Suden
I am on the EN World mailing list and I got the following link. Apparently the exact date is a little dodgy, but anyway, happy anniversary to the game responsible for most of my hobby time and money. http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?352184-It-s-D-amp-D-s-40th-anniversary-Tell-me-your-D-amp-D-history-and-what-it-means-to-you!
Moderator Darsc Zacal Posted January 26, 2014 Moderator Share Posted January 26, 2014 Regardless of the exact date, it's been a fun ride!
Crimson_king_of_the_tower
Man 40 years huh? I agree with Darsc Zacal it has been a fun ride and I can say with confidence I would not have had the magical and inventive childhood that I did nor would I be the person I am now without it. Thank you Gary for introducing the world to such a great past time (more of a way of life for some of us) wish you were still at the table with us!
TGP
Thinking back on it, I apparently missed the first 9 [?] years.
dwarvenranger
Thinking back on it, I apparently missed the first 9 [?] years. Me too. But I have sooo many awesome memories from the other 31 years that it's ok. Happy anniversary Dungeons and Dragons.
MiniCannuck
I owe a lot of great times and friends to this game. Without this game, I wouldn't have found my love of miniature painting or being going to Texas for my third ReaperCon. It's a regular "it's a Wonderful life" for geeks.

Egg of Coot
I just did the math, and I've been a D&D afficionado for the past 31 years. I wonder how many hours of actual game time I've logged? I'm pretty sure I've turned the odometer over at least once . . . The Egg
ttuckerman
I've only started about 38 years ago, but I game with two that started over 40 years ago with 'Chainmail' the predecessor to D&D.
CashWiley
I'm 35 years into it, though I haven't played since 96 or so. The game absolutely changed my life, as a year after I started playing (invited to a game after I bought a Tom Meier elf at the hobby shop because it looked cool, always been about the minis!) my family moved and I fell in with a small AD&D crowd at the new school. Sadly, they are both passed on now, but one of them became my very best friend and a few years later we started our band which allowed me to travel and experience life in a whole new way. So, yay D&D!
LittleBluberry
So I guess I'm actually older than D&D (by about 1 year) but not surprisingly I didn't start to play until much later. Still, have enjoyed ~23 years of D&D and we celebrated by playing most of yesterday. Fun times!
Moderator Darsc Zacal Posted January 26, 2014 Moderator Share Posted January 26, 2014 I don't know why, but it always surprises me to find that there are so many of us who loved playing D&D back in the day, but haven't done so for a very long time. (Even though we still might have our old books and still collect minis) I'm guessing most are like me, that once your long standing group breaks up you're probably at an age where it's hard to find similarly minded people who'd fit your particular mold of folks you'd want to game with?
CashWiley
Darsc, quite accurate. I try to be open-minded, but the local rpg group that meets at the library just weirds me out too much. One girl has some pretty serious issues and it's complicated because I work with her mom. Then one of the guys is an unfortunate stereotype misogynist dork. The guy who runs the game is at a good intersection of functional and nerdy, but the rest...
Heisler
I bought my first copy at Three Wishes Toy store in Boulder Colorado in the summer of 1976 and started our first campaign during the fall semester that year so that was 8th grade. The game club at the University of Colorado had a core of players that had played with Gygax and brought the game with them when they went off to college. I looked for the game when the Boulder Daily Camera (the local paper) printed an article about the group.
