Overall, he was a fairly quick paint job - maybe 4-6 hours total.  I tried to really push the contrast on him.  I'd be interested in hearing feedback on how well I did.

The Matte Varnish I’m using does weird things – it’s super-matte, but it looks a little bit grainy.

And then, of course, there’s this picture which look AWFUL.  Thank goodness it doesn’t look like that in hand.  I will need to experiment a bit to see if I can’t figure out how to get the super-matte properties without the grainy properties.

I think you did a great job on the contrast as that was the first thing I noticed. "Hey! Very clean lines, great highlighting, and great shadows!" As far as the Matte finish, did you use a spray on or a brush on? Either way, maybe shaking it more? I think I saw someone suggest putting the bottle/can in a plastic bag and letting it sit in hot water for 5 minutes or so. I tend to use Testor's Dullcoat inside to get a great finish and annoy  my wife in the process...  ^_^

The varnish is Liquitex Matte Varnish applied undiluted with an airbrush.  When brushed on, it provides a satin finish much like Reaper's Matte Sealer.  (I didn't want to get the airbrush out again for the base, so that is the same stuff brushed on).

Oooooh! I need to get an airbrush. I'm going to start researching them soon. I think dsmiles is correct in that thinning will help out tons! We had a similar problem a few days ago with a LVHP airgun earlier this week. It likes to sputter out globs unless it's thinned enough. I tend to thin out my sealers even though I brush them on.
