Steve Jackson Games, how could you?

Munchkin Pathfinder is actually pretty cool, if you are at all interested in the Pathfinder world. I agree though, Penny Arcade is sometimes really funny, but sometimes it is horribly horribly offensive for no good reason. I have no desire to play it. Or have my Munchkin games become'Munchkin against Humanity' or somesuch.

Thinking about it, I guess our sessions of Munchkin tend to be fun because we have a house style of play that emphasizes the goofiness and deemphasizes the cutthroat aspects.

It's not like Talisman, where we actually removed cards from the game because they were Fun Destroyers, but we do tend to not pile on when someone draws unfortunate cards, and we try to win with some style rather than by defeating a Level 1 Potted Plant.

We have, I believe, all of the boxed variations of Munchkin and supplements and most of the little card expansions. We like the mash-ups, but we don't like shuffling two games worth of cards and sorting them back out afterwards. It's usually only worth when we have more than four players.

I'm sorry to learn that Munchkin Fu is out-of-print. It's a fun one, and I think the only one *not* illustrated by John Kovalic, but by Greg Hyland instead..

That's probably my big problem with Munchkin: it's a game*, and I play games to win**. Munchkin played to win is ... not fun for me or for most of the people I usually game with.

* RPGs are on the borderline between toy and game, which makes them a special case. But even there, survival and accomplishing goals are close enough to "winning" that they scratch the itch.

** The only exception I can think of is Paranoia, when run the way it usually is, not by the rules. When the goal is to make sure each of the characters is dead at least six times in under two hours, even I can't take it seriously.  ^_^

I got out of playing Munchkin years ago. It ceased to be fun when they started releasing stuff just to release stuff. It was essentially the same thing, different genre. What, a level 20 monster? Oh yeah, every genre has one. Yawn. Their game Illuminati was fun to play once, but I tried it a second time and it wasn't near as fun. I sold it along with all of the rest of my Munchkin stuff. I prefer to play wargames and if I want to play an rpg, then I will play an rpg. But I am kind of picky that way.  ::):

I've never been a CCG fan (which is why I've held off on buying the Pathfinder one even though it looks really fun) so Munchkin never appealed to me.  I did see a Conan expansion for it that had me on the cusp of buying it (HUGE R.E. Howard fan), but never did.  I've read a few Penny Arcade comics, but never really got into them.  They seemed to subscribe to all of the typical nerd stereotypes without bringing anything new  or funny to the genre.

Munchkin isn't a CCG; it's just a game with a couple of huge decks of cards. There are little novelty booster packs, but they are non-randomized. Everyone gets the same cards when they buy the game.

Thanks for the clarification.  I guess seeing the smaller booster packs threw me off.  Still, the whole using cards to play doesn't seem to appeal to me which, again, is why I'm so hesitant to spend the cash on the Pathfinder card game.  I'm sure eventually I'll do it, but I'm currently building a world for my D&D adventures that I've been playing/cultivating and have my Tunnels and Trolls stuff I've been neglecting as well.  I wish having a job didn't get in my way so much so I'd have more time to game!

The Pathfinder Adventure Card game is not a CCG. You don't have to buy blind boosters or anything. I own it and all the expansions. It allows for solo play and is pretty fun. Worth a look and I'm not a card game fan.

For what it's worth, the Munchkin Penny Arcade booster is a November 2012 release, which does pre-date the <whatever> around the last PAX.

Disclaimer: I am a (volunteer) moderator for the SJGames Ogre forum, but otherwise unconnected to SJG. Also not a Munchkin player, but I appreciate the Munchkin completionists giving SJG money to do crazy things (like Ogre).

To be clear - the incident in question in Pingo's original post happened in August of 2010.

Full details on the controversy can be found by googling "penny arcade controversy", for those that wish to know more.
