The primer looks very rough, though. Did you spray prime during high humidity?

 

No, it's not that. I did a two-stage undercoat: black first and then a downward-raking coat of white to bring out highlights. The white was sprayed from a bit of a distance to make sure that it didn't pool, so by the time it landed on the figure it was already starting to cure, which is what causes the granular effect. I could have thinned it more, but then I'd have had to do multiple coats and would have started filling in detail visually. It looks OK in real life; the granularity is really only visible in magnification, as here.

Here's another version of the same figure — on this one I dry-brushed the white fabric over the top of the sprayed undercoat, which was quicker than liquid painting but has little else to recommend it. Her eyes look a lot further apart than on the first one.
