Non Metallic Metal Colors

Are there any colors that match metallics that ARE NOT metallic? Sometimes when I'm painting a mini I look at bronze or copper or the like and think, "that would be a good color for that cloak" but I don't want a metallic cloak. I just want that particular shade of brown or red or whatever.

Not to mention it'd make NMM painting a whole lot easier. ::D:

Hopefully this question makes sense...

I'm sure there are, and I'm pretty sure it's a matter of training the eye to recognise the color it is actually seeing in each reflection and hotspot, rather than seeing "metal".

Considering that I am partially colorblind, I tend to see "what it's supposed to look like" and not "What it is." I can't help you at the moment because of this perception quirk, and this is probably why I can't figure out NMM yet.

One trick that might help you is get a metallic object that looks kind of like the color you want, then look at it in dim light and try to match the muted reflections with your paints. I tried this one and almost "got it", but then my brain fried.

OK, I use craft paints. I have found the Apple Barrel "King's Gold" Is a great Non-Metallic gold color. A Yellow Ochre color would work well to depending on the variety of gold you are looking for.

As for Copper or Bronze, I take a bit of brown and red and mix them together. Then add a little yello and maybe a bit more red depending on the exactly shade I am looking for.

For silver I use more of a medium grey, and for platinum about the same if not a shade lighter.

One of my all time favorite NMM colors is Vallejo's Flat Aluminum. It's perfect for a bright steel or silver... more silver, I'd say. It's so bright, you'd swear it was metallic. It's great. I use oodles of it in my NMM work and even some normal highlighting. I'm really hoping Reaper comes up with a matching color in their new line of paint. It's so handy for so many applications.

As for other colors...

Enchantra's right about yellow ochre matching gold. That's about as close as you're going to get. Any dark gray, say slate or what have you, will come close to steel. A dark flesh wash on gray will imitate bronze... Hmm... I don't know. What else? Copper's a weird color. Hard to achieve. I guess that's all I've got off-hand. I'd have to stare at my paints to give you some more ideas.
