Husband and I are getting back to watching Natsume's Book of Friends, which we tend to watch an episode or two of before wandering off to look at other anime. I've actually kind of missed it, it's like a warm, fuzzy blanket after NGE. ^_^

Made it to roughly the halfway point of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, and so far I'm honestly a little disappointed, I'm finding I prefer the story changes the anime studio made in the first version.

It still has 20ish episodes left to change my mind, but I think this is going to be the Sailor Moon situation all over again.

I had the same thing with Fullmetal. I enjoyed the first series I watched much more. The ending was a bit trippy but kinda cool, however I felt it had a much deeper emotional impact that FMA: Brotherhood. Brotherhood was cool because, hey more fullmetal - but, so much more emotion in the first series I watched.

Yeah.... I got my hands on some of the early issues of Sailor Moon and sat down all excited to go for it... and was so underwhelmed I just got rid of the beginning collection. Still have to properly see all of the anime (I've only caught episodes here and there), but I know I like it better as anime vs manga. It might get better towards the end, of course, but...

Same thing happened to me with Card Captor Sakura, only moreso. Really enjoyed the first few episodes I caught of "Cardcaptors" (the American remix show of the series), so when I realized that the original CCS was different from CC, I ended up devouring the series as it was meant to be seen. Then I set about buying the boxed set of the manga and was like, "....there is no substance here. Scenes that impacted me greatly in the anime are watery at best in the manga. This is the turning point in the character's arc and it comes and go with barely a panel...."

I got about halfway through the manga, and I felt it was still quite bland and lifeless, so if it did improve it left it very late.

Surprised to hear that about the Card Captor manga, not read it myself, but I thought the anime series was pretty much prefect.

Yeah, that's it entirely. I think in the end Brotherhoods plot will make more sense, but so far it has nothing like the heart the first show had.

My biggest disappointment so far have been the Homunculus,

losing the connections some of them had to other characters and becoming merely super-powered henchmen seems like such a waste

I've come over all nostalgic. I think after I've finished Brotherhood, I'm going to dig out Sailor Moon, CCS and the original Fullmetal Alchemist and give them a good rewatch.

I am kinda surprised about CCS. Being a CLAMP piece, I would have figured the manga to be quite full of detailed story. I personally never got into it when it was being showed, but I don't normally care for the whole magical Girl show, except Magical girl Lyrical Nanoha. That one appealed to me.

Did someone here recommend Yowapeda/Yowamushi Pedal? I'd never have given an anime about competitive cycling a second thought and the first few episodes have been a delight. So - if it was someone here, thank you!

EDIT:
I forgot to comment on CCS.

I was only delivered the boxed set of books 4-6 because Amazon was out of stock of 1-3. So I read those and was very disappointed, cancelling my order for the other boxed set. I'd have to see if I kept the manga and re-read it to see if I could give concrete examples, but I stand pretty firm on the idea that the anime is better. Of course, the anime takes 12 volumes of manga and turns them into 70 or so episodes, plus two movies. And that's not all extra minutes of lingering gazes, extended giggling, and hair and sakura blossoms in the wind.

Soooo... Husband and I just finished watching Evangelion the other day.

And boy howdy, did the last two episodes ever take a hard sideways corkscrew into Crazy town, located smack dab in the center of Bizarre county.

After we scratched our heads in befuddlement for awhile, I went to Wikipedia to see if the written summary made any more sense, and discovered that there was a film remake of the last two episodes.

We watched that today.

And while it certainly explained things better than the original ending, it still went real weird toward the end. My brain experienced the equivalent of a car engine being thrown from Drive into Reverse while going down the freeway when the animation switched over to live action.

As for how I felt about it, I think the words of one critic sums it up perfectly: "a dark, brutal, psychedelic orgy of sex and violence that culminated in the mass extinction of humanity set to an optimistic J-pop song with lyrics about suicide."

I just...it...arghblah. *clutches head*

If you'll excuse me, I think I need to go find some mind bleach now.

*goes and watches cute fuzzy kitten videos for an hour*

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I did really enjoy the series for the most part! It was really just the ending that I disliked so strongly.

I liked the original ending, confusing as it was. I'm weird like that.

... However, anything is a warm blanket compared to NGE. Personally, I like to watch something like Dominion Tank Police to clean it from my brain.

You were suppose to. Nanoha, much like My Little Pony, started out as a typical Magical Girl anime but suddenly got a huge male following. Soon, the creators started switching the stories to meet the new audience. Or, at least, that's what I was told by my friend when he was showing me the series when it first came out...

I have re-read so much manga this month. Appleseed, Dominion, Black Magic, Cresent Moon and now I'm half way through Akira. This makes me watch a bunch of old anime while I'm waiting for new stuff from Netflix.

Speaking of stuff from Netflix, I watched Maid-Droid yesterday. I will now make sure to read full descriptions of things and check the genre before adding it to my queue.

I had to check this on Wikipedia and reading the literal translation of the title was enough to make me laugh.

Finished off some series recently:

Kyoukai no Kanata/Beyond the Boundary. Excellent If you like the modern day monster hunters/exorcist genre I highly recommendd it. If you don't I still recommend it.

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai NEXT. I liked the first series a lot, this thankfully didn't fall into the usual routine of inferior sequal.

Galilei Donna. After a bit of a shakey lead into the end the actual ending was a big improvement. Overall I'd say the series was only OK to good though.

Unbreakable Machine Doll: Again, really only OK. Some great moments but the action scenes never quite got as exciting as they could, especially compared to other series running at the same time like Kyoukai above. Also the running gag was run into the ground early on.

I couldn't become a hero, so I reluctantly decided to get a job: Another only OK one. I almost dropped this after a few episodes but the middle picked up. The heavy censorship suggests this is a series with Bluy-Ray sales in mind. I believe there's another series with a similar premise which is much higher rated that I'll check out sometime, The Devil is a Part-Timer.

I also watched both episodes of MD Geist.... I would have liked them more if I'd seen them about the time they came out I think.

Halfway through both Tokyo Ravens and Kill la Kill now. Kill la Kill remains as insanely entertaining as when it started, I wasn't sure about Tokyo Ravens at first but I'm now really into it.

<snip>

Shigurui, I say possibly as although I have both on DVD I've not watched them yet, but they do look to be the right sort of thing.

Should add I've just watched a trailer for Shigurui and if that's anything to go by the series is insanely violent.

5 minutes into episode 1 and I've already said "oh my god" out loud at the level of violence. Not one for the faint hearted at all. The statement "this is the effect of a real sword" and following action suggests they are going for weapon accuracy, blood guts and all.
