Dark Maiden ... RPC Song Contest Idea ... "Flood"

Recommended Posts

Maybe this will help. Not a video, though.

Here's a couple different approaches, sculpted and water effects. I endorse neither, as I haven't personally tried them:

Thanks guys. dsmiles, I saw that one during my tour of videos.  The Coloured Dust one is very helpful as it's a closer application to what I am looking to do than the others.

I watched a few videos showing the battleboard water including http://www.terranscapes.com.  He's got a couple of nice videos about general use water for his boards and another about creating shoreline waves.

The Prow layout in the Coloured Dust blog is essentially what I had worked out from several videos and websites.

I bought Heavy Gel from Golden at Michael's Saturday to do the water effects.  40% OFF!  It will mix with acrylic paints as well so I can produce the white caps.

That sinking boat they did at Coloured Dust is pretty cool idea for a base.  Maybe a Captain Jack Sparrow type for the tip of the bow.

I was going through my media library for ideas last night for Girot's Song Contest and happened upon "Flood" by Jars of Clay.   MP3: http://markshire.com/playerimages/flood/flood_by_jars_of_clay.mp3

Well, it's been a while but I pulled the Dark Maiden and her subject of interest out and started working on them again.   Specifically, I have added a flotation device and started the water

Tonight's layers:     I started off with another Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish layer At that point I decided on my underwater effect.  I mixed what you see above, Woodl

Posted Images

Okay... I pulled out a test surface and applied a quick paint job to see what shows through the gel.

With the paint quickly applied I decided to see what effect varnishes would have under the gel.

So below is 3 areas of coverage ... left = gloss; right = Reaper sealer; middle = just paint

Then I applied the first rough coat of gel to see what I get.

Now it dries.  I did this around 7:15 Tuesday night.  We'll see how long it'll take.

Keep you posted.

Well ain't life a ...

I finally got to go to a Hobby Lobby.

I picked up some stuff ... naturally ... inluding sanding needles; Milliput to try; a sanding pad; a bottle of Vallejo Model Color Refective Green and a present for my mother's birthday.

We then went to dinner at Taste of Thai in Ithaca to celebrate my fiancée and her twin's birthday today.

And then after we got home my entire right side has gone to sleep.  Pins and needles foot to hand and part of my neck and chin.

No brush control for me tonight.  Heh.

Seeing my doc Monday.

Some of it has subsided and I have taken some garlic pills and my fish oil to better my circulation.

Project progress halted.

We'll see how I am doing tomorrow.

Are you feeling any better?

The feeling of pins & needles has diminished considerably.  I just feel it in my hand, wrist and leg at the moment.  The diagnosis is "likely a pinched nerve since it came on so suddenly" and the remedy is time as well as continuation of my normal but lighter exercises for the rotator cuff tear to minimize the swelling which may be contributing to the problem.

It was also suggested that I increase my daily dose of Garlic and Fish Oil pills.  For those that don't know, Garlic reduces or minimizes plaque buildup in blood vessels.

Getting old sucks.

As far as painting goes ... still a bit hard to hold a brush steady for any length of time much less putting it to figure.

The experiment with Water Effects should resume tonight. I want to get a wave on the test plate by Paint Day on Saturday.

The new green from Vallejo will get tested under the water effect along with some other teals and blue/greens for a better water look.  Gonna paint some stripes or squares depending on home many I have and see which look best.

Luckily none of that requires fine brush control.

Hopefully, nothing gets worse physically this week.

Better off than my drunk neighbor who passed out getting off the toilet, gashed her face open and fractured her orbital ridge.

I knew things weren't going to end well when they were drinking beer while I was shoveling the driveway. At 2pm.

Well, what did you expect when you're snowed in? There's only three things to do in a situation like that: Drink, Shovel, or...

frankly, I am glad to hear it is only a pinched nerve. tingling and numbness after going out for thai food made me think major allergic reaction, and well, that could really suck

Indeed. Though pinched nerves suck enough on their own, they're seldom (if ever) permanent. Physical therapy will make it work it's way out of wherever it's getting impinged at.

I needed Ezren's arm w/staff to modify another miniature that my friend did not like the candelabra  it was holding.
I painted this Ezren to look like the other one he has off mine and green stuffed it tentacles with any leftover greenstuff I had over time. Hopefully he can find a gaming use for this doppelganger.

This is an Aasimar Summoner and his Eidolon that I painted up for my new Pathfinder campaign.  I'm pretty sure the foo dog is supposed to be a statue, but eidolons are typically otherworldly creatures, so the blue skin and gold mane makes him look bizarre enough.  I'm really happy with the color scheme and how they compliment each other.  It might be a little hard to tell from the pics, but his hair has a gold colored hue and the eyes are glowing purple to match the eidolon.  I tried to create a glowing effect coming from the staff, as well as his outstretched hands.  I also attempted some minor photo editing to brighten the pictures up, as the lighting in my house is pretty weak.  Overall, I'm pretty proud of this pair, but I will probably touch up a few things here and there.  Any tips on glowing or magic effects that I could add to the summoner or eidolon would be appreciated.  Thanks for any comments or critiques!

While I've been relatively inactive, my lovely wife has not.  She's been working on a selection of figures some of which in my admittedly biased opinion are much better than anything I've ever done >.>

      77265 - Drys, Dryad
I love this figure and the paint job is so subtle.  The shading on the greens is superb - unfortunately, I'll have to work out how to link the front again : ) EDIT - front of dryad:  https://goo.gl/photos/1FRcQ5ZqZoqGt3dCA

      77313 - Krug, Hill Giant
Yet again, some gorgeous shading on this figure.

      77314 - Golan, Hill Giant
This figure is very... uh, purple.  But I think it works well.  I might have to go over it and tidy up some of the tree branch club - the paint coverage isn't as good as it could be.  But still a lovely bit of work.

      89013 - Ezren, Iconic Wizard
She has this annoying tendancy to rattle off freehand that's better than my "paint by numbers" detail work, elf her eyes!  This one was a fairly fast paint, with not as much shading as she's done elsewhere.

      89014 - Seltyiel, Iconic Magus
She refers to this one as her "Michael Jackson" figure, for obvious reasons : )

His hands moved swiftly over the old parchment, smoothed by the many hands before him. The Gnome was most helpful, almost a bit too helpful, always with this gentle smile on his face, his eyes hidden behind thick glasses.
He took another sip from the dark brown ale and carefully spooned some stew in his mouth, not to soil the map nor his beard. The strong flavour of venison was a good indicator that the cook used fresh local meat, not ground up spoiled beef as was the case in the last establishment he dared to set a foot in. Tymora be blessed he knew the one or other herb that would cure an upset stomach.

He looked again at the hand drawn ruins, his lips forming a silent word: “Everanthaâ€. The “Watchful Fortress†in the common tongue. Only old stories told around the fireplace spoke of the evil that befell the Elven kingdom, yet little was known about its demise, less even about the time when it stretched from East to West, North to South.
When he first arrived in Greifshold he craved old sealed away books and dry parchment that would tell of these people, their songs, their poetry, how they lived, what trials they had to face in this harsh land. But all he got was the shake of a head, a gentle smile or a sigh: the foreigner that expected everything to be revealed to him without effort.
Humans arrived late in these lands and were of a simple mindset. They were more concerned how to survive the next winter, not with old stories and haunted places. Still, as the Gnome told him, every few years adventuring groups that heard of riches untold would make their way to one of these frozen ruins. Few returned, some barely alive, frost-burned or crazed, some with artifacts, rusty and broken, but still of an elegant beauty, entirely absent from the local handicraft.
What did he care for gold. Knowledge and knowledge alone he desired. Artefacts, yes, telling him of these people, how they celebrated, how they fought, but maybe more than this, sealed away down below a library would await him, the first to roam its shelves after thousands of years.
At the first light of day he would depart. His fingers stopped at Walhafrid’s Stede, the little drawn chimney smoking invitingly. His first stop. And then only a good days travel further west. He sat back and finished his meal with a fine pipe. Maybe the last bit of comfort he would have for the next weeks.

Snow began to fall, its icy embrace mirroring the cold hands reaching out for him. Not weather, not undeath would stop him. The flame always prevails, it always consumes.

He delved into the darkness, only to meet more mindless marionettes, their purpose long faded and replaced with everlasting hatred. What would the flame reveal?

I love the sculpt for this guy. So much fun stuff to work with. But in the end I got fed up with him and wanted him done - he's intended for tabletop use, and I decided that all the fiddly pouches & stuff hanging off his belts weren't going to get the time and attention they deserved, so they kinda got a brown splatted on there and I called it done. To be honest, I'll probably come back and touch this guy up later when I'm feeling ambitious, but for now... this works.

I think I actually had the lighting turned up a little too much for the photo... He's got fairly noticeable highlighting in real life, but it mostly washed out on here. Oh well, at least you can see his fire hair, and the silly lava base I made for him. This is my Frostgrave apprentice, an elementalist focusing primarily on fire (shockingly!). The actual wizard is still a WIP; she'll be along probably towards the end of February, at the rate I've been going on her. In the meantime, I have this guy looking menacing on the battlefield.
