80001: Ape-X in white

I am painting up my bones Ape-X based on inspiration from this picture http://www.deviantart.com/art/White-Gorilla-270784101 and I want to try NMM on him as well. I do have the L2PK3 on NMM, but I have only read the instructions. Since there is only a little metal on this figure, I can take my time to get it right. So far I have only done base coats. The armor hand will be a red metal and the gun a blue metal and the other metal parts chrome. Depending on how this goes, I might do OSL on the cyber eye as well.

Loving the colour scheme so far! Really good idea to use a vibrant red against his white fur.

Ah, I knew he had a name but didn't remember it.

 

I want to get him done in time for the spaceship superstar contest. My mother in law arrives tomorrow to stay for a few months, so I can use this to occupy myself.

I may need to steal your paint job for when I get around to painting Ape-x. I already have a back story for it. The zoo where Snowflake lived hires a mad geneticist to try and clone their long lost and popular attraction, Snowflake, but things go horribly horribly wrong.

I shaded and highlighted all of the non-metal parts today. For some reason, the veins on his belly are showing up really poorly with the cellphone camera, they look much better in person. I had to fiddle with the saturation to get it to look a bit more like the miniature. Now that I look at the picture on the big screen, I do need to go back and wash some of the fur to bring back more of the definition. Especially on the shoulders, then put in the highlights more carefully.

 

I must admit to some trepidation over getting started on the metal, but I'll get there.

Never once occurred to me to do Ape-X in WHITE...

I wasn't happy with the definition of the fur, so I washed it with a mix of rainy grey and ashen blue (the same as his lighter skin tone) and then used the edge brushing technique (from L2PK5) to just highlight the fur with leather white.  I still plan to do another quick highlight with linen white, but I thought this side by side picture captured the difference another 30 or so minutes of work made.  The older picture is the one with the messed up white balance that makes the red too bright and the background brownish.

 

Next step, NMM!

A lot has happened in the last two weeks!  It isn't so much that I haven't had time to paint but that I haven't had energy to do anything other than sit on my behind or change diapers.  I'd still like to get White Ape-X done for the spaceship contest though so I'm doing a crash course in NMM.  Here's my attempt at red, blue and chrome will be tomorrow.  I know it is kind of coarse but at least it looks a little shiny?

The top picture really shows off the nmm, the bottom not so much. The contrast is the difference.

The top view is better than the side, I'll have to go clean that up. I tried a few things a little different on the blue, I think I can improve it (but the Spaceship Superstars deadline is swiftly approaching).  

 

Here is the first pass at the blue and chrome.  I'm kind of at a loss for how to do the skull cap.

Here are the shots for the Spaceship Superstar contest.  Any suggestions for last minute fixes before I enter them?  I know there are a great many things that could be better, especially the skull cap and the chrome disks in his chest, but I don't really know how to do them better. I need a lot more NMM practice.
