Show & Tell

Baugi, look on eBay if you want that "classic dire troll". PP has redesigned him, and he is now cast in plastic. More or less the same, but his head is different the one I show here. This one is also metal. Very heavy on a 50 mm base.

By any chance have you done a tutorial on how you painted that Dire Troll? If you haven't would you consider doing one?  I would love to know what colours you used to get that skin tone and how you did your blending.

 Hey Anne, I'm glad you like the Dire Troll Mauler. No I haven't ever written a tutorial on anything....lol. I'll tell you what colors I used though. All paint used is Reaper paint.

The FLESH TONE is a Reaper teal triad.

Shadows = Deep Ocean, and Deep Ocean + black

Base = Marine Teal

Highlights = Marine Teal + Surf Aque, Surf Aque, Surf Aqua + Ghost White.

I lightened the palms of his hands more then any other part of the teal flesh.

The GEMS. Reaper paints as well.

Shadows = Ritterlich Blue

Base = Brilliant Blue, Brilliant Blue + Cyan Blue

Highlights = Cyan Blue, Cyan Blue + Ice Blue(HD), Ice Blue, Ice Blue + Ghost White, Ghost White

I started with the darkest tones here, and worked up lighter. Eventually I began only hitting the edges of the gems with Ice Blue + Ghost White, and then finished up by hitting those hard gem edges with just Ghost White.

QUILLS/NAILS. I used two triads linked together by 1 additional color. I actually started light, and blended to dark on these.

Golden Blonde --> Amber Gold --> Tanned Leather --> Leather Brown(09030) -->Intense Brown -->Blackend Brown -->Walnut Brown.

I blend much better now then I did on this troll. I have another post titled "Reaper Oni". You can see what these colors look like blended together by looking at the Oni's horns, OR by looking at the spike on the end of his club.

LOIN CLOTH.

This was a series of reds.

Shadow = Bloodstain Red + Black, Bloodstain Red

Base = Clotted Red + Carnage Red, Carnage Red

Highlights = Blood Red + Fire Red, Fire Red

I hope this helps you out Anne. Let me know if you have any other questions. Also, the teal triad works really well with ALL Privateer Press TrollBlood characters from the game "Hordes".

Who's the manufacturer on those? (Other than the Mauler, of course.)

Beautiful work all around, but damn... You just sold me a Dire Troll. Just amazing.

You can still get the classic metal Mauler from the PP online store. Good luck finding it for less than retail elsewhere...

Thank you so much for answering my question. I've a figure similar to him and your palette would work perfectly.  And to make this even better, I have all those colours!!!

I'm not generally a fan of the "blue trolls"-look. But that dire troll look really really nice! Well done! :D

Might actually consider a troll army in the future, if I can get that color right!

Dsmiles, Sakura (Japanese woman) & Kitsune (Fox girl) are Bushido Mini's produced by GCT Studios. Dixie Dynamite (Big gun) & Female Wizard (Red Dress) are Freebooter Mini's.

Thanks. Between the two companies, I just spent about $170. Inspired by your painting, of course.

      I had it sitting on my bench for more than a year. Brought it on sale and it was nice working with such a heavy model, thought it did fall apart a couple times (Since I am not using it for gaming, I did not pin it).  The fourth picture seems to have the closest red to how it looks in real life.

      Painted this to use in my upcoming DnD campaign....freakin hard to paint. I could tell this was going to be difficult for me from the get go, so much stuff. Sometimes I wish models had approximate difficulty levels on the boxes.

      The trio that the player characters will encounter are towards the bottom.

      Players should be trudging though a swampy bayou for a bit before they encounter a soft candle light glow in the distance ahead of them. The magicked candles begin to block the players night vision as they get closer. If they turn away, the candlelight will wink out and reappear in front of them again. Eventually they will encounter Papa Hoodoo and his gator zombie constructs Leblanc and Boudreaux.  I may pick up a reaper dire gator as a possibility during the encounter.

      The pics below are more of a forest than swamp, but was having some fun with taking pictures this morning and I don't have any swamp terrain.

      https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/privateerpress/warcaster-neo-mechanika

      Story
       Warcaster: Neo-Mechanika is a high-speed hobby miniatures game in which players collect and customize a battle force of 35 mm-scale warriors and warjacks and play out epic, scenario-driven battles across a tabletop.
      A Warcaster is the pinnacle of power, a being capable of harnessing and manipulating the cosmic forces that can fuel mechanika and conjure ancient reality-warping Cyphers. The mind of a Warcaster has been forged into the ultimate weapon: by channeling Arcanessence, they are able to coordinate an entire battle force while simultaneously augmenting that force’s combat prowess by remotely channeling arcane energies into their weapons, armor, and even their formidable war machines.  In a galaxy beleaguered by constant conflict, the Warcasters are the champions of their nations, worlds, and empires, waging war with each other like gods moving pieces across a chessboard.
        In Warcaster: Neo-Mechanika, YOU are the Warcaster. You are not a pawn on the tabletop; you are the god making the moves. Charged with valuable Arcanessence, you will customize your powers and the load outs of your warjacks, choose the composition of your battle force, and lay waste to all that stands before you.

      Another one that was a horror to glue. Frustration of the impossible and getting things to line up juuuuuust. right, seems to be the Bushido model way.

      Painted for a friend. I had an extremely difficult time from beginning to the end. I am starting to hate gluing little things. The final straw was when my superglue had a reaction with the Vallejo dirt and ate away a chunk of it. Walking into the room and seeing the model hanging by a thread of goo...a nice stream of curses followed. Finally finished, but with little joy.
