I know very little about the Guardians of the Galaxy but it's great to see some of the non-major characters of the Marvel Universe getting what looks to be a high quality film treatmen rather than trying to rehash something that's been done before or shuffling them off to a low budget release.

I suppose since a few of the big names (Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, X-Men) are still tied up in contracts with other studios that pushing the lesser known groups for big releases is a sensible move.

... thinking about it the main reason (of many) that I hated the second Ghost Rider movie is that if it hadn't been made the rights would have reverted to Marvel and it might have had a decent treatment.

They're taking this film exactly as seriously as they should.

"Obscene gesture imminent."

I'm pretty excited.  I'm also interested to see what we'll see in Phase 3.  Right now we're in Phase 2, which will end with Winter Soldier, Avengers 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy.  So far, all we know about Phase 3 is that it will have movies for Ant Man and Dr. Strange.  Also, Vin Diesel has said that during the meeting he attended, they talked about a "merging of the brands," which suggests they've been successful in getting at least one of the other franchises back.  That, or we're gonna see Marvel Universe vs. Star Wars, which would be a beautiful disaster.

I am really excited for this movie. I've always been a fan of epic space adventures, and Marvel's cosmic universe is wonderfully complex and interesting. Plus, they have a great track record of adapting their properties. And James Gunn is a fantastic film maker, I'm a big fan.

The last point may be where this film fails for many people though. James Gunn is a very different writer/director. He started out with Lloyd Kaufman and still retains some Troma sensibilities. I love The Specials, Slither and Super, but there is a reason those films are 6.1, 6.5 and 6.8 on imdb, they definitely aren't for everyone. And there are hints in the trailer that this movie will be very much a James Gunn movie. I can't wait, but I think people going in blind will be in for a big shock. I think Scott Pilgrim had a similar problem, it was an excellent comic adaptation, but not what people were expecting.

I hope I am completely wrong and the movie is a massive hit. I know I'll like it, and I want more epic space adventures, especially outside the Star Wars/Trek franchises.

I hope there isn't a merging of the brands. I know lots of people would like to see Marvel adapt Spiderman, X-Men and Fantastic Four, but the truth is, if they had those properties back, they'd develop them over Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Ms. Marvel and all the other wonderful lesser known characters they have. I would like to see them get full sharing rights to mutants though, I've long wanted to see a Cloak and Dagger film (or tv series).

I wonder if by merging of the brands he meant something more like Guardians of the Galaxy making an appearance in an Avengers film. Oooh, If Guardians properly introduces Thanos then Avengers 3 is both teams against Thanos....

Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy are properties within the same brand: Marvel Cinematic Universe.  They're basically pre-merged, since the events in one movie are explicitly set in the same universe as the other.  As well, Vin Diesel indicated that he couldn't talk about what brands were being merged.  Since Guardians of the Galaxy is expected to be referenced and cross over with other Marvel properties, it's unlikely that's the one he was talking about.  Thus, I expect it's either one of the properties other studios have been developing, or else some other property Marvel/Disney owns.

i know fantastic 4 is being merged. I just don't know after that or how much. Considering the marvel story....I cant imagine the Avengers 2 movie is going to tie everything up with a pretty bow. I don't think the story will be finished til at least 2015. Specially with Winter Soldier, Fantastic 4, I don't know how Antman works in this universe, never read it, Another possible Iron Man (not much information on it) and there's already another plan for another Thor movie. They have to find the other Gems for Thanos' weapon and so far there's only 2 but the one that was supposed to be in Iron Man 3, was never even brought up so honestly, I have no idea what they're doing, @[email protected] I'll be pretty disappointed if they gut the original source like they did the Iron Man movies and completely botch a great story with the Gauntlet.

Trying to remember, isnt X-Men part of this too? I remember something about wolverine being turned into gummys or something. @[email protected]

I want a Benedict Cumberbatch Dr Strange so bad.

Also a 70s grindhouse style Heroes for Hire.

And a real Deadpool movie with Posehn onboard.

Those last two could be the same movie and I'd be ok.

Correction, MissMelons: Fantastic Four is being merged with the X-Men franchise, not the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  If they do get merged, it'll likely be both franchises getting merged with the MCU.  However, Fox has expressed some antipathy for the idea (keeping Marvel Studios from being able to use the word "Mutant," for example).  Also why Quicksilver is being played by entirely different actors in the upcoming X-Men and Avengers movies.

On the other hand, Sony tried to wrangle a deal to get the Osborne building into Avengers.  So I think Spider-Man is a more likely prospect.

There are also rumors of an Inhumans movie.  They may use metahumans as their solution for their inability to use mutants.  Especially if Guardians of the Galaxy helps establish the Kree fairly well.

The Collector is the main baddie in GotG.  He's working on collecting the infinity stones..

I'd always wanted Oded Fehr to play Dr Strange but at 44 I don't know if they would want to go that much older..

Oh yeah! I know with the Infinity Gauntlet though, the Fantastic Four, Xmen, Avengers and some other heroes that I honestly don't know much about, are involved. I figured since they were bringing in the infinity stones and the collector that they would go the route of Infinite Gauntlet. I remember a loooooong time ago with one of the first Spider Man movies that they had Stark Tower in one of the previews, sorta of like an Easter Egg. It would be interesting if they did the opposite with Osborne in the Avengers. @[email protected] Hollywood is so silly with their copyright laws. Just give the fans what they want! :p

I'm pretty excited about this. I haven't learned how Thanos works with all this yet. @[email protected] I'll ask the husband, but I'm excited to see how they are going to pull all of this off and link it together.

Among other things, on the Thanos tie in, Drax was created specifically to kill Thanos. Though he gets up to all kinds of other shenanigans, like the Annihilation Wave. Then there is the Infinity Gauntlet angle, which I get the feeling that Marvel is riding pretty hard after the endings of Thor 2.

This whole thread makes me happy I don't really care what they do as long as the movies keep being awesome.

I left Marvel comics behind in the early 90's (and never read DC outside Vertigo) and so have no vested interest in the Marvel movies, as such they have all been great for me as comic book movies.

And yes my daughters already want me to take them to GotG. :)
