Castles & Crusades

I'm sure many of us have already seen this, but there is a Kickstarter going on to reprint Castles and Crusades. The project is already funded and well on it's way to passing the second stretch goal. The plan is to print all three core books in color when the pertinent stretch goals are passed.

Any thoughts on this gaming system? I've heard it's a good system to introduce kids to. Does it appeal to adults as well?

I've never played this system, but I may give this a try.

It will appeal to adults as well -- especially if they are familiar and liked old school Dungeons & Dragons.  I guess you can say that it has elements of AD&D with some of the streamlining brought about by d20 (3rd Edition).  In other words, the d20 is the unified mechanic for saves, attacks, and ability/skill checks and AC is ascending (the higher the better).  However, it doesn't have an itemized skill system like you see from 2nd Edition AD&D and onwards.  It's a class based game (just like D&D) and there are archetypes so each class you would expect to see may have skills or abilities tied to that class.  It introduces a system of prime attributes as well to compensate for the lack of skills which effectively gives a bonus with attempting a task or check associated with a particular attribute.

If you've played D&D before, C&C will look and feel familiar while steering away from the complexities that arose in later editions of the game.  Decidedly less expensive than the newest edition of D&D about to be unleashed.  The 5th edition PHB for Dungeons & Dragons will be costing $49.95 (which means I will be checking out Amazon if I decide to order it).

If you have any specific questions about the game, I'll be happy to answer them for you (feel free to PM me).

They are selling physical copies of their modules for $3.50 each.  Are there any you would recommend?  That's a great price.

I really enjoyed To Kill a King. Dark Chateau was awesome as well, but no longer available.

It really is a good system, and very easily portable to other RPG's, which is why I began collecting it years ago.

I switched over to C&C about five years ago after 25 years of 1e/2e AD&D.  I like the streamlined rules, improved character class abilities, and the fact that I no longer have to lug around 500 lbs of books to play a game.  That being said, I was going to pass on this KS - I've got the core books already - but ended up signing up anyway.  Partly just to help Troll Lord out, partly because the rewards have gotten sweet enough for me to throw some money at the KS.

I haven't pledged for more than $1 yet, but I plan to go for the 3 sisters as they call them.

They have now funded for all 3 core books in color.

I'll probably hop in tomorrow after work.

I'm looking forward to learning this new system.

Last 24 hours for this KS'er. Lots of stretch goals surpassed, leaving the backers with colorized core books, lots of modules, swag and PDFs of everything.

This is why I cant resist a good KS'er.

This does look great!  I haven't really been following it -- August 2014 looks very ambitious to convert all three books to color.  Have they revised this delivery date at any point in the campaign, or are they really shooting for this?

Thanks for your help.

EDIT:

I just found this comment replying to this very question:

"We are still hoping/planning on the delivery date we have laid out. And I'm fairly certain it will be available at GenCon, but as you know this has done so well and so many layers that we will monitor it closely. That being said, we will also try and get everything out as quickly as possible and that may mean we do more than one package for some levels. Either way we will keep everyone up to date on the goings on with everything. Trollzah!
Tim."

So the answer is "maybe."
