GoH Phoenicia / Muroni

Any of you that have played through the original set of Eberron modules for D&D 3.5 may recall Muroni, the draconic prophetess that meets the party in Xen'drik. My current campaign began with those modules (the first three, anyway...I understand there were more, but I never saw them and was frankly tired of running the modules by the time we got through the third one), and the original Muroni was played by the D&D PPM Evermeet Wizard, a fun mini with golden skin, pink robes and big hair.

 

When I knew I was going to bring Muroni back later in the campaign, I realized that I had another mini that would fit a simlar description, given the right colors: Guild of Harmony's Phoenicia. It's a mini I've been looking forward to painting for a long time, and the color scheme I had in mind promised to be pretty fun.

 

On this mini, I fought against a crappy primer coat the whole way; it was the end of a spraycan, and it was just a little too cold, or too humid, or too dry, or something, and I ended up with a little bit too much tooth from the primer. And of course I decided to soldier on, rather than strip the primer and brush prime. Foolish me.

 

Despite the primer problem, she looks good at arm's length, and I'm very happy with many of the things I set out to do: A strong directional lighting scheme (so lots of shadow on her left side, lots of light on her right), some bright colors that I don't usually deal with, and a bit of transparency on her stockings. She's also the first model I've really spent a lot of time looking at a color wheel for everything.

Heh. If you ran the second module, that's likely why you never played the third. The third is actually my favorite of the bunch, but the second module ("Whispers of the Vampire's Blade") is one of the single most awful adventures ever published.

I really love the Phoenicia model and you painted the pink beautifully. I also like what you did with the base. I see you attempted to paint translucent fabric. :)

Stern, if we get much closer than this, her face especially starts to show the graininess of the primer coat. This is one of the few instances where a camera has done a mini some favors. Still, I may snap a few more shots if I have a chance.

 

Kuro, Maglok, the pink recipe was one of the major victories on this piece. I was really happy with how it came out. Here's the recipe if anyone wants it (paints are all RMS):

 

• BASECOAT: 2:1:3::Clear Magenta : Amethyst Purple : Ghost White
• SHADOWS A: 1:2:1 :: Clear Magenta : Amethyst Purple : Violet Liner
• SHADOWS B: as shadows A + 1 Green Liner
• Deepest shadows: keep dropping toward pure Green Liner.
• HIGHLIGHT A: 2:3 :: Clear Magenta : Ghost White
• Highest Highlights: keep moving toward pure Ghost White

The Clear Magenta is really potent, so figuring out how much Ghost White had to go in was pretty crazy. After the 2:3 ratio on the highlight, my next step added another 3 drops of Ghost White before noticing an appreciable difference. Pretty crazy.
