The Sword has quickly become one of my favorite bands. I only recently discovered them myself, when Google had their latest album(Apocryphon) on sale for $4, but after listening to it I've fallen in love. I went and bought their Gods of the Earth and Warp Riders albums, as well as two shirts from their website, within about two weeks of first hearing them. They don't come play near me, though, or else I would be trying to get out to see them live. I think the closest they came was Columbus, OH during Rock on the Range, but that's almost a 4 hour drive for me and is really pushing it. If they ever come to Pittsburgh, then I'll be trying to head up there, since it's only an hour and a half drive.

 

As for them being "modern," I don't really agree. Their sound is very much old school rock along the lines of Black Sabbath. Which is one of the primary reasons why I love the band.

Well, I was only called The Sword "modern" in that it was released in modern times, not in the early 70s. But, yes, I agree. I heard their initial single off of Age of Winters in 2006 on Sirius-XM on the metal channel. I saw them open for Metallica in 2008. Then they came to Tulsa later and headlined a small venue called Cain's Ballroom. Awesome!!

Even I know that Black Sabbath is not old school rock. At least third gen rock. 50's rock Elvis, Buddy Holly etc, 60's rock Beatles, Rolling Stones etc. Maybee Pscyadelic Rock, Late Beatles Jeferson Airplane/Starship. Heavy Metal bands Black Sabath etc, Disco Grunge etc after is ages of Rock. Old School is Hilbilly Rock or first wave Brit.

Third gen is still old school, since we're talking 40+ years ago, old timer. But let's not do this in a music thread, it just gets divisive rather than just sharing cool music. T-Bone was doing 'rock and roll' in the 40s. (and T-Bone led to Buddy Guy led to Hendrix led to SRV)

The original bass player for Deep Purple, Nick Simper, left in 1969 (aka was fired ) and formed his own band, Warhorse. Here is a link to their second release, Red Sea, in 1972. I can't find their self titled debut this way easily here at work.

Here is the great southern rock band, Blackfoot, playing their signature tune, Highway Song, at a concert in Zurich in 1982. This version is around 2 minutes longer than the album version. It's awesome!

A little (or a lot) different than what most of you are listening too - I tend to listen to a lot of movie trailer type music when I'm looking for background music. My current favourite is a production company called "Two Steps From Hell", specifically, their new album "Archangel". The whole thing is on youtube, click through, every part of it is epic, it fits into the background nicely, but it also makes whatever you're doing at the moment, one of the most important things in the world.

Oh, well, if you want to talk about REAL versions of bands this is the very first album that Journey released. I am sure that most of you are going to be thinking you have heard all of the Journey stuff on the radio. Wrong! Their first album was nothing like their albums with Steve Perry. They released 3 albums before he came on board with the band to make them more of a commercial success. The man singing on this album is the same person who sang Black Magic Woman for The Santana Band. (Nice tie in there, WB. Thank you, WB. I appreciate it. )

 

If memory serves, this album came out around 1973.

Yeah, a lot of people don't realize Fleetwood Mac is the core of the old John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and Journey was part of Santana's band. Santana was such a hot band, and we saw them open for the Allman Brothers a couple years ago and the band is still really good live, a pleasant surprise. The Allman Brothers were really amazing live through the aughts, but they're finally starting to show some wear as Jaimoe struggles. We still go to see them and it's still an amazing show and I highly recommend any fan of guitar rock check them out while you can. The interplay of Trucks and Haynes is one of the best in history (also check out Tedeschi Trucks, mmm Susan). Here's a great tune from a few months ago (I also really dig Oteil on bass, amazing)
