Sanael's Legion of Everblight

Recommended Posts

I've had a few paint sessions, mostly short ones, but I've done a bit more work on the wingadings.

Laid in the shadows on the membranes of the Angelius and Hellion, and started pulling up the highlights. The Harriers (the two little guys) are just about done; really I just need to finish out their bases.

Nice. Mine's a lower hue-contrast color scheme, but I make up for it in the color value contrast. Pale blue-purple skin tones with purple-black chitin. I'm sure there's some in my (former) consolidated Show Off thread, if you'd like to check them out.

I really dig the high hue-contrast color scheme you're using. It keeps them visually interesting.

Heh. I took the easier route and just clicked your warmahordes link in your sig. I've looked through the album before, a few times. I really like the look of your Ret stuff; the Colossal (Hyperion?) looks really nice. Very stealth. Your Legion stuff looks good, too; I would expect the value-contrast pops on the table pretty well.

I'm glad you like the colors I'm using; it's a bit louder than most of the Legion I've seen, but I think it works pretty well.

OK... a few things tonight.

The Beast Mistress and Harriers will likely be in Show Off by the end of the week...just a bit of snow flock needs to go on their bases. Very pleased by this; I played a game with the harriers this week and looove them a bunch. Very glad to have sealer on them.

The Forsaken is coming along...

The Angelius is very close. I need to pull up the highlights on the wing membranes and there's a patch of bare primer under the tail barb, then he's done.

Glad you like the Angelius. I couldn't leave him quite so land-bound!

I know about eAbsy...I actually took a look at her at my flgs over the weekend. BUT, I've promised not to buy her until I have all my other warlocks painted. Which is.fine, because pAbsy is almost done and pVayl isn't too far from "almost done." And it will let Excigence release, so we'll see eAbsy's theme list so I'll know what else to buy along with her. Probably two or three beast packs, is my guess.

A bit of work on the Sorceress on Hellion. I did a little bit of metallics work on a few pieces, so I put down the basecoat and bronzes on her.

The basecoat is a 50/50 mix of Marine Teal and Marigold Yellow. I discovered this mix by accident, but I really love the green it makes, and it works very well under the Blighted Gold.

I also did some work on Absylonia and Annyssa Ryvaal, but it's pretty much the same, so no photos there.

More work on the Sorceress. Basecoats on the figure.

The black leathers are 50/50 Walnut Brown (RMS) and Coal Black (P3). The cape and skin are basecoated in Violet Red (RMS). The cape will remain this color, highlighted up into orange; the skin will come up into blue. It's weird, but it works. The whites are Underbelly Blue (P3) and Ghost White (RMS), or some combination thereof.

Also some final detail work on Absylonia. Other than the flock that needs to happen on her base, what do y'all think? Anything glaring that needs to happen?

Thanks for looking!

Some work on pVayl today. White-on-white freehand looks pretty awesome in the hand, but it's hard to photograph.

The photo on the right is more true to the colors. The weird little "=" ridges in the middle of the dragon design are on the pewter, and I didn't notice them until I'd already painted more than I wanted to repaint. Ah, Well.

The freehand is on the front, too:

I also got several more points worth of Legion, so my painted/owned ratio has gone down. Now in the queue is another Carnivean/Ravagore/Scythean kit and the Neraph/Seraph kit, as well as two more Forsaken.

And eventually I'll start another WiP thread for what is now officially my second faction...I now have a battlebox of Retribution of Scyrah...angry anime elves, here I come!

This is such a beautiful sculpt! I spent a lot of time just looking at it, thinking. I did not really achieve my vision, but done is done. This small dragon is applealing enough I may do another some day when I have more time to devote and hopefully more skill. Trying for a tropical look, stated with parrot colors, but that didn't work - and this was where I landed!

"This is a board game version of the classic skirmish game and aims to give the same feeling as the original, while making it more accessible and “ready to pick and play”. Choose your agenda between the Protectors and the Destroyers, lead your units into the city and hunt down your opponent, wreaking havoc in all that stand in your way!"
MonPoc's been through two versions. First, a prepainted collectile mini's game, then a metal one. This unpainted plastic KS is compatible with the second version. The pitch is that it's less expensive than the metal version (and there's no blind purchasing), but it's still gonna be expensive, especially if you go all-in. You play with only two monsters per game, so, imo, the core set and SG's should keep most casual players satisfied. Although the game has multiple factions, you can play the "good" ones together, and the "bad" ones together. Core game is for two players (1v1, solo, coop). Battle Royale is for 3-4 players, and adds Apex monsters as enemies for coop, or bigger monsters for regular play. With this being day three, one dual-faction add-on has been revealed.
Game rules are based on the existing Privateer Press Monster Apocalypse v.2 rules. KS is run by Mythic Games. (Better than the reverse, imo!) I assume plastics are made in China, which has had some economic instability, energy shortages, supply chain issues, and shipping issues. The game won't be delivered for at least a year, so obviously today's shipping issues may not affect delivery. But, speaking of shipping, the core box *is* large, and shipping starts at $35. I'd expect to pay more.
Other kaiju boardgames exist, including an officially licensed Godzilla one. Mythic has not said if this game will be available retail. I wouldn't be surprised if the discounts expected by distributors make this and other high-end KS games difficult for retail. Also, the high MSRP may keep FLGS customers from picking up the game (much easier to sell $150 of Magic cards than a $150 boardgame, imo).

Three days into the campaign, and they've unlocked about half as many monsters as in the core box!

I love doing WIPs. And I've got a lot projects I should finish 😊. And since there is still no progress with Barros and Tempest (this time because I'm still waiting for a new base to be shipped), why not start something new?
I've yet to paint my first dragon, so I'll use this opportunity to do it. I confess, I'm cheating a bit here, since I'm going to paint the white dragon by Dark Sword Minis - that's a very small dragon. But still, he's got wings and teeth and claws and scales, so definitely a dragon, yessir!
I absolutely love this mini. I bought it many years ago, but the horns went missing. Fortunately, when I ordered some more minis from Dark Sword a while ago, I was able to order some spare horns, so now I'm good to go.
Here he is, assembled and prepped:

Now I have to decide on a paint scheme, which I can't bring myself to do. There are three ideas I have at the moment:
paint him up as an ice dragon. I'm thinking white with pinkish/greenish undertones and a base made with transparent crackle paint. There was a very cool version of an Ice Dragon a while ago on this forum, but I can't seem to find it any more.  paint him up as a star dragon using the technique I learned at RVE in Kevin Holderny's class. I used it on a coat so far, maybe it looks very cool on the dragon's wings. paint him up as a real world snake. Now there are so many possibilities...
      Decisions, decisions...

Some more work on the base.

Well, it's been a while since my last WIP project so here's what happens when you browse the Reaper Discord late at night and think "Hey! That's a FANTASTIC idea!". The Discord is home to the Reaper Challenge League and it has many, many categories. My favorite is the seasonal/holiday one. Simply put, you pick a holiday or event(ie.Christmas/St Patrick's day/The Coopers Hill Cheese Race etc) and paint a mini to match the theme.
As many of you are aware, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and the signature colour for that is pink. A few people were talking about doing pink minis for the challenge and I figured that I've already done a multicolored dragon, so how hard can it be?
This, my friends, is what this work in progress thread is about to attempt. Abandon all sanity and colour sense, all ye who continue to read here, because things are about to get fabulous!
First of all, the choice of dragon needed to be considered. Too small and you don't get the impact, too large and you're painting the beast all year. I needed a nice, mid sized dragon and I happened to have a spare of this bad boy.

I've always loved Narthrax. His angry face, the unusual tilted pose and the awesome scale placement are just fantastic. He's truly one of my favorite dragons and I've been looking for an excuse to paint him something different from the standard chromatic or metallic dragons for quite a while now. Most of the my painting is for tabletop gaming purposes so it's nice to shift gear once in a while.
So first things first, I gave him a nice soapy bath to prepare him for painting. Sorry, no photos of that- a dragon has to retain some dignity! Here's the 'after' shot!

I glued on the leg and tail and left the head and wings separate, mostly for ease of painting. Then I gave home a good, slightly thinned coat of Blue Liner 9066. This provides a nice, even base coat and helps prevent the paint rubbing off further down the road.

And thus the madness begins! This is where I started giving every single scale a layer of Rich Indigo, making sure that there's still a good amount of the dark liner in the shadows.

At this point I realized that a test area was probably a good idea, so I started playing around with highlight colours, finally deciding on Witchcraft Purple 07977 and, appropriately enough, BCA Pink which Reaper are kind enough to put into online orders in October. I'm still trying to figure out exactly how bright to go but at least it doesn't look entirely hideous! Admittedly, your milage may vary on this one. Heck, I might hate pink by the end of this endeavor, you never know.

Lots of blocking in the purple and pink, with an attempt on the belly scales. Not entirely sure about that, might need to see how bright the upper scales go.

More blocking in of the scales and a bit of work on the wings, using Rich Indigo and Desna Blue.

Then the Witchcraft Purple starts getting layered on in earnest. This is the point where I start to second guess myself. He's starting to look like a particularly dangerous fuschia....

That's pretty much where the mini is now, hopefully I haven't bored you all too much or damaged your retinas. I'm hoping to get some more work done tomorrow so I'll keep posting as often as I can. I think that this is one of those projects that needs attention little and often.
      Thanks for looking everybody!
