77185: Large Earth Elemental

Haven't posted in a good long while now due to, ehrm.. Mostly laziness, but also christmas and priorities I guess. So hello again folks! :P

Had a productive couple of days this week. Finished off two half-done models on my shelf and did my stone golems + this guy. Also started the two clay golems.

 

I tried keeping it simple. Being such a big model I wanted to get it on the table and off the table asap so he didn't succumb to the ever present "Oh look at this other cool guy I could paint instead"-syndrome. Mission successful as he was done in two days!

As for basing, I tested him on various blanks and figured 80mm was a nice fit. Alas I have no spares to use at the moment. Might be a long time until I get a hold of more so I'll post him up now and post a shot here again if/when he gets based.

 

As a sidenote this has to be one of my favorite Bones models so far. I love the sculpt itself to death and he has real "heft" to him even in Bonesium.

Had some issues with shadows and the white balance, but tried to fix the latter after the fact. Might give it another shot in daylight or after I mod my lightbox a bit.

Awesome textures on the earth/stone! I love the "dirt" look you achieved; my stones usually wind up looking too clean. The crystals are very eye-catching, too.

 

I picked up this figure post-KS, and I think I'm going to have to move him up in my painting queue. It'll be fun to have a showdown between the large earth and fire elementals...

Thanks! Like I said I tried to do him quick so there's both stippling and drybrushing on there with siennas and umbers. Honestly rock for me is completely hit or miss, I just dab stuff on until it looks ok.

Later on I realized some of his stones actually have differing textures and tried to pick them out (rather sloppily I might add) to give him some contrast. The crystals were first planned to be subdued and amethyst-like, but after seeing the rest of him I thought he needed something eye catching so I went with the WoW-style blue stuff :P

I was so caught up in how good the figure looked I didn't even notice he wasn't based yet! Definitely put him up there when you are totally done, really great work.

So... Since I have only one 80mm, one that I'd like to keep around, I broke out the Magic Sculpt and made another one!

Will be set by tomorrow evening I figure, so he might be based sooner than I thought. Thanks again for the encouragement
