In spite of my initial inclinations to leave all the townsfolk in stunning black & white, I started painting them in colours after all.

The first of them out the gate is this housemaid or charlady or serving girl or whatever you want to call her. She's figure number 77088: Townsfolk: Grandmother, though she doesn't look very grandmotherly to me.

 

This could be quite a flexible gaming piece in terms of time period; she could serve for pretty much any time from the 1300s to the 1920s.

No, it's not that. I did a two-stage undercoat: black first and then a downward-raking coat of white to bring out highlights. The white was sprayed from a bit of a distance to make sure that it didn't pool, so by the time it landed on the figure it was already starting to cure, which is what causes the granular effect. I could have thinned it more, but then I'd have had to do multiple coats and would have started filling in detail visually. It looks OK in real life; the granularity is really only visible in magnification, as here.

Her face is really well done. I like the muted palette with that touch of colour on the bow of her bonnet.

Here's another version of the same figure — on this one I dry-brushed the white fabric over the top of the sprayed undercoat, which was quicker than liquid painting but has little else to recommend it. Her eyes look a lot further apart than on the first one.

It's a very nice couple of variations (although it looks like the figure has some harsh flash along the left sleeve and hip). I like the different approaches.
