I bought one of these kits at the con. Even though I think I've already learned to paint bones some time ago, it was a great value for a bunch of paints, brushes, figures and a paint case.

Plus, I'll support Wren's projects anytime :)

perhaps it is earlier run bones that don't take paint well.  My step brother works for a company that makes plastics for many injection molded goods and tells me that many of them don't need mold release between each injection, just every so often.  so maybe it is the ones soon after the release is sprayed that have to be washed and later ones don't have enough build up to need it, till the molds are sprayed again.  I will continue washing mine to be sure though, it doesn't hurt.  someone that actually uses an injection molding machine could tell you better than I, since there are many plastics used for different applications and what works for one may not be true for others.

I'm not especially familiar with the process, but it's been standard instruction for plastic model kits to give them a soap n' water bath since I first put glue to styrene.  Same thing, actually.  9/10 kits you probably don't need to bother, and then you get that one that's been coated with Paint B Gone and laughs at your puny attempts to dress it in historically accurate colours.

I don't recall having heard that mold release agents are sometimes only used intermittently. You could well be correct that may be the reason for the differences.

it really is a great kit. the fact it comes with 3 minis (or 2.5 in my case as the evil warrior dude was missing his shield) and the case itself just makes it awesome. I'm going off to house/dog sit for a fellow today, and I am already deciding on which paints to put in the case. based on what I am working on, to take with me.

I picked up one kit for my son's 13th birthday. He loved it, by the way. After looking at the kit during the con, I had to get one for myself for traveling. It'll be nice to have paints and brushes safely packed away in one case. Now to figure out the best way to carry a small palette and the minis themselves.
