Volunteering

Recommended Posts

I apologize if the topic is covered somewhere, but I couldn't find the answer to my question on the forums or an affiliated site. If it's already covered, please link me.

How does one go about volunteering for ReaperCon? I loved attending this year and would like to give some of my time next year to making it as great for others as it was made for me. Help?

Depends on what you're volunteering for. Games are the easiest way to get on the volunteer bandwagon. Reaper will post a 'want to host a game?' Thread prior to 2015 if past years have been any indication. At that point chime in.

I was going to make a post like this myself.

From what I've seen Reaper has their own sort of non Reaper affiliated friends that pitch in during the con days, especially before and after. Which I think is great. Wednesday evening Bryan grabbed me to help stock the miniature racks and I was more than happy to help.

What I would consider if I were Reaper would be to institute a more structured volunteering corps. For the following reasons:

-Reapercon is getting to that size point where it would benefit from an organized and directed group of volunteers.

-It's a huge feel-good for the community just to be asked to help out and an even better feel-good for community members that are looking to help.

-It helps make Reapercon even better at little to no cost.

-It's a common trend in medium to large sized conventions and it works.

 -

For example: Someone mentioned in the Feedback thread about the tables in the classrooms being left soiled, dirty and used water cups left out. I noticed this too and really it isn't that big of a deal to me but in my opinion there's no need to put housekeeping duties on the artists that are trying to get in and get out because the time table is kind of tight. Bam, have a volunteer police the classrooms after every class. Here you volunteer A, you go around the classrooms after the 10am and 12pm classes and dump the water, give the tables a quick wipe and look for anything else that needs attention. It would take them 10 minutes tops and solves any issues before they become issues. It also frees up the artists to get on with their schedules. You could have 2 volunteers a day split the classes for a total investment of their time of 20 minutes each.

That's just one example. There's several ways to go about it. You could have volunteers scheduled for certain tasks. You could also have volunteers 'on call' like hey you, come on down to the side entrance, I need you to help pick things up and put them down.

And if you wanted to reward them give them a Reapercon shirt but this one also says Volunteer on the back. Or free admission. Or no reward needed at all. I think I could speak for a lot of people that attend Reapercon that we would do it and help out for free, no reward needed, myself included.

Yes, we needed a Classroom Minion who could go around and put out fresh water and plates. I have had one in past years but she did not attend this year.  ::(:  I'll bring up the Volunteer Corps idea at our meeting tomorrow here at HQ. ::):

This year, with the awesomeness I was shown by reaper peeps, Bryan especially, I would be more than happy to dive in and work as a volunteer. Check the paint and take tables, do a quick clean of the classrooms, or lend my awesome manly muscles to some task

While CAVBOSS will most likely get my free time next year, I would also like to throw my hat in as someone who can be grabbed at random for help with con things.

Make friends with Bryan and Ron.  Once they know you are willing to help they will grab you for a job every time they need a body and see you close by!

I wouldn't mind volunteering either, and i know the mister wouldn't mind. I'd like to help Lady Storm with the paint and take tables so she could be free to do other things. I also wouldn't mind helping the guys at registration. They were so awesome to deal with and get help from whenever necessary. @[email protected] Heck, I'd also be an aide to the artists of needed.

Am I screaming fangirl servant vibes yet? @[email protected]

I tried to let Bryan know that I was available for volunteer tasks, but it appeared that he was busy trying to get the regulars mobilized. Maybe next year.

Sometimes with volunteers it can be more time intensive to train them on task than to simply do the task.

On-the-spot volunteers are wonderful, but I work best when I have time to train.

Still, we will very likely need volunteers next year, so be ready to jump in and get on that list!

I've gotten to the basing point for Ma'al. I decided I wanted to put ivy vines around the base. While I just did the vines out of green stuff I'm not sure what to do about the leaves. I have a GSW leaf punch that I want to use but I'm not sure how to prep the leaves so nothing weird comes in with them. It's been suggested to me to use the oven but was given no further details.  I have other ideas if I can't get the leaves to work but I'd really like to use them since I went through the trouble of getting the punch specifically for this.

So what would you do to real leaves to make them work for basing?

This one was for a facebook competition about color. The rules were, basically, don't worry about anything else but color. Do something different with color. I started with the idea of a dress palette of blue, teal, purple, and magenta. Once I had those colors in place, it was a matter of incorporating them in different areas of the model. I went with cotton candy roses and a galaxy print on the wings. The galaxy was a matter of stippling the dress colors (plus a bit of white) back and forth until the effect was convincing. Then I masked the body of the model and flicked a stiff brush at the wings to make star patterns. I then went back to the dress colors and stippling to blend them in a bit. This was a blast to paint, because I've never really done anything like this before.

I do not understand how this mini is supposed to go together. There is a large hair bulge that is supposed to fit in the hollow of the back. I tried sliding and twisting and cannot get the head to fit on in a dry fit. I cant imagine doing this after painting.  I don't really want to try and paint  and be unable to get into corners. Has anyone posted this anywhere? Things got caught and I see white stress marks on the mini where I had to try and force it off and it makes me super nervous to try anything again.
This is exactly why I would 100 times out of 100 take a poorly glued at the factory mini. It's effectively wasted money for me, because I can't do anything with it.

I recently bought the 2 headed Troll "Lardgulp" to use as a boss in an upcoming battle for my play group. The problem is that compared to the reaper black Rock Troll I received he is not so intimidating...

However, I've seen on other sites a new reaper black or bones 2 headed Troll for pre order. I was wondering if there were any pictures of it compared to the Rock troll, and when will it be available on the site properly?

Yes, a 2020 ReaperCon WIP! And a massive undertaking at that. I'm trying very hard not to nerd out and put this whole project into, er, Project. There's just so many pieces to keep track of, that maybe I'll just use this first post to keep track of things.

Some background stuff, starting with a quote from the "Paint a giant robot! Group WIP" where I wrote some of what's planned:

You can read the rest of that post here: Paint a giant robot post and a second one to see where I'm going with this: PLA print post in same topic

Biggest takeaway is that, while useful, my PLA printer can only do so much. I have a resin printer backed on Kickstarter, but considering it's now 3 years late, I don't think I should hold my breath on it ever showing up. Especially when I can get a new Elegoo Mars resin printer with more capability for relatively cheap (<$300). The PLA machine was bought with both hobby and household goals in mind, and it's served well. But the resolution just ain't there! More on that down the posts.

I also had the chance to gain some experience on  paper plants at ReaperCon (Main post for that in the Terrain section post here: Vellum Paper Plants - Alien Jungle (WIP)

Basically, I have the scrap booking machine to make my own alien plants:

Which now leads me to this WIP. This is going to tie all those pieces together. The robot WIP will still be to get a good camo scheme, but that print job is not going to be used for the final diorama. Instead, that will be the resin printer's job. So, let's break down the WIP work that I can see so far, and will be edited later to add things and mark completions.

      Tasks to be completed:

      Figures Needed
Wight (being pulled down backwards, caught by hidden lines) Gremlin Unit 01 (stole a supply crate and ran; actually just bait to get the larger CAV to follow) Gremlin Units 02 and 03 (trip line pair, successfully snagging Wight across the chest) Gremlin Units 04 and 05 (trip line pair, successful across another part of the chest) Gremlin Unit 06 (burner unit, cut Wight's left gun in two) Gremlin Units 07 and 08 (trap door unit, hiding entrance to jungle path with camo doors strapped to them) Gremlin Units 09 and 10 (trip line pair, successful across right thigh) Gremlin Units 11 and 12 (trip line pair, broken cable across chest, possibly falling over from sudden jolt) Gremlin Unit 13 (ECM unit, some large radar dish looking thing) Gremlin Units 14, 15 and 16 (cargo units, loaded up with stolen supplies and headed out) Gremlin Units 17, 18, 19, and 20 (gun units) Gremlin Units 21, 22, and 23 (missile units) Gremlin Unit 24 (large gun unit) Gremlin Unit 25 and 26 (junked units; scavenged for parts?) Gremlin Unit 27 (2nd style missile unit) Gremlin Unit 28 (personnel carrier unit)
      Wight Conversion
Right Leg: cut from pelvis; reposition Feet: cut off both feet and swap positions since the tread is only on one foot Base: cut away from right foot, possibly keeping full base around left foot Left arm (maybe): cut gun into two pieces, having one falling to the ground after being cut by a heat lance/chainsaw rope
      Details to be included
Camo doors at front leaving marks on the dirt path, but hiding the ambush from the main trail Pieces of old broken larger CAV units around Wight gun cut in two, maybe showing inner details. May have to 3D print an add-on piece Dust being kicked up by the stolen crate (going to try using dyed cotton) IN WORK One cable snapping dynamically, with several bends and twists (superglue on thread?) Multiple vehicle tracks around camp Campfire and tents for people A latrine Other camp details (laundry, chairs, sports equipment, bored carvings, etc)
      Jungle Plants (V=Vellum cuts, B=bought, S=Sculpted, F=Found, P=Printed)
Large lotus flower like plants, but dry land and maybe odd colors with a large conifer cone growing from the middle (V) Jester hat plant (balls on stems around a central point) (V) COMPLETED Spiky yucca like plant (V) Jagged leaf plant (V) Tentacle plant (V) Tripod trees (three spoke trunks) (V) Large palm fronds (S) Coral like trees (P) Horn tree (lots of horn shaped leaves from a central trunk) (P, V) Ball vine (like ivy but with odd leaf shapes) (V) Cabbage-like jungle plants with large wrinkled leaves (V) Fuzzy vines (thin wire coated with static grass) (S) Anything I can buy from N/HO scale train setups and painted alien-ish (B) Reaper figures that can be clipped and painted to be plants (B) Odd trees with strange leaf shapes (onion shaped) (V) IN WORK Random grass-like jungle plants (V) IN WORK Stem ends from mandarin oranges (seriously, pull one off and look at it, stem towards the ground) (F) Anything and everything else (VBSFP)
      Base mounting system
Design and print modular tiles with bristles on top (basically, Bristle Block toys) Allows mounting of all the above jungle plants Fill in around plants with thinned plaster via a syringe to create the ground surfaces
