Back in the Cosplay, general question.

Sayyyy if someone were to dress up like Lumpy Space Princess, would it be considered Sci-Fi ?

I mean..she's a space princess from a show about the after effects of fall out and survival.........and it would give me a reason to annoy the Mr with muh Lumpy voice.

Oooh, like the costume in this video?

EDIT: My gods, it embedded. :wow:

Would this be a good place to post the discovery of useful materials and / or techniques for retro sci fi costumes for next year's con, or should I start a new thread in Off-Topic?

I was in Jo-Ann fabrics earlier today in a fruitless quest for fabric (their selection is rather brutally basic, I'm afraid). But I *did* find something cool and sci fi looking.

It's metallic-look flexible mesh tubing, about 8mm in diameter, intended for flower arranging (I gather you loop it around, or something, with the flowers). It's super flexible and super lightweight and comes in 20 yard packages. It comes in various metallic colors and iridescent white, although I gravitated towards straight silver.

I imagine it snaking all over a retro astronaut outfit. It's more delicate, and more showy, than the flexible plastic tubing I found at the hardware store.

Joann's sometimes has "good stuff", but you won't find it in the aisles at the front of the store.  What you want to do is locate the Red Tag aisle or tables. It's typically in the back near upholstery, or the foam/quilt batting section.  There's some fashion clearance there, but this is also where the store puts the weird stuff that comes in on short sample bolts, stuff they can't sell to normal people, stuff that is usually perfect for costuming.  And it's all marked down, too.

Go weekly, or as often as you can, and just look. You won't find good stuff all the time, but you want to keep checking. When you find something cool, buy the entire bolt.  If you have more than one Joann's in town, get into the habit of visiting each in turn just to stay on top of the selection. Each store will have a different assortment of the sample bolts.

I've helped people like you move before. You all are as bad as people with libraries or game collections.

^_^

Hahahaha!

The fabric collection is actually not that bad, it all fits into one small room. The books, on the other hand are taking over the house, but there are two of us collecting those. Yes, you'd hate to help us move.

Buy the whole bolt. Because costumes take more fabric than you think they do, and if you try and go back for more it will be gone.

The only thing I'm thinking about sewing is maybe a cloth neckpiece for the helmet I just ordered.Figure the bubble shield should make a good sci-fi look, especially with an antenna attached.  Only problem is it's only a half-helmet.  Then again, the fact that it's not a full helmet might work better for that retro look.  Casual approach to real-world physics and all.
