Whob
Hey, I'm new to the reaper line, though I've played some GW games. I'm wondering if Reaper Warlord offers anything different then other minature games out there. Also, I have many questions about the world, armries, fluff etc. Bare with me What armies are there and what are they like? You don't have to type it all out and put it on here, a link would be apperciative because I'm having trouble finding the information I need on it. Are the minatures going to have in depth backgrounds or will you leave it to the individual to make that up? Exp. A orginial theme based army? Err I have a lot of questions about the Warlord world. But I guess I'll just start off with the basic stuff. Any help would be appreciated for someone who dosen't know where to start with warlord. (and yes I know the rule book isnt out yet as far as I know, just the beta) Thanks.
Steven Page
Welcome to the board. We are glad you are interested in Warlord. First off, I'm a volunteer playtester for Warlord. Some of my conclusions are subject to being Overuled. Be that as it may.... Warlord is a fast-to-learn, fast-to-play game of skirmish fantasy combat. You can have a decent game with as few as 12 minis on a side. We've used up to 60 per side with no problems. After a few sessions, you don't need any paperwork, except for your roster cards. All dice rolls are d10s. You don't need a gym. Games under 1000 points fit well in a 4x4 area. 6x4 works up to 3000 points. $30 can buy you a Warlord company, all in metal. (Two heroes, and two DHLArmy 4-packs.) There is a dedicated group of people on this board who will help you, without condescension or sarcasm. We want you to like the game and play it! If you haven't downloaded the rules, please do so. They have some information on the factions. The Online Store also has tentatively broken down the Warlord line by faction. Please ask any questions, any time. Here, or in PM. BTW, my praise of Warlord is no knock on GW's games, especially Mordheim. I just happen to like a lot of Warlord's mechanics better. "Try both and compare..." Kind of like a soap commercial
Whob
Thanks for your help. I already like this community I'll start off by downloading the rules befor I ask any more questions. The game sounds cheaper then GW so far. And I like that a lot. I played skaven and they were so cheap (points wise) you had to buy a lot to field a whole army, so that sucked. I'm looking forward to converting some friends from Warhammer to Warlord. Oh and by company do you mean like a large enough force to play how big of a game? Moderator Froggy the Great Posted January 11, 2004 Moderator Share Posted January 11, 2004 Yes. Your force is called a "Fighting Company" and is made up of "Troops". Each Troop consists of a solitaire character or monster, or a Warlord/Captain/Sergeant leading a number of Grunts and Elites. And yeah, any questions whatsoever, please ask. We don't bite, and a lot of the Black Lightning demo reps are active on the forums and willing to answer questions.
Whob
I get this when I try to open it ... "Color Space name C50" or a map coding error. I get a lot of blank pages as well. I go from basses to breaking in combat ... Err is that right?
Moderator Froggy the Great Posted January 11, 2004 Moderator Share Posted January 11, 2004 That's probably not the right behavior. Are you maybe using an older version of Acrobat Reader?
Whob
I got it working. I've read what I can for the day, was rushed with time. I found the list of armies but no real information on how they fight, what they're strong at and some back ground. I love the models so far and I'm really interested in playing. Befor I invest the money into a army I want to know some more things about it. I have a question about the models and the future of Warlord ... First, it seems if I want to buy a army pack, it comes with four models as from what I can see. Though there is only two different model pose for say Dwarf Axes. Is there going to be more releases of models and etc so they all don't look the same? I probally wont use all axes in my army or what ever but still I was hoping for more choices and varity. Is reaper going to relases more minis in the future if everything gos well for them? Or am I missing something? And also, are they're going to be more armies in the future? They're is already a lot just for a beta stage, around 11 I think. That sounds pretty good to me. Sorry I don't mean to sound so picky or annoying but I'm just trying to make out some pros and cons befor I buy into it. Even If I don't end up playing I'm still going to pick me up some great minis
Feverdreams
Adobe acrobat 6.0 This might help you out if you don't have the latest version! Like they said, there are many folks here who are very excited about the Warlord game and what it means, and many people who are willing to answer questions. Im still sort of a noob myself. Cheers, Adam
Feverdreams
WHoops, didnt see your post there. The DHL army packs are great for fleshing out your forces, and for now that is pretty much the best way to go to get your grunts, IMO. If you liked to convert, you could buy the DHL or Warlord weapons packs, drill out the hands that are holding the axes, and give them whatever weapons you wanted to. As for more armies, I don't know. There is a whole lot to pick from right now, from organized groups to a mercenary army. Whatever your flavor or favorite fantasy race is, chances are you can play it. I don't think you are being picky, just careful. It is good to see so many questions, so many people jump on a product without thinking about it first. When you boil it down though, Warlord is great, and easy on the wallet! Cheers! Dragon Snack
I found the list of armies but no real information on how they fight, what they're strong at and some back ground. I love the models so far and I'm really interested in playing. Befor I invest the money into a army I want to know some more things about it. At this point in open beta testing all the armies use generic data cards. There will be specialized rules in the upcoming rulebook. Since there are no Dwarven army packs for Warlord, the army packs you are talking about are for Dark Heaven. Now you can still use Dark Heaven models for Warlord, they would just be proxies. There are army packs being released for Warlord specifically.
Whob
I did some searching and found the line of reaper warlord minis. I believe this is it ... http://www.newwave.org/minis/reaper/darkhe.../2000-2025.html So those are the units I can use and etc? I can use all the different characters like the wizards of half-lings in a army they fit in? Thanks for everyones help.
ladystorm
I'm sorry, no those are not Reaper Warlord Minis. Yes, they are Reaper, just not Warlord. Reaper Warlord minis all have Part numbers in the 14000. For example you can find them here, in the Reaper Online Store. The 2000 numbers are the the Dark Heaven Line from Reaper. They can also be found here, also in the Reaper Store.. The Army Packs referenced in the above posts are Dark Heaven Army Packs with part numbers in the 6000s. Also found in the online store. At this point I believe the answer to "Can they be used?" is yes, they all can be used. I do put the disclaimer that I can be and often am wrong (ask my kids). hope that helps, cher Edited January 12, 2004 by ladystorm
Whob
Alright alright, so I can use any Dark Heaven or Warlord mini, and any other kind of model is legal among friends. I'm catching on I think. Thanks for the clear up. Thanks. I think I've got it down to what kind of army I want. Probally Dwarf, so I'll be buying maybe a special character just to get started. FreeFall
Here is what I would recommend to get started. First off, don't buy from New Wave! Just a friendly tip trying to help the new guy not get burned. I'm sure there are a couple hundred here who will back me on this one! Secondly, here are some lists I put together that I recommend to new players at my demos. Each Company contains 2 troops. They include 2 leaders, 8 melee grunts, 8 ranged grunts, a cleric and a wizard. They are a mix of Warlord (whenever possible) and Dark Heaven figs. These are a bit out of date as a few new Warlord figs are out, and they prices are all aprox. Realistically for around $55 you can get a good size force of 2 troops with supporting heros. Average I'd say around 800 points with a Warlord, 2nd level spellcasters and basic spells. Add a few items or use 3rd level spellcasters and you are easily at 1000 points, a good sized battle. Suggested Starter Armies for Warlord Crusaders: $53 14005 Lord IronRaven Justicar (Captain/Warlord) 14037 Sir Conlan, Templar Lightbringer (Sergeant) 06036 Templar Knights (2 packs for a total of 8) (Grunts) 06030 Men at Arms Archers (2 packs for a total of 8) (Grunts) 14036 Halbarad, Good Priest (Cleric) 14045 Valandil, High Mage (Wizard) Overlords: $53 14003 Ashkrypt the Lich(Captain/Warlord) 14004 Ymrilix the False Anti-Paladin (Sergeant) 14024 Eredain, Wizard (Wizard) 14035 Balthon, Evil Priest (Cleric) 06019 Black Legionaires of Malvernis (1 pack of 4) (Grunts) 06055 Men at Arms of Malvernis (1 pack of 4) (Grunts) 06025 Anhurian Crossbowmen (2 packs for a total of 8) (Grunts) Elves: $57 14015 Niriodel, Elven Archer (Captain/Warlord) 14018 Arnise, Half-Elf Warrior (Sergeant) 14022 Lysette, Sorceress (Wizard) 02552 Elisha Lightsedge (Cleric) 06021 Elven Archers (2 packs for a total of 8) (Grunts) 02543 Elladan Swiftbrook, Elven Ranger (total of 4) (Grunts) 02571 Telemar Dawntreader, Elf Warrior (total of 4) (Grunts) Dwarves: $53 14042 Thorgram Grimsteel, Dwarf King (Captain/Warlord) 14019 Durgam Deepmug, Dwarven Warrior (Sergeant) 14039 Dwarf Priest (Cleric) 06014 Dwarven Crossbowmen (2 packs for a total of 8) (Grunts) 06043 Dwarves with 2 handed Axes (1 pack of 4) (Grunts) 06044 Dwarves with Hammer & Shield (1 pack of 4) (Grunts) 02707 Odum Rumblebeard, Dwarven Wizard (Wizard) Orcs: $62 14063 Khakhan Orc Warlord (Captain/Warlord) 14049 Narg Bloodtusk, Orc Warboss (Captain) 14027 Orcs (2 packs for a total of 6) (Grunts) 14061 Orc Sergeant (Hero) 06016 Orc Archers (2 packs for a total of 8) (Grunts) 02486 Ogre Mage (Wizard) 02603 Skrug Gauntclaw Bugbear Shaman (Cleric) Dunemasters: $51 14026 Kadath the Mummy (Captain/Warlord) 14048 Fatima, Mummy Priestess (Cleric) 02485 Neferu (Wizard) 02507 Kalith the Black, Mummy King (Sergeant) 06003 Skeleton Archers (2 packs for a total of 8) (Grunts) 06059 Tomb Guardians (2 packs for a total of 8) (Grunts) Necropolis: $67 (Crypt Bats) 14016 Judas Bloodspire(Captain/Warlord) 14011 Crypt Bat Lord (Sergeant) 14017 Naomi, Vampire (Wizard) 02329 Siobhana, Vampire Queen (Cleric) 14009 Crypt Bat I (3) (Grunts) 14010 Crypt Bat II (3) (Grunts) 14028 Gargoyle (Hero) 06003 Skeleton Archers (2 packs for a total of 8) (Grunts) Necropolis: $51 14016 Judas Bloodspire(Captain/Warlord) 14057 Wight Sergeant (Sergeant) 14017 Naomi, Vampire (Wizard) 02329 Siobhana, Vampire Queen (Cleric) 06003 Skeleton Archers (2 packs for a total of 8) (Grunts) 06028 Plague Zombies (2 packs for a total of 8) (Grunts) Mercenaries: $50 (Barbarians) 14062 Orba Sinhan, Mercenary Warlord (Captain/Warlord) 14002 Grundor Hoardtaker, Barbarian (Sergeant) 02478 Gregor the Winter Wizard (Wizard) 02291 Krupp the Heretic (Cleric) 06037 Barbarians at Heimdall (2 packs for a total of 8) (Grunts) 06007 Highlander Archers (2 packs for a total of 8) (Grunts) Mercenaries: $51 (Humans) 14062 Orba Sinhan, Mercenary Warlord (Captain/Warlord) 14025 Kyla, Bounty Huntress (Sergeant) 02478 Drake Whiteraven, Heroic Wizard (Wizard) 02009 Tolzar the Righteous, Adventuring Cleric (Cleric) 06023 Anhurian Swordsmen (2 packs for a total of 8) (Grunts) 06025 Anhurian Crossbowmen (2 packs for a total of 8) (Grunts) Mercenaries: $90 (Lupines) 14062 Lupine Lord (Captain/Warlord) 02293 Mia of the Blade (Sergeant) 14001 Elandria the Sorceress (Wizard) 14032 Lupine Shaman (Cleric) 14031 Lupine Rager (6) (Grunts) 02528 Kara, Female Archer (3) (Grunts) 02686 Female Archer (3) (Grunts) 02163 Ahlissa of the Blade (2) (Grunts)
