Steve Jackson Games, how could you?

Steve Jackson Games has managed something I never thought I'd see, an expansion pack for Munchkin I have no interest in buying.

Munchkin: Penny Arcade is a pack of 15 cards from the online comic notorious for blowing off sexual assault victims' protest of sexual assault jokes in its strip.

Nope. Just ain't.

I have had a request to move this to beekeepers, because of the sensitive and volatile subject, which is a trigger topic for victims of sexual assault.

At this time, I am not moving it, but I will watch closely, and if this becomes either:

  • a sexual assault discussion thread
  • a rehash of the 'dickwolves' strip pro/com debate
  • a political thread in any way
  • abusive in other ways (as determined to be so at the sole discretion of the moderation team*)

then this thread will be moved.  I *am* going to remove the highly charged words and replace them with ... less volatile words which are less likely to trigger victims PTSD responses.

Until then, discussion of Munchkin or SJG is perfectly reasonable.

*this is not a matter for debate.  If any ONE moderator decides to close, delete, move, lock, or dissolve this thread, it will be done. this is not a democracy, it is a privately owned board and our rules and rulings stand.

I'm finding the current Munchkin strategy of making expansion packs of whatever random thing is popular at the moment to be very frustrating.  I know some people love the whole 'blender' idea of mashing different genres together, but I'm more of a one-genre-at-a-time gal.  So cool sets, like Munchkin Fu are out of print (can't buy the expansion) or just not getting new expansions.  Meanwhile there's several flavors of kitchen sink I can throw in there.  Plus Munchkin Pathfinder, which sounds cool except that the original Munchkin was loosely based on D&D so it's sort of just a re-hash with today's cool buzz-word label on it.

Feels like the last gasp of floundering creativity.  Sometimes it's better to just say you're done before you embarrass yourself.

At the most, I find 10% of Penny Arcade strips funny. Currently, that's just barely enough to keep me reading through the tedious or offensive other 90%. But nearly every time I open the strip, I question whether it's worth my time.

Curiously, I find Munchkin to have about the same fun ratio on first pass. But since it's designed for replay, I'm less willing to tolerate the irritation than I am in a throwaway comic strip. I had my fill of Munchkin about halfway through my first play of the game.

Neither of those opinions is sufficient for me to desire to edit, censor, or stop publication of strip or game.

Never read Penny Arcade.  Now I don't feel like I'm missing anything I guess that's a win!

Classic munchkin (before the pile-ons) was a hoot.  C'thuhulu Munchkin was a friggin riot.  Munchkin, however, is not for everybody and there is nothing wrong with that.

I'm disappointed by that too.. I combine Munchkin Fu with Munchkin Impossible (also out of print) and wish we'd get new cards for it..

For what it's worth, the Munchkin Penny Arcade booster is a November 2012 release, which does pre-date the <whatever> around the last PAX.

Disclaimer: I am a (volunteer) moderator for the SJGames Ogre forum, but otherwise unconnected to SJG. Also not a Munchkin player, but I appreciate the Munchkin completionists giving SJG money to do crazy things (like Ogre).

Pshh!  There are a couple out of print games I miss.  Despite the horrible art I used to love Overpower.  AVP had a short lived card game that was fun but REALLY hard to find.
