Uhm, how is he using all those characters? Did the author jump through a lot of licencing hoops to get the companies to sign off? Is he going to claim fair use?

I expect it's fair use. I'm not going in on this, but I am very sympathetic to why he is telling this story, and in as accessible a form as possible.
