The longevity of a rock and roll track, in terms of repeated listening, is heavily tied up in the drumming; one reason why a lot of Smashing Pumpkins stuff from the 90's is... a bit 2-D.

If I want focus on drums, it's taiko or hot jazz (swing) for me. It's hard to go wrong with Kodo or Buddy Rich.

 

Not to say that good drumming needs to be the focus, of course.
