SPACE DRAGON'S ADVENTURE - ReaperCon 2015 Team Diorama

Recommended Posts

This project stemmed from two things, first off I sent Siri a dragon a while back on a whim since we were talking about Space Dragons and she painted him up and surprised me by sending it back to me!

Secondly, there was an announcement made from Heisler and Clever Crow about allowing "Team" entries into the ReaperCon 2015 Painting Contest.

I put it out to Siri that we could do a Team Diorama that brings the Space Dragon (SD) into contact with far away ancient civilizations, she loved the idea and we ended up with the plan to order figures. The scene we came up with would depict a portal that the SD coming through with a friend or two and visiting (unannounced) ancient Egypt. A surprised priestess and her guardian sphinx are also part of the plan going forward.

Figures included:

Egyptians -

02734: Egyptian Statue Anubis - Decoration (WIP W/ SIRI)
02928: Sobek Statue - Decoration (WIP W/ SIRI)
03007: Egyptian Cat Statue - Decoration (WIP W/ SIRI)
03008: Egyptian Jackal Statue - Decoration (WIP W/ SIRI)
03506: Egyptian Priestess and Baboon (baboon not in scene) - Surprised by unexpected visitors (WIP W/ SIRI)

14256: Sphinx, Nefsokar Monster - Protector of the Priestess (RECEIVED - SENDING TO SIRI SOON)

Visitors -

77108: Shadow Dragon - The one, the only SPACE DRAGON!!! I'll remove broccoli and base onto the diorama itself. (FINISHED, see below)

02637: Marcus Starsong - Will probably remove his staff, stands to the side of Kimberlee. (WIP W/ SIRI)
02391: Kimberlee the Fair - Will stand next to the SD with her hand outstretched to touch him. (WIP W/ SIRI)

Other things included-

  • Jars/Urns/Various other objects - Sculpted by Siri herself
  • Obelisk - from the Secret Weapon Bag o' Crap, will be smoothed out and painted as sandstone with hieroglyphs upon it, situated between the statues of Anubis and Sobek.
  • Galaxy Portal - Siri will draw it out on either canvas or plasticard (or something else that'll take the swirling galaxy nicely as freehand), I will do a small pour of water effects with realistic water to give it some shimmer and waves (think Stargate).
  • 2 walls - one on the left will be an arch with the portal, the back wall will probably go with some ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. The ground will be a courtyard.

We know there is a lot of time before ReaperCon 2015, but this is going to be a lengthy project to get right with some things being mailed back and forth, items being ordered, and wanting to make it look contest-worthy. We won't show off the finished product until AFTER RCon though.

We will both be posting our updates in this WIP thread and hope to get some great feedback (like always) from all you fine forumites out there!

I'm so jelly!! That's really cool you two!!

Excited to get started.

We are having almost all the figures shipped to Siri first, she'll do her part with them and send back to me (just better logistics). I'll send her the Sphinx and the Obelisk along with the materials for the Galaxy Portal. Then I'll paint up my figures from the project, work on the basing, the walls, and attach figures. Will get other finished stuff back from Siri and attach as well.

Thanks for the comments/compliments everyone! This really will be a lot of fun to do as a team project with someone as talented as Siri. We both have our strengths and I think along with amazing comments/advice/critiques on here we'll have something special to enter at ReaperCon '15.

The idea was to build a little diorama with the header "Make peace, not war"

I called the result "Flower Power". I think the mage is from Reaper, but I'm not sure. The orc and the wraith are both from an really old range from GW. I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Hello everyone! Major post today, I completed the Cat Critters display base. I went for a simple arrangement this time. It’s a thematic chest-like display board. I opted for a Roman style setup; mosaic pavement tiling, marble pillars and royal purple flowers.

It was interesting to work with different product from many companies on this project. The CatCritters are from Darksword Miniatures, they were all sculpted by talented David Summers.

Here’s for the technical information; The marble lions are from Reaper Miniatures, 77341 and were Sculpted by Geoff Valley. The pillars are from Wizkids. I made the pavement texture using a Green Stuff World rolling pin. The background wall was made with a Town Square from Tabletop World. The cavalry base I mounted the lion statues on are from Games Workshop. The synthetic grass and tuft are from the Army Painter, Woodland Scenics and Green Stuff World. Lastly, I made the vine-like tree with real roots. To build the board I also used a pine plank, Masonite hard board, Milliput, Jovi Plastilina, Green Stuff natural stones and sand. To paint the models and the display base I used Reaper Miniatures MSP paint and Citadel inks.

We are going to visit my BILs home next week so I wanted to make something to thank them.  Fortunately his wife adores penguins so an idea was born.

On the ice flows of the Antarctic the penguins fight a constant war of survival.  But when things look grim and the darkest night seems to turn against them one penguin will rise above the others to smite their foes and have the way through the darkness.

When she appears the others are driven to seek out the ancient battle gear, the location passed down by generations of penguins and like drones they come to anoint their emperor and dress him to do battle with his foes...

On a side note, the bonsium in bones 4 is much harder to cut and I am afraid I made a rather large offering to the blood god of miniatures. Fortunately I didn't nick any of the working bits.  Unfortunately it was close and I am going to feel it in the morning.

I sort of fell off the WIP thread because life made this take longer than I had originally intended. The minis are by Bombshell, and I have to say that they were a pleasure to paint. I will be picking up a few more at ReaperCon, for sure.
The scenery is by Secret Weapon, Shadow's Edge, and Woodland Scenics. The base is from a cheap 3 pack from Michael's. All paint is from Reaper.
I'll probably end up staining or painting the base, but I haven't yet decided which way to go with it.
It feels really good to finish something for the MSPOpen. In hindsight, I probably should've started with something smaller, and worked my way up to this, but meh. I'm pretty proud of this.

Here my version of the "Dance of death" from Reaper Bones IV.
I'm still very hesitant to show it off because till the last second I was really insecure about the outcome.
First of all, the palette: right now I kinda like it, but I'm not 100% sure about 1. the base and 2. the color of the lower dragon. My first idea was to paint it white, and make it reminiscent of a battle between England's white dragon and Wales red dragon. But to paint white is always a challenge and given I'm not that familiar with the material, I decided to go with the other hard color to paint.
Now it just depicts a fictional encounter between two forgotten realms dragons: Tchazzar, infamous red wyrm, and Mergandevindasander, rumoured to have lavender eyes.
And secondly, I think I'll never fully appreciate bones... I like the fact that it's cheap, but the texture is just not the same and there's something very off on its maleability. It always makes me get tired of painting it and abandon ship without giving as much attention to details as I usually do.
IMO those two dragons are pretty nice, and if I had to object to something, it will be about their tails, a bit too plain and simple.
      Any feedback incredibly welcome ^^
And if you have instagram and want to follow my gallery there... even more grateful: it's @albertnyarla
