ReaperCon Photos Hosted at ImageShack

Recommended Posts

I shot 30 or 40 images during ReaperCon (there were some terrain related pix shot before I got to the con). Imageshack is giving me fits. I will try to get a proper link to the whole folder if I can ever figure out how. (I used to be able to do this a year ago.. ..but they upgraded, curse them.)
Check back later for a working link to ImageShack here.
For now I will try linking a shot or two four taken in the contest exhibits area:
Fire Giantess by Michelle Blastenbrei

The Road to Mordheim by Aaron Lovejoy

Morhvana in the Fall by Mary Profitt

And lastly:

Primeval Princess by Cliff Rockwell

Linked for near-nudity and because ReaperBryan advised me to link it rather than post it when I snapped it. (NSFW if most things Frazetta Boris Vallejo are NSFW at your work.)

There are/were a bunch of folks in the feedback thread commenting that the light in there was poor or dim or something. But, yeah. It was a cell phone. ReaperBryan witnessed me taking the Henry the VIII shot and the Primeval Princess pic.

iPhone5. Point.  Brace Elbows. Click.

(I would happily share my photo-fu of awesomeness, if I had any...)

The lighting was bad in the classrooms due mostly to the curtains. That area was perfect for indoor photos. The main areas had competing light from the outside.

Thank you for your posting of these miniatures from ReaperCon 2014. The photos are fantastic closeups and I am sure that all the viewers appreciate the (figure title & modeler name)...I know that I do! Looking forward with great anticipation to seeing your full album (once you get your problem(s) solved). I am sure that all of us who were unable to attend the Con fully appreciate your outstanding  photo coverage.

I mentioned Henry the VIII above, but I remembered the link is in a different thread:

I'll see if I can fish a couple more pix out of ImageShack:

Kallan of Parallax by Mary Profitt (Kallan looks very different from the front view)

Roper by Adam Rutledge

The crippled process I have to follow to get these posted goes like this:

  1. Launch an app on a phone.
  2. Scroll to one of the pics on the app.
  3. Tap on the pic to enlarge it.
  4. Tap a weird little icon in the bottom corner.
  5. Then scroll sideways to find the "copy link" iPhone button; hit that.
  6. Then launch a text-notes app on the phone.
  7. Then tap on that screen; wait for the paste option to appear; hit "paste".
  8. Then I have to manually enter the ImageShack goobledeygook URL on Ye Olde Desktop.
  9. If the picture turns up in another tab I know it works.
  10. Then I copy that and paste it into the "add image" stickup box here in the post editor. Whew!

All because, 3 months ago, ImageShack decided to do an "upgrade".... <_<

I think the Chief was stalking me! I was trying to get Monkeysloth into a fake news team pose in the two with him, the last two were late night ramblings in the lobby on Sunday night. Pixel is pretending to be interested in whatever I'm blathering on about. Jessica looks better in my glasses than I do in hers, for sure.

HAH!  You talking about stalking.  Sorry but I had to remain in the vicinity in case you needed an intervention.

But really we just both like hanging out with awesome people.  Can't wait until next year.

There's no proof I hid in Schubert's room and watched him sleep.

You got rid of those pics, right?

I had painted a flail as a test model, and then decided to do a group since it was an easy color scheme.
had too many tags, but it's a pillager, wolverine, flail, outlaw, and poltergeist

So I finally fell into the temptation and got my first ground based sci fi minis!(I do have spaceships.)
A Cataphract, conquerer , and a halberd by Reaper minis came in with my horsman today! Sadly the halberd is missing a piece so it may in end up being returned.
So my first order of business was a small conversion to the cataphract
      Before conversion

And the conquerer has donated the necessary parts for said conversion, specifically his smaller missile pods.

A bit of work with an exacto knife removed said weapons.

And a bit more exacto work to make a spot for the pods on the Cataphract.

Some super glue to assemble the cataphract and voila! It is time for paint!

And don’t worry about the Conquerer, I have a conversion in mind for it too. It just might not be a true mech when I’m done.......

More sci-fi stuff to come soon I hope!
And maybe just maybe I’ll try to make a backstory for these guys.
      Thankyou for looking!

Hey look, yet another Jasper topic.....
But this one is different (I hope).  I actually have a time frame in mind, to get this finished before the end of 2020, and submitted for the annual diorama contest.
I love dioramas, and I've been pretty happy with the few I've made. BUT I always put off getting started and then end up rushing over Christmas to get everything done.
So this year I'm starting in January (if just barely) so that I will hopefully get some stuff done before December.
I've had the idea for this diorama since the very first moment I saw my first "sneak preview" of Khanjira (that would have been approximately Fri, Oct 25, 2013, 7:57 PM ADT, according to when I got the email from Kickstarter).
My first though was something like "What a beast! Imagine if he was fighting something from a smaller scale, like CAV...."
So that has been bouncing around in my head ever since.
Then I was messaging with @Pochi a few weeks ago about the contests and got talking about dioramas, and I mentioned this idea, and she said I HAD to do it.....so here we are.
Basic concept is the classic Kaiju attacking a future city harbour. CAVs (any or all of tanks, vehicles, mechs, infantry, maybe even aircraft) defending. (I briefly considered going even smaller scale as I have quite a bit of 6mm stuff too, but CAVs are easier to work with,  I have about a billion of them, and they are awesome).
Today was a beginning.  I grabbed some stuff and laid it out just to get an idea of a size I'm going to want.

Obviously I just grabbed what was handy to get some scale. Khanjira is represented by my 7 days Khanjira (handy, that ). I plan to try to get him a little more upright, since he won't be on his base and at least his front foot will be "under water". With his pose (which I don't think I have the skill or know how to adjust too much) I'm thinking maybe an elevated highway that he has just crushed to be what his right leg is on.  That or a boat of some sort....we'll see.
The box is just a reference for the land, glasses are just some buildings.  I'm picturing something similar to the Halifax waterfront with boardwalks or something and docks/jetties (the grey upside down drawer represents) and then big buildings. Army will be in place along the waterfront, so some barricades and stuff. Possibly a trench of energy blasted ruin from the "breath weapon" if I think I can pull that off.  Again, we'll see.
So just from the mock up, this is going to be fairly massive...like approaching 2 foot kind of dimensions
Not something I would do if I was following advice on building award winning dioramas, but then that's not what I'm focusing on.  I just want to make the image in my mind a reality, and I'm using the contest deadline to hopefully focus me.
I'm also going to have to learn to do a bunch of new stuff for this, which should be fun!
Step one will be to dig out my other Khanjira and start cleaning up up.  And decide on what I'm going to use for a base for this thing.....

This is a Cataphract mech by Reaper minis from Cav with added missile pods from a conquerer mech.
      Paints used:
      Vallejo paints
      white surface primer
      Olive Green
      Dark Brown
      Oily Steel,
      Testors paints,
      Gi. Red
      Flat steel
      Model Masters paints,
      Gun Metal,
      Burnt Iron
      Other colors
      Burnt Umber
      and Black.
Man! I didn’t realize I used that many colors on this thing!
Enough about paint! Time for pictures!

I have enjoyed painting this up and even got to try something new.
Thankyou for looking and feel free to offer constructive critiques!

Yes, a 2020 ReaperCon WIP! And a massive undertaking at that. I'm trying very hard not to nerd out and put this whole project into, er, Project. There's just so many pieces to keep track of, that maybe I'll just use this first post to keep track of things.
Some background stuff, starting with a quote from the "Paint a giant robot! Group WIP" where I wrote some of what's planned:
You can read the rest of that post here: Paint a giant robot post and a second one to see where I'm going with this: PLA print post in same topic
Biggest takeaway is that, while useful, my PLA printer can only do so much. I have a resin printer backed on Kickstarter, but considering it's now 3 years late, I don't think I should hold my breath on it ever showing up. Especially when I can get a new Elegoo Mars resin printer with more capability for relatively cheap (<$300). The PLA machine was bought with both hobby and household goals in mind, and it's served well. But the resolution just ain't there! More on that down the posts.
I also had the chance to gain some experience on  paper plants at ReaperCon (Main post for that in the Terrain section post here: Vellum Paper Plants - Alien Jungle (WIP)
Basically, I have the scrap booking machine to make my own alien plants:
Which now leads me to this WIP. This is going to tie all those pieces together. The robot WIP will still be to get a good camo scheme, but that print job is not going to be used for the final diorama. Instead, that will be the resin printer's job. So, let's break down the WIP work that I can see so far, and will be edited later to add things and mark completions.
      Tasks to be completed:
      Figures Needed
Wight (being pulled down backwards, caught by hidden lines) Gremlin Unit 01 (stole a supply crate and ran; actually just bait to get the larger CAV to follow) Gremlin Units 02 and 03 (trip line pair, successfully snagging Wight across the chest) Gremlin Units 04 and 05 (trip line pair, successful across another part of the chest) Gremlin Unit 06 (burner unit, cut Wight's left gun in two) Gremlin Units 07 and 08 (trap door unit, hiding entrance to jungle path with camo doors strapped to them) Gremlin Units 09 and 10 (trip line pair, successful across right thigh) Gremlin Units 11 and 12 (trip line pair, broken cable across chest, possibly falling over from sudden jolt) Gremlin Unit 13 (ECM unit, some large radar dish looking thing) Gremlin Units 14, 15 and 16 (cargo units, loaded up with stolen supplies and headed out) Gremlin Units 17, 18, 19, and 20 (gun units) Gremlin Units 21, 22, and 23 (missile units) Gremlin Unit 24 (large gun unit) Gremlin Unit 25 and 26 (junked units; scavenged for parts?) Gremlin Unit 27 (2nd style missile unit) Gremlin Unit 28 (personnel carrier unit)
      Wight Conversion
Right Leg: cut from pelvis; reposition Feet: cut off both feet and swap positions since the tread is only on one foot Base: cut away from right foot, possibly keeping full base around left foot Left arm (maybe): cut gun into two pieces, having one falling to the ground after being cut by a heat lance/chainsaw rope
      Details to be included
Camo doors at front leaving marks on the dirt path, but hiding the ambush from the main trail Pieces of old broken larger CAV units around Wight gun cut in two, maybe showing inner details. May have to 3D print an add-on piece Dust being kicked up by the stolen crate (going to try using dyed cotton) IN WORK One cable snapping dynamically, with several bends and twists (superglue on thread?) Multiple vehicle tracks around camp Campfire and tents for people A latrine Other camp details (laundry, chairs, sports equipment, bored carvings, etc)
      Jungle Plants (V=Vellum cuts, B=bought, S=Sculpted, F=Found, P=Printed)
Large lotus flower like plants, but dry land and maybe odd colors with a large conifer cone growing from the middle (V) Jester hat plant (balls on stems around a central point) (V) COMPLETED Spiky yucca like plant (V) Jagged leaf plant (V) Tentacle plant (V) Tripod trees (three spoke trunks) (V) Large palm fronds (S) Coral like trees (P) Horn tree (lots of horn shaped leaves from a central trunk) (P, V) Ball vine (like ivy but with odd leaf shapes) (V) Cabbage-like jungle plants with large wrinkled leaves (V) Fuzzy vines (thin wire coated with static grass) (S) Anything I can buy from N/HO scale train setups and painted alien-ish (B) Reaper figures that can be clipped and painted to be plants (B) Odd trees with strange leaf shapes (onion shaped) (V) IN WORK Random grass-like jungle plants (V) IN WORK Stem ends from mandarin oranges (seriously, pull one off and look at it, stem towards the ground) (F) Anything and everything else (VBSFP)
      Base mounting system
Design and print modular tiles with bristles on top (basically, Bristle Block toys) Allows mounting of all the above jungle plants Fill in around plants with thinned plaster via a syringe to create the ground surfaces
