I think that is going to work great with the pit. I typed in Sunken Floors in Houses and came up with THIS. If you find any of it useful. The Globe, by the way, LOOKS great - good idea! I may have to take that: If you have a WIP pictures you could post on the that piece I would really appreciated it.

Hi Devin,

I made a second globe and made pictures during the process.

The materials are: a wooden ball (35mm), a couple of flat(ish) beads, a thin wooden rod, a plastic tube that fits around the rod and 2mm thick pvc foam board. (you could also use plastic card or thick cardboard)

Measured out the inside diameter (42mm) and drawn the pieces

Cut out all the pieces and glued the beads to the ball. The beads center the rod in the ball (the hole in the ball is way to big)

Glued the pieces of tube to the rod and the curve to the pieces of tube.

The left Globe is the result, the main differences are the more elaborate base and the curve is 4mm instead of 5mm.

Hope this helps.

Made the floor of the library, complete with a pit for the globe. I found a use for the tiles a tested for the floor. The walls of the pit are lined with light colored tiles. The floor will be a dark chocolate brown so it should be a nice contrast.

I am not sure yet about the railing around the pit. Don't think it is needed.

Still to do: A stair down to the lower level. Railing on the spiral staircase. One or more tables, chairs. Some more bookcases. And about a hundred books. Oh and paint the lot :;):

Started the books for the bookcases. These are made with a variation on the techniques ub3r_n3rd linked to, thanks for that.

The books are still unpainted, just balsa wood and brown paper.

Did some tests and calculations and I think I will need about 350 books

I'd not do the railing near the globe, just doesn't make sense for the piece I think.

350 books?? WOW! Happy you found the link to be helpful, I can see balsa wood and brown paper to be much easier to do, especially in that amount!

Maybe put other things on the shelves, not just books (skulls/potions/diagrams)? Or put some books in haphazardly/size ways/leave some open spaces?

I like the look, I don't like the placement. I think something like that should be in the center of the room (difficult I know since we are only getting half a room) and aesthetically it would have been cool to have a round pit, and especially to have access to it from all sides. You could have also mimicked the circular stair by using a small curved stair down to the bottom of the pit. But, still looks great!
