First up for now, the not-Remorhaz.

Tidying this guy up took hours and hours. I think I spent 2-3 hours just trying to remove mold lines, then washing and straightening and filling gaps. Painting was all done today, but I'm kind of stuck.

Is something missing? c&c please before I start basing etc!

I kinda feel he's a bit boring, at the same time I don't want to introduce too much color. I tried using a few purples but I ended up liking the blue/white thing better.

As I'm not doing the scales all firey, like angry Remorhaz' are supposed to have, I'm quite pleased with the eyes to try to introduce the fire-theme of the monster.

You can probably tell he's pretty much a copy of the one by Shannon in the store images, but hey, I really liked that one :)

He looks good, but a few suggestions:

1) highlights on those black claws

2) I think the mouth teeth need to be a different color. A deep dark blue perhaps? They blend in too much with the rest of the fig.

1) Highlighting black, ack! I guess I'll give it a try. Never had much luck with that thus far :|

Ideas on what colors I should mix in, I figure doing them black/blue would be a bit boring? Yellow? Maybe I can use purple there? I have no clue :P

2) Yep, those I'm planning to do somehow, just very hard to reach as I already assembled him completely. I'll try dark blue if I keep the mouth as light as it is, although if I do the mouth darker I guess they'll be blue-white like the top spikes.

I was planning to maybe make the mouth opening all firey too, like the eyes, but painting that in such a hard to reach area would be torture.

Thanks :)

Also I thought of doing something to his "beard" but I'm not sure what, or if I even should.

I really like what you've done here so far. The blues give the piece a certain ambiance.

For highlighting black, I use purple. To begin, make a mix of 2:1 black mixed with purple. Then layer up to a 1:1 ratio and then layer up to pure purple If it doesn't "pop" enough you can add white to lighten the purple until you get exactly what you want.

Oooh I love those eyes!  I wonder if you could get a hint of yellow in the tips of the spines for a bit of color?  Anne's got highlighting black down perfectly!  Great colors- that blue is lovely.  Maybe some purple shadows under the belly scales where the neck curves at the top?

Hm, I tried doing a little yellow on them now, don't know if I like it or not though :P

Purple shadows I did try before posting, didn't really feel it though, so went with pure blues.

Also tried and failed miserably at highlighting the black claws twice now, both with purple and grey, just ends up looking dirty.

Will see if I can find a decent tutorial on it and give it one more shot later.

So yeah, not happening.. The worm has now moved to my shelf of shame until I get a base for him, and/or until I can be bothered to try the highlighting again.

Instead I started blocking in this guy who's been based red for a few months.

Tried some slightly different colors, but I still kinda want to keep with the Pathfinder cover art. So far he's definitely not the mini that translated the best into Bonesium. He's pretty soft on the detail compared to most I've painted so far and the mold lines were (and some probably still are) in some bad spots.

Definitely not my favorite Bones this one, I think I'll just tackle him quick and dirty to get him off the bench or I fear he'll be stuck in limbo :P

Next up is probably the forest elemental, the hydra or alternatively trying to finish off my colossal skeleton.

Feel free to request one or the other if you want to as it's pretty much the same to me.

I like it. You could carry the yellow to he teeth/mandible...thin it more and put it in several very thin ayers and you can contril the buid up easier (in theory at least lol ;-)).

Anne is on track for the black highlighting. What was recommended to me and is awesome is using Privateer Press' Coal Black for highlighting. It is black with a more bluish purple or turquoise based on the way Mike McVey highlights black.

@KruleBear

I think I'll leave the decision on whether or not I should use the yellow to the wife. As for highlighting, yeahr... I just kind of gave up.

Someone have a decent tutorial that includes black highlights on something kinda like these claws? I.e swords or bladed weapons of some kind?

A little under an hour of painting later and I've decided the pf red is more or less done. Will probably do something more to the wing membranes at some point, was just trying stuff out right now. Will also maybe highlight the horns a bit, maybe clean a few bits up. But done for now.

Also, is it just my Bones pf red, or is the right eye more or less missing? I mean, I can't even find the slightest trace of it. Left eye is pretty obvious.

Here's the colossal skeleton at this point. Haven't touched him in ages, but he was sort of base coated last time I had him out.

Guess he's next :P

Since I haven’t had a WIP in a very long time, I thought this mini would be perfect for it. I plan to paint her up for a Christmas gift for a friend and figured to keep me on track I’d do a WIP.

I have a few minis in progress she’ll be my main priority after my Darksword Stephanie Law Bard. I prepped her and primed yesterday after the humidity finally dropped.

My current projects in various stages on my desk.

And just the pinup after some prep work

A few places I could have spent more time on but figured I’ll prime and see what stands out.

I used army painter matte black primer followed by Tamiya fine white primer. For the bits on her base I left them in black since she will be the focal point no need to use white on them, it’ll help the colors be a bit more muted.

And finally my quick mock up for color checking. I usually just print a stock photo and use my paints over it to plan the general scheme.

Now to finish up my bard then onto tackling her flesh. Since she’ll have a hint of sheer with her stocking I needed to be sure the color for her skin and the sheer works and won’t lose the effect due to the color choices.

Feel free to post C&C throughout, or ask questions. I’m always happy to share what I can. I’ll do my best to share the steps I take and colors used.

      Happy painting everyone.

I’m starting my first of the kid heroes from the Bones 5 core set.  I really like the character design with the sharp looking long coat, cool hair and bone sword.

I want to do something different with the skin on this one.  I want to paint them as a moon elf, with cool undertones and warmer highlights.

im going to try basecoating with a blue and highlight up to pinkish highlight.  Not sure if this is going to work.

Starting with a basecoat of ritterlich:dark elf at about 1:1.

This is along the lines of what I’m going for with the skin.  Putting this here for reference.

The merfolk in Dark Depths sculpted by Bobby Jackson were one of the things I was most looking forward to in Bones 5.

I chose the Mermaid Ranger for my RCL Q3 Large Group “Under the Sea”, and started work on her after ReaperCon.

I've been trying to make bolder color choices, and thought this was a great mini to push myself in that direction.

I’ve posted some WIPs on discord, but wanted to record the process here in a bit more detail.

First I primed both rangers with Badger neutral primer, and then basecoated the tails and hair with 0963 Coal Black

Then I tried to airbrush the tails with 09330 Wild Violet while leaving some dark shadows.

Been working on these guys as a test for the squad color scheme. Trying some layering on the white, it's working out well so far.
They're 1:48 scale, same as Star Wars Legion, and I've rebased them onto the same 27mm bases that Legion uses. Mostly because the standard D1947 bases are like 35mm. Way huge.

Hi there all, I've decided to dive into the deep end with finally trying the scary world of OSL. 😄

Feel I've lost the plot on this ... so any advice on how to proceed with this would be greatly appreciated! (Having fun, though, despite not knowing what the hell I'm doing. 😁)

I'm including a "top down" view, which is where I'm most confuddled. That dark line down his arm which represents the shadow from the staff which sits between the source of light ... it just doesn't look right to me.  🤔

So, I'm all ears for suggestions on improvements!
