Ow my wallet...

The time has come to talk to you about our next Kickstarter project, provisionally entitled "Darklands: New Kindreds", or KS3 as it is more popularly known amongst backers (which is a bit of a misnomer as it would be our fifth project, but that's by the by).

The provisional start date of this project will be Monday the 15th of September and it should end a month later on Monday the 13th of October. We reckon that's twenty-eight days, which is plenty of time to run a project of this size.

So what's Darklands: New Kindreds all about?

Well, as it says in the title, it's about bringing new kindreds to the world of Darklands!

This project has been mooted for a long while simply because Darklands has ten main kindreds, two of which - the Atalantes and Érainn - have not yet been explored, even though there's lots of interest in them.

You see, in Darklands: a World of War we decided to concentrate on six kindreds (Angelcynn, Brythoniaid, Fomoraic, Khthones, Norse and Ysians) and then added another two kindreds with the Darklands: First Edition project (the Albainn and Byzantii) - which leaves the Atalantes and Érainn rather by the wayside. Now's the time to redress that!

Who are the Atalantes?

The Atalantes are a decadent, somewhat depraved civilisation that live upon the crumbling islands of Atalantia in the Atlantic Ocean - what we now call Atlantis. Their society and their home is dying, but they cling to the ancient rocks even as they are assaulted by their former progeny and slaves, the Khthones - although many believe they should take to the seas and relocate to the Lands of Darkness to the east, which inevitably causes conflict with those that already live there.

In Darklands, the ancient Greeks were descended from the Atalantes, and so their look and feel will be very similar to those who know what a Hoplite looks like - but through their use of arcane technology, constructs of bronze (such as Talos) and ruthless slavery they will also have a very different feel.

Who are the Érainn?

The Érainn are, put very simply, the dark age Irish. Their society is mostly Christian but fairly barbaric, and as they are assaulted by the Fomoraic and the Norse and the Atalantes and many others, they are becoming more and more martial and turning to the old ways of Danu the Earth Goddess.

Thus, Irish warrior-bands like those of old now defend the north of Eriu against the threat of the sea devils and raiders from elsewhere, and Danu herself lends aid to her people through the beasts of the bog, peat and marsh - terrifying creatures with an implacable hatred of all that destroy the natural world. With those at their side, the Érainn might - just - be able to survive this age of darkness.

How will the project work?

We can't say too much about the project right now simply because not everything has been nailed down, but we can say that the main rewards will be based around Starter Sets, rather like Darklands: a World of War.

There will be at least two Starter Sets for each of the new kindreds - one that contains infantry, and one monstrous infantry - as well as options to include generals, commanders, sorcerers, monstrous beasts and much else besides. They'll also include dice and tokens as required, to get you started immediately.

What about the other Kindreds?

We haven't forgotten those!

There'll be Starter Sets for each of the other kindreds, and although we won't go into specifics right now we can tell you that there'll be new warriors and alternates for them all. So whilst the project is designed to fund the creation of new kindreds, if you like the others there'll be plenty for you to fund!

What about a Sneak Peek?

Absolutely... here's something to whet your appetite, some artwork for the Érainn by Marius Bota!

From today's update

What about a Sneak Peek?

Absolutely... here's something to whet your appetite, Cormac of the Red Hand, aCuradh (pronounced "CUH-reye") or Champion of the Ã‰rainn, by the lovely Sam Lamont!

Cormac's miniature will be stood on a rock, so it can fit on a 30mm base, or (as a limited edition project exclusive) on a Gabrax, for those who like that kind of thing ;o)

That's it for this week people... until next week, keep it Darklands!

Here's the minis I mentioned in the AMG KS thread, sculpted by none other than the mighty Bob Olley! I never realized how many Olley sculpts I have.

Kinda nudity but not really but one dude is definitely nekkid:

I hope Rob puts in some nekkid zerkers!

I spent most of the money saved up for this one in mounts for the great deal on beasts.

Not really sure what to expect from these two factions so it's hard for me to get excited. Normally Rob is much looser with concepts--which helps me decide how much I want to spend ahead of time. Not sure why he's being all secret.

I suspect he's got a lot less done to show us,

I think at least some of the stuff in the previous KS were done and paid for a while back, just waiting for the money to become available to hand them off to a sculptor, with these final two kindreds I get the impression this is not the case and they well have had to find the cash to get them done (and the artists with the time to do them) more recently

so I speculate that Rob's keeping a lot of it secret to use to keep the actual KS pushing along

My plan is really to stay out of this one. I already have a sizeable pile of Mierce stuff, of which I have so far only painted one troll and assembled two more trolls and the hydra, and the amount of stuff I have coming down the line is getting to be ridiculous (still some stuff from KS2, then my All the Units pledge from KS2.5, and finally the eight big beasts from the last one). Like Dan, I'll admit I'm nervous about being tempted back in though.

Absolutely... here's something to whet your appetite; Kretos, an Ogros of Bronze - a mighty construct of the Atalantes that stands a little shorter than Talos, but much wider - by the lovely Dan Warren!

He can swivel around his waist, the better to strike enemies all around him...

I'm definitely going to check it out.

I don't know much about Mierce miniatures. I was at GenCon and the Warstore had bins of their miniatures at stupid low prices - $5-$15 dollars for these large minis. I pick up quite a few and they look amazing. I have no idea why they were so cheap but I'm not complaining.

Dang, if I would have known I would have sent someone to raid.

I kind of feel this KS is coming a bit too soon. I initially thought KS2.5 was supposed to just tidy up a few loose ends from KS2, but it grew into a massive project. And the last one, for the mounted beasts, started as a little mini-kicker but ended up pretty big when they released the back catalogue beasts. We're in the midst of shipping KS2, with KS2.5 and the beasts later this fall, winter and spring; it just feels like they are running the KS's at a faster rate than they are completing them.

Of course, the problem is probably mostly that I went in so damn heavily on all these three last projects; I just can't keep up. ::):

::o: Which ones did you get? And yeah, I agree; the miniatures are fantastic.
