ttuckerman
I'm still playing with some of the group that I started with. We don't play D&D now, but we still do RPG. Right now we are playing Shadowrun, Eathdawn and Spycraft. Spycraft comes closest because it is a D20 variant.
Moderator Chaoswolf Posted January 26, 2014 Moderator Share Posted January 26, 2014 I don't know why, but it always surprises me to find that there are so many of us who loved playing D&D back in the day, but haven't done so for a very long time. (Even though we still might have our old books and still collect minis) I'm guessing most are like me, that once your long standing group breaks up you're probably at an age where it's hard to find similarly minded people who'd fit your particular mold of folks you'd want to game with? Yup, same here. Although, I make it even harder for myself by refusing to get invovled in any of this new-fangled feats and attack of oppurtunity nonsense. I learned THAC0, everyone should have to, darnit! I'm also 1 year older than D&D; I think I started playing when I was around 10, so I've been involved in one way or another for 31 years. I've had some pretty good times during those years.
haldir
Started playing when I was around 9 so I've been involved with the game for 31 years or so. Minis came along at age 11. I've enjoyed the ride even with the last 14 years mostly as play by post or gaming ReaperCon.
Moderator Darsc Zacal Posted January 27, 2014 Moderator Share Posted January 27, 2014 It's funny that so many people who've posted here have stated that they started 31 years ago. What the heck happened 31 years ago that got folks into the game? (I've been in for 35/36 years)

That pretty much happened to me when I moved to another city. I didn't play for several years until I moved back to an area where members of my old group played. It's funny that so many people who've posted here have stated that they started 31 years ago. What the heck happened 31 years ago that got folks into the game? (I've been in for 35/36 years) I can't speak for everyone, but 31 years ago these ads appeared and I was hooked: That's a proper fighter, far more concerned with his sword than his dying comrade.
Moderator Darsc Zacal Posted January 27, 2014 Moderator Share Posted January 27, 2014 I had never seen or even heard about that ad before. Thanks very much for sharing it. Where were those ads placed? It looks like comic book printing. Poor Indel. I think every group had one of him in the party.
Pingo
It's funny that so many people who've posted here have stated that they started 31 years ago. What the heck happened 31 years ago that got folks into the game? (I've been in for 35/36 years) Wasn't 31 years ago when D&D made it into the chain bookstores? EDIT: Count me in the group that played D&D long ago (starting 34 years ago in my case) and then didn't. If it weren't for the kids needing a nice, simple ruleset to get going on, we still wouldn't have been playing it. In our case it's not that our gaming group went away. We've been fortunate to have a wonderful group of gaming friends for decades. It's that we left it behind to play Champions, Runequest, Bushido, Shadowrun, Ars Magica, and I don't know how many unique and weird homebrews. I have fond memories of D&D, and we've had some fun recent campaigns, but it isn't necessarily the best system out there. dwarvenranger
I remember finding the Basic set at Waldenbooks. That's what got me into the game.
Suden
There was a whole story line of ads in comics. I remember after seeing a couple trying to find them all to read the mini story. I think I had maybe five of them. Here is a compilation, but it seems like it is missing a chapter. http://www.pinterest.com/markcronan/dungeons-and-dragons-ads-in-comic-books/
CrimsonStar
Incidentally, today's my Dad's birthday as well, although he's definitely not a D&D player, but I get my excellent math skills and imagination from him, so thanks, Dad. I started out about 30 years ago "borrowing" my cousin's Red Box set. I still have it. Although I've wandered to different editions or RPGs over the years, I always come back to that good old Red Box. I'm currently reading Playing at the World and although it's kind of dry, it's informative and interesting enough to keep me slowly reading through it. It's a great history of D&D and RPG/wargames in general. Plus there's a lot about R.E. Howard and the pulp writers from the early 1900's, too.
Moderator Darsc Zacal Posted January 27, 2014 Moderator Share Posted January 27, 2014 We played and dabbled in other game systems too: RuneQuest, Traveller, Tunnels and Trolls, Paranoia and others. However our favourite was always AD&D. It's the one we enjoyed the most and kept us together for so long.
CashWiley
We were pretty big into Star Frontiers and Gamma World, too. One kid loved James Bond so we played a lot of that. I still have most of those old books around somewhere, I just saw the Star Frontiers book in a stack when I was at my mom's last.
KruleBear
Dang, i did not realise i was older than D&D. I think i started playing in 81 with a lotof Boothill thrown in and drifted to Warhammer Roleplaying 10 years later for a couple years. Only miniature battles and board games since. . Pingo
"Older than D&D." A new appelation for venerable age and possible grognard status.
alchemist
I find it amusing that the front page of these boards truncates the thread title to "Happy 40th Anniversary Dung".
