so much going on.

On my quest for a Legions of the Dead full painted army for Saga : Age of Magic, I just finished :
      - a Behemoth (Colossal Skeleton from Reaper)
      - 2 flying creatures (skeleton demon from Ral Partha)
      - 2 quadrupede creatures (Skeletal War Dog and Handler from Ral Partha with Giant Skeleton Rats from Mantic)

      Next... Bowmen ?

I don't do WIP's very often and I'm well into a couple of these guys. But I added a couple more as I started to base the first few so I figured I might as well. Maybe it will help me keep my focus.
We have the 3 bones ogres from a kickstarter or two ago, the bones black preview ogre, metal Kagunk 2, and the bones 4 ettin. I may decide to add metal ogre chieftain (aka kagunk 1) as well as he is half finied on the shelf anyway, and metal Norr'Okk, if I can ever figure out what to do about his head.
Also considering ordering the newer ogre chieftain, but we will see.
