Please Help. Which CAV's are "Big Enough"?

Bringing this Thread back with a few more size questions....  Skip to post 11.

I'm considering dropping my early bird pledge and instead pledging just for the CAV's that I want.  The reason is that I'm looking at these for use alongside the rebased Mechwarrior Clix minis that comprise most of our club's 10mm sci-fi armies, so it's the larger ones that I'm interested in.

This picture on the KS got me thinking.

The Emperor on the left is the size and bulk  (or bigger) that I'm mostly looking for, with the Wight next to it being the smaller end of what would be most useful.

Can you folks tell me which CAV's in the campaign so far are of similar dimensions to the Emperor?

Also, if anyone has an actual height measurement for the Emperor, that would be supremely useful as I don't have "Sir Forescale" in my collection

Thanks!

Of those so far announced the Ronin, Voodoo and Simba are pretty large, Falcon is quite big too (almost as tall as a Dictator inc Missile Launchers).  This is based on the Metal models I have.  The Ronin was up for rescaling so may be a bit smaller than my metal ones now.

If I could figure out how to post pics I would show you. I have the metal Thunderbird, Emperor, and Butcher. As well as the Nightshade and another CAV I can't remember the name of right now. I also have rebased, repainted Mechwarrior figures with size comparison pics. Just can't figure out how to post them....

Emperor is one of the biggest figures made, and Wight is no small fry...they're towards the upper end of CAV sizes, though a sizable chunk aren't much smaller than Wight.

The best thing I can give you for scale is that the hex base Emperor is standing on is 1.25" side to side (or ~1.5" point to point).  Actually nix that, here's Sir Forscale on a 1" square base.

To get a good idea of what the big ones were in metal, pick through both the Robot Supply Depot and the CAV Section of the store (existing players: see what I did there?).  Any of them that have a detatched hex base (such as Vanquisher 74) are on the same base that Emporer is.  A few may also have Bryangles, which are 0.5" apart and are good for gauging height.

That said, there is some rescaling work being done...some figures are getting smaller, and others are having their fluff adjusted.  Wouldn't hurt to poke CAVBOSS when he's not busy minding the kickstarter or sorting out the store misbehaving, maybe he can take a picture or two of the new Core Force stuff with a blank hex and the Bryangle template for point of reference.  I know that Emperor is the old metal one, and while I have Sir Forscale,  I'm having trouble translating him to Big Stompy Robots.

Of the ones I have:

- Tiamat is pretty meaty

- Nightshade and Sabretooth might be a little waifish for your liking.

- Duelist is up there with Wight.

- Mantis, Jaguar, Ogre, and Mastodon are all short and fat.

A better way would involve imposing some sort of high-tech looking grid on the store photos of the CAV models. -OR- Better still, build a 3D grid with 10mm squares in ZBrush, drop that into the 3D model, do an orthographic front-on render, and start putting the resulting  images into the online store as alternate pix (along with painted versions that are available for some models now).

That's what I would do.

Note & Aside to CAVBOSS and my other friends at Reaper: There is a way this photo could be improved. It would cost about 7 cents (plus the time and effort to re-shoot / re-post). But seven US pennies (you might get away with as few as five) would be needed.

  • Glue the pennies together in a stack and allow to dry.
  • Stand the pennies on edge, note they don't fall over easily because there are seven.
  • Stand the pennies in the photo next to and even with sir Forscale's right boot (preferably with Abe's face showing).
  • Re-shoot and re-post,

The result would be a for scale picture that included an object viewers (94% of potential viewers is my guess) could fish out of their pocket and hold in their hand

If viewers had that they'd have a very good, visceral sense, of: "how big is that?"

Just a thought.

(My 7 cents worth.)

Ronin               2 12/64th.†                   2.1875â€

Rhino               2 15/64th.†                   2.23437â€

Revenant         2 16/64th.†                   2.25â€

Tyrant              2 18/64th.†                   2.2812â€

Thanks folks,

That's the kind of info I need.

Watchman,

Super! I really appreciate the measurements. I'll get out my ruler tomorrow and do some comparisons.

You can upload them to photobucket or similar photo sharing sites and link them here.  I'd love to see those pics if you can get them.

Reviving this thread 6 years later...

Been away from gaming for a while but I'm slowly getting my son into it.  We played Mech Attack with my rebased Mechwarrior minis like my club used to...

https://www.chicagoskirmishwargames.com/blog/?s=mech+attack

...and it got me thinking about Bones CAVs again, and maybe painting something up.   It's not like I haven't got enough random-faction MW minis I could repaint, but some of these new CAV's look fantastic and possibly quite large.   I had established prior that the Emperor-or-larger is kind of my baseline for the size I'm looking for.  Some of the smaller CAV would be good as light mechs but I've already painted up a couple at past adepticons and Iv'e gotten a good handful in metal.  So my quesiton is this.

Are the new designs like the...

-Ceneturian

-Pillager

-Obake

-Gladiator II

-Enforcer

-Crusader

-Haunt (this one looks really cool)

... as big or bigger than the Emperor?  I'm generally going for bigger is better since my favorite MW Heavy and Assault mechs tend to be about 2.5 inches tall.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

The bases in the pictures suggest they are, but I thought I'd check.

Thanks!
