Just let me know which entry is her's (via PM is fine) and I'll all let the judges know her age.  Since most are trained artists (either writers or painters), and several have kids around your daughter's age that like to paint as well, they know how to give encouraging feedback to younger people.

That would be awesome, thanks Monkeysloth.

I just had lunch with my wife, and she told the kid was reading a book before going to summer camp this morning, and hadn't finished, so my wife told her to finish it up before dinner, when we are all together again. She said she couldn't, she had to sit down with me to paint "Archer Cute"* tonight. And that she didn't know if she would be able to finish him in time before the end of the month!  ^_^

* I am so excited I am going to tell the whole story in my WIP thread so not to clutter this one (more).

1) CHALLENGE:  Could you post the sources for the pictures?  I'd like a higher resolution version of the one I've chosen for technical purposes.  Barring that can we obtain similar images for technical purposes?

2) CHALLENGE:  Lighting is critical.  More so for this challenge than usual.  Adequet photography is a big factor when doing an online contest and good or bad lighting can make or break a contest piece.  While using just the paint to simulate a particular setting's light I would argue that using actual light to create the same effect would present just as much of a challenge.  I would encourage that you support either method so long as the artist specifies which way they went when they submit their piece.

3) SCANDANAVIAN:  While you are strongly encouraging us to come up with something other than the obvious, will we be penalized for doing the obvious anyway?  Can we use popular abstractions (i.e. Valkryie Profile) as a source of inspiration or are you specifically looking for traditionally/historically acurate or inspired?

1) I don't have the sources and I've tried to find the largest resource I could.  Remember that clicking them will give you the original size as the forum shrinks them.  If they're still too small try a reverse image source via Google.

2) Humm.  I'm not sure about this one.  The challenges are supposed to be difficult but I don't want to make it so difficult that no one wants to participate.  I think that painting your highlights to reflect the light source (for many of these) won't be too difficult especially if you pre-plan.  Lets see what some others thinks--if there are enough that agree that the photography lighting should be accepted I'll allow it.

3) No, you can do the obvious.  I just added the non-obvious stuff for those that didn't want to paint dwarfs and vikings.  As for painting things that are abstractions -- I think you'll be fine on this as long as it's something that the judges can identify.  I only instruct them so far and none are JRPG players. I think as long as the inspiration is apparent it won't be an issue.  But I'm also allowing for a description in the entry (sentence or two) to explain why it fits the theme in case my judges don't read all the wikipeida pages I'll provide.

So everyone.  Please let me know your thoughts on the lighting issue.
