Colonel Kane's LL Den of the Morlock Shaman

The village of Aldriss is usually a fairly quiet place, however the last three weeks has been fairly eventful. First three weeks ago a traveling carnival came to town. They got set up just outside of town and put on a show for the locals. Later that night when the town and carnival were asleep, someone raided the surrounding farms The raiders took the farmers only cow and the few pigs that he had and they burned the barn. The next night another raid took place, this time two farms were raided. All of the livestock from both farms were taken and the buildings were burned, luckily both families had been in town visiting the carnival and had stayed the night with family in town. The village council decide that the carnival had to be responsible, so they order the carnival to leave. The carnival pulled up stacks and ran. It was night time when the carnival pulled out of town. Unfortunately the carnival wasn't responsible. They were attacked that night and the survivors made their way back to Aldriss. The town realized their mistake and took in the survivors. The village council sent a rider to inform Larm, the nearest big town, and seek help. A patrol from Larm arrived two days later. There hadn't been a raid since the attack on the carnival. The patrol searched for the raiders and could not find any trace of them. The patrols leader deemed that the riders had moved on, so he order the patrol back to Larm. It has been quiet for the last two weeks. Things were just starting to get back to normal, when last night a raid took place. This time the farmer and his wife were killed and two of their teenage children, the 16 year old daughter Elle and the 14 year old son Edvard, were taken. The farmer's youngest Billy (8) made it to town with the tell. Billy tells the village council that they 'didnit look like people'. The village council is trying to find a solution. A two of the villagers have decided to go and find the missing teenagers. Harris (age 70) and Marcus (age 21). The call goes out for anyone in the meeting who wants to go and help. Bruno, a local tough, who has a crush on Elle, has volunteered. “Is there any among you who will take up the challenge?â€

Ralph, a farmer, stands up. "I may not look it, but I can pull my weight when I need to. And them be my friends who have been attacked."

*out of character, not the people per say. He's a farmer so he thinks all farmers are friends*

Slowly Corran stood to his feet and cast his eyes around at those who had already volunteered, after a moment he nodded as if to himself before speaking, just barely loud enough to be heard by all. "I too shall go with. If those who are responsible for this are not, as young william indicated, people then it might become needful to try and discover exactly what they are. Perhaps something we might find will match up with some of the things I have read of and prevent us from stumbling in blindly"

"Aye! You can count on me eyes & my hammer!" says a grey haired dwarf.

Bruunwald or Bruun' to people that know him well. A jeweler by trade, the old dwarf remembers the night the horde of goblins raided his small town. The humanoids slaughtered anything that moved that night. Bruun & few dwarves were able to escape that night at the cost of others, including Bruun's father. Also killed that night were his wife & only son.

Corran's eyes fell on the others who volunteered, a thin smile coming to the young scribes lips. He did not exactly know them well, but in a small community such as this he knew of them. The herbalist was a most welcome addition, any who knew what could be used as medicine in case the inevitable nicks and scratches where not the only hurts this group recieved. The others also seemed like solid folk, good to have around and probably far more prepared to deal with whatever hardships they encountered than he himself. It was too late for him to back out now. He would just have to prepare himself mentally for the worst. Hopefully they would find his mind of use, as frankly, when it came to matters of the body, he knew he fell short. Where they laboured, or hunted the woods, he spent his days writing letters, copying books, or pouring over dusty and dry old tomes of history and religion. At least they were not likely to be away long, or far from home.

After the meeting you are taken aside by your teachers and told to meet them at The Golden Drake Inn.

30 minutes later at the meeting Sulex the wise has several items laid out on a table. There are several shields daggers and various other weapons. There is also holy symbols for everyone as well as 8 rods of about 6 inches long. There are several packs with rations in them.

Everyone receives (if you chose) a shield, dagger and one weapon of your choice. Also everyone is given a holy symbol from the Temple of Law. You all are given a 'wand of Sulex' [please refer to it this way if and when you use it.] Sulex tells you it will work once per day and give you light, but he isn't certain how long it will last.

{Now here is the tricky part. NO ONE WILL BE PENALIZED FOR CHOOSING A WEAPON. You all are 0 level and haven't started on your path to your class. A staff is considered a weapon for this choice.

A note to the 'clerics' of the group. The symbol of the church is a sword with a wide cross-guard thrust into the ground. So there is No restrictions on weapons for clerics...}

Marcus the ranger arrives and suggests that the party gets going. (assuming the party goes along).

Marcus heads the party toward the farm that was attacked the night before. It doesn't take long for him to figure out which way the raiders are headed after doing their handy work. He heads the party toward the northwest. He is intent on following the trail, however he keeps an eye on the horizon. About two hours later the terrain has became more and more hilly. Finally Marcus points to a largish hill that has been sheered in half in the distant past.

“There. They must be in the caves there. That has to be where they are. It is only about 30 mintues away, however we should go slow to avoid drawing attension to ourselves. You will do as I tell you, or we are all dead. Do you agree?â€

It did not take Corran long to decide, he picked one of the daggers  and tucked it into his belt, and selected a stout birchwood stave that would serve him as much as a walking stick as a weapon he eyed a sword as well for a moment before changing his mind. A weapon he did not know the basics of how to use, he decided, would likely be as much a danger to him and his companions as any foe they faced. A shield though, that he would take. So equipped he stepped aside to let the others make their choices, while he contemplated what might lay ahead.

Hugo awkwardly followed the group as they wound through the streets, always a step behind. he was unsure of himself, but the excitement of what was to come was palpable - a real adventure! if his pop pop could see him now he'd be proud, he just knew it.

***

when given the opportunity to select  gear Hugo methodically takes one of each and reorganizes the contents of the pack with a practiced hand. he tucks the  wand of Sulex in to a handy pocket, slings the shield over his shoulder and tests the edge of the blade. when presented with the weapons he selects a long sword without hesitation. a hero's weapon, that's what he'd seen on the soldiers as a boy, and all the best monster slayers from the stories used them.

***

As the terrain becomes rough Hugo keeps up a steady pace and was mindful others who were not as well prepared for a vigorous hike. he offers to carry the bag of any who falter on the the trail. he was ready. he had never been more ready for anything in his life! a glance over his shoulder to the village in the valley below was all the coaxing he needed. those caves didn't look so bad.....

Edmund looked over all the weapons and items laid on the tables before him, he had to admit it was quite impressive.  He passed up all the large weapons such as the long and bastard swords and went straight to the short swords.  While the other weapons were impressive they seemed too large and unwieldy as he was use to the cramped spaces of the mines where he learned to look for the stones he cuts.  He was use to swinging a pickaxe and how much different could this be he thought to himself.  He also takes a dagger that he puts in his belt and one of the wands and some rations.

...

As they leave the city and start to come into the hills Edmund's nerves hits him and he begins to wonder what he has gotten himself into.  When Marcus mentions whatever our quarry is it lies in the caves his tensions ease, "At least it's not a forest" he thought, something about a dense forest made him uneasy he wasn't sure if it was the way the treetops affected the light, or maybe how eerily quiet it could get.
