And that's a wow I can't believe someone has the stones to start a kickstarter to raise money for an idea of a project rather than an actual proper project.

 

This is just asking for money to back a marketing scheme. Skyrocket Digital, the company the creators have associated themselves with in the intro, is a marketing company and not involved in any kind of production itself.

 

They're trying to set themselves up as an unneeded middleman in charge of a marketplace where they get to take money from both the creative artists and customers. Cornering the digital printing market like EBay did for online auctions or Kickstarter has done for online crowdfunding.

 

I don't understand why anyone would want to pay to help put these people in that position. To my thinking, the evolution should be more organic. Sure eventually one company or organization might become dominant, but I don't see the benefit of giving financial aid to back anyone at this early stage.

Mathematically speaking, it is a reasonable idea for a given value of reasonable. It's presumably a value of reasonable very close to zero, but still.

3D printing will be viable. Just not now. The fine detail isn't there yet for mini's. You still get that "layered" look to it that needs to be smoothed down.

Well they're never going to fund it anyways unless they do something drastic so I'm not worried about it. The more explanations they give in their kickstarter chat, the more confused I get. It makes for a nice puzzle.

The actual idea is quite cool and I'm certain that eventually there will be some websites offering this sort of thing, but the economics of this project seem all wrong. I just doubt whether there's enough demand for customised 3D printed figures to sustain a $35 / figure estimated cost. And it doesn't help that there aren't more examples of just what the models offered in their various packages will look like.

 

Really I think if your the is to end up being the middleman operating the software for this kind of thing then that's one thing. But this seems to basically amount to crowdfunding the middleware between production and design, which seems a pretty hard sell for a Kickstarter.
