New England Paint Day

Recommended Posts

I could've gotten the Deva, the Oriental Dragon, and the Alicorn, and tossed on a few more paints, too. But I want to order brushes next week, and that'll run me 60 bucks, so those'll be next months items.

See? I'm fiscally prudent.

BTW, sealer? Amazing. I painted on of my minis tonight (the Marid) and the sealer got rid of all the little bumps and cracks... How many coats should I use for a player's mini? I've put on about 10, diluted by about half and layered thin...

You don't really need very much sealer, just a couple coats. I don't dilute my brush-on sealer at all.

I almost finished something this time, lol. All I need to do is glue the wings on the dragon and pop on a few more tiny highlights.

And I've almost managed to get my eyes uncrossed again.

I've got to say, you guys inspire me. I painted my "Eladrin", Reaper's Marid; a "Warforged", Talbot, Thief; and I'm working on a Tiefling asassin, this elf dude. I also am working on that gnome dude Jack gave me as my "goblin" PC... And my Cavern Crawler's already been primed & the back scales painted; I just need to do the front scales, and then I can start blocking in details and deciding what sort of patterns he's gonna get beyond the drybrushing I've given him. I might wait on him until tomorrow and grab a camera so I can do a WIP...

On a side note, next time we have one of these, can someone bring along a pin vice if it wouldn't be too much trouble? I've been wanting to see how to use one before I pick one up for myself, since I don't really know what to look for in it, and a chance to actually hold & use one usually serves me a lot better than YouTube... My local Lots&More gave me the sqwidgy eye when I asked, so buying one off the shelf might be a hair tricky for me. :( Unless my local "Fine Arts" store stocks them, which I doubt.

On the other hand, we have a Michaels near my school! And every Mon-Fri, a shuttle goes over to it! I didn't know that at all! Hooray!

You should have asked - I was using my pin vise as a handle for the dragon, lol...

Also, pin vises are fairly cheap and come in a variety of styles. Micromark carries a number of pin vises and drill bits... I'm getting my tax return back soon and dropping some serious cash at Micromark, including a couple of new pin vises I want to try out, so I'll have some toys for ya to play with at the next one...

Would something like this one be good? If so... I don't suppose you could toss one onto your order and I'd pay you back for it at the next paint day? Because 9$ shipping on a 11$ item is a bit steep... No worries if it's too much trouble or anything, though! It's just none of the hardware stores around here seem to stock them, and the Lily Pad has one that's like 50 bucks.

You are certainly more responsible than I.

For brush-on sealer, I usually only apply a single layer, often followed by one more layer of spray-on Dullcote®. I do thin the brush-on sealer a little bit, but not very much.

If I use only the spray varnish, I will usually go for 2-3 coats on the finished mini, but I often apply intermediate layers of spray-varnish as I work. (i.e. Apply base coat - spray, Do basic shading - spray, etc.)

Well, I have no problem with the Citadel again but then I'm somewhat biased as that's closest for me.  Although 'm willing to drive anywhere within a couple of hours.

As far as dates go, ReaperCon weekend is out for me as I am finally going (yay!!) and I shouldn't schedule anything for the the weekend of the 6th as I'm not sure what my wife has planned for my birthday.  But don't feel the need to plan things around my schedule; I'll have much painting goodness going on at RCon so I won't feel left out.

I am good with any time, but do any of you guys (other than the Dilv) live near Willimantic and EastCon, or travel through there on the way to (wherever we choose? Because, as a broke, carless college student without a driver's license, I can only come if I can carpool... I don't have a lot of stuff, though, just a lunchbox of paints, so I'm easy to stow if anyone's willing to let me tag along...

There are a couple game stores near Providence, but I don't think they have painting space.  We had mentioned The Whiz Store (http://www.whiznet.com/) as possibly having space and being somewhat centrally located.  That's about 1 hr for Boston people and 1.5 hours for CT people, so I'm not sure if we save much.  I think it comes down to Citadel or Hobby Bunker.

I just walked past Hobby Bunker yesterday on my way to the Department of Education to submit paperwork for my Teaching license.  I'd never been there before.  So at least now I know how easy and accessible it is.  Parking can be a pain though, since it's mostly garages in the area or finding a space on the street.
