A couple of updates, since I was too tired to do one last night.

Yesterday I finished up the hair and beard on the king.

Then today I base coated the metal and "leather" (I'm picturing some sort of very large creature being needed here) on the bodyguard.

It takes SO LONG to cover these guys with paint!

Think I'll go prep the last fig for my exchange.  Hopefully I can get that done this weekend (if not, Nov 11 is my buffer day) and get back to working on my base for the diorama.

Finally found a few minutes to put up some more progress shots.

post-8239-0-97586300-1415759562_thumb.jpg

Friday I shinied up a few metal bits on the bodyguard and started base coating the armor and leather on the king.

post-8239-0-42906900-1415759557.jpg

Monday I realized I'd forgot my black wash at home (for my fall exchange) so just finished the base coats on the king then started on the metal coat.

Today being Remembrance Day/Veterans Day, I spent some time thinking about my recently passed grandfather, who was a Canadian artillery gunner who served in Europe during WW2.

Then powered through the rest of the painting for my exchange and started on the base.

Ok, I've been slack about posting these...

First off, if you play Arcadia Quest, this is how you kill just about anything with a Rusty Sword....

On to the giants.

post-8239-0-38644200-1416538646_thumb.jpg

This was with one wash on the bodyguard and more of the metals done on the king.

And the next day I did a second wash on the bodyguard and finished the base metals on the king.

That was last week.  This week I've done nothing so far. But that's because  I've either been in physio (love my back, really I do....) or in first aid training (this morning's video on sucking chest wounds was a GREAT way to start the day....) every day at lunch. And evenings have involved exciting things like installing winter tires.

But tonight I cleaned up more painting area so I can get back to working on the base for the diorama this weekend.

First up is figuring out how to mount Lavarath (he is one heavy dragon...Bones as spoiled me) so that I can paint him....

Occlusive dressing for the win!

These guys are looking awesome Jasper. I'm finally about to start finishing up my diorama, and it makes me feel lazy that I'll only have one giant thing in it. I can't wait to see where you're going with this!

Been doing a lot of puttering this weekend.  I'm on call for work so getting into anything too huge isn't a good idea since I could get a call in the middle of it. Plus, I've had calls between 1-4 am almost every night, so my focus isn't the bes....ooo, shiny.....ummm, what was I saying?

post-8239-0-61037300-1416781092_thumb.jpg

So I've put "pins" in the feet of Lavarath.  They are actual 1 inch (or so) spiral finishing nails, so should hold just fine.  I've drilled the holes in the tower top.  I think I'll probably put a thin-ish piece of metal in the top of the tower to attach the pins to.  Something with more strength than just the dental plaster, anyway.

I've also attached Lavarath's left wing.  Let's see if it holds without pins (the tab is quite deep on it) as this is going to be a display piece, not a game piece.

And I've built a bunch of wall segments.  I'll probably do some more of that this evening, maybe even look at getting a bit of start on some actual structure.

And not pictured, I've prepped a few parts for the fire giants.  They are headed in to work to get painted.  Still haven't done anymore on the giant hammer, as you can see in the background.

So I figured out some of why I'm been too tired to paint, as well as why my eyes of been messed up the last few days....fasting blood sugar should NOT be 18.8.....

Sigh.

Made it over 14 years with just diet control.  So back on low carb and see how quickly it goes back to normal. Hopefully before the Doctor puts me on anything.

And hopefully I'll get some energy back.  I'm going to need it to get this thing done on time!

Think I'll spend a few minutes gluing blocks together so that I feel I've accomplished something this week.

Well things are still kind of wonky with my sugars, but can still build walls.

post-8239-0-27952100-1417355757_thumb.jpg

This was part way through what I got done last night.  I've got a few more rows on the tower since.  Soon I'll need to decide exactly where the breach is.

Hardest part so far is trying to get the angles the same on the end blocks I'm cutting.  Think I'll end up "adjusting" them with the dremel to smooth out the variances.

Great start to the diorama base, have you already glued the wall to the polystyrene?

What's the plan to cover it for ground texture?

Yes, everything on there is glued in place.  With plans for the center of the wall to be destroyed, I figured it was the safest way to keep it all lined up.

The courtyard (or whatever you call the inside of a keep) which is in front in the pic, will be tiled with Hirst Arts 1 by 1 floor tiles.  The outside will likely be slopped down and covered with turf, maybe some craters and some sharpened stakes or something similar.

the area between the inner and outer wall would generally be referred to as the lower Bailey  while the main area around the inner keep would be the upper bailey.  The lower bailey was the area the troops practiced in and some of the dirty work of the keep took place (can't let the ladies be offended after all).

* Bailey - The defended ward or courtyard inside the castle walls, includes exercise area, parade ground, emergency corral. (Lower bailey: in the motte castles the space between the outer enceinte and the motte or mound was lower than the lord's quarters and so formed a lower courtyard. This term is used for the open space given over to the outbuildings in opposition to the upper bailey or the lord's courtyard.).
