Swords against Chaos

Recommended Posts

Otto will carefully scout the woods around the trails, looking for other's traps, and an Woodsmen's Signs left on the trees. He will then set a couple of snares near any rabbit or squirrel dens he sees. He quietly prays that Taal will spread a carpet of leaves and soft moss in the path of Ragnar, to quiet his passage.

The group has moved away from the river to a small waterfall in the forest. The path you are on crosses over the creek that runs from the pool at the base of the waterfall. A beautiful forest scene has opened up. But though Otto has scouted it seems there is little game in the area. It seems that there is alot of human activity in the area. At least on the trails.

Otto halts, signals Ragnar and Hollin, and points to the marks on a tree. Quietly, he tells them,"Keep your eyes and ears ready. We aren't alone here. There are signs of smugglers."

Otto then places his snares in his kitbag, and prepares a bolt in his crossbow. continuing to look foe tracks, he approaches the waterfall from the right side.

"There's something hidden under the waterfall," Ragnar says as he wades the stream. Upon reaching the cache, he picks it up.

Smoothly draws his bow, strings it, and prepares for trouble as well. keeping his arrow nocked, but bow unbent for the moment.

Ragnar finds himself holding a small crate (2' x 2' x 18') in which are five bottles of very fine white Bretonnian wine. A finer vintage than one would normally find at an Inn, more of a nobleman's wine. And there are no tax or excise markings. Further under the waterfall are more crates.

Otto feels that for the moment no one is in the vicinity. And yet here is a small fortune in wine, unguarded. What to do?

"Ach! It's just a bunch o' stinkin' wine!" Ragnar exclaims, disgustedly. "Maybe there's some good ale or beer in some o' these crates instead o' this girly elf-water!"

He then proceeds to open each crate. If he finds something more to his taste, he will slug some down, and briefly be of good spirit. If not, he will grumble and mutter about smugglers not knowing the difference between their bunghole and a hole in the ground.

Otto, ducking the shards of crate-scrap flying all about, picks up a discarded bottle and throws it to Hollin. He also takes one for himself. "To the Emperor's health, if not his treasury".

Turning to his berserk companion, he says "Come on, Ragnar, take a bottle and trade it to a school-lad in the next town, for a REAL drink....."

Hollin laughs and catches the bottle one handed and looks at it he hmms quietly, then starts looking for other signs in the area... like who would have put this stash here, things like that.

"Let us hope neither emporer's men, nor these men return while we are here, my friends."

"I better find somethin' ta hit soon, or I'm just gonna start cuttin' down trees." says Ragnar as he stomps off after the others.

Not far beyond the waterfall the paths split. One follows the riverbank, one turns down to the river bank and the third branch heads away from the river, in the direction of the road (this was the path that the Captain had advised you to take). There is obvious sign that each road has plenty of business.

The road that parallels the river bank has a sign posted. There is an outline of an upraised hand and the literate elder races can read "Stop, No Entrance, Hunting Grounds of the Count" And below this is a smaller sign carved far more delicately it says "Any living creature on these grounds can and will be hunted for the joy of the Count"

As you stand at the crossroads you can hear voices. There are people heading toward the crossroads from the river.

I need to know what items you are holding. I assume at the present that at least one of you is holding a bottle of wine, and weapons seem to be in evidence as well."

Hollin has a bottle in each pocket of his long coat, and his sword at the ready, (this being under a waterfall... breaking the arrows out wouldn't work so well)
