Hey, folks. Picked up some kobolds for the PF game I'm running, and I finally got them painted. These are the metal set of four, by Ben Siens, from the Dark Heaven line.

I'm afraid my photos are letting me down even more than my painting skills. I haven't figured out my setup, yet. I was really proud of how I highlighted these guys with orange highlights--I'm still working to eschew the too-white highlights and all--but they're washing pretty well in these pictures. Everything I'm trying lately tends to be either too light or too dark. Hopefully some of it's getting through, though.

Thanks for looking. Comments and criticism are very welcome. I've got some Bones kobolds still to paint, so any tips however specific would be most helpful.

Nice work on these guys! I like your color choices a bunch; the greeny-teal cloth pops really well.

I see some of your highlight work, and it looks pretty good. Something that's affecting your photos is the glossy finish on the minis...I can't tell if it's just the way your paints dry, or if you put a gloss sealer down, but hitting the minis with a coat of Testors Dullcote or similar will help the camera see the highlights you painted instead of the gloss reflections.

I like what you have on the metal as well. The wash method is simple, but effective.

How are you achieving highlights and shadows? I used to always work from the bottom up (basecoats in shadow, then up to midtone and up to highlight), but I found I work better working from mid down to shadow and then up to highlights. I tried starting at the top and working down, too...you may find switching it up like this will introduce you to a groove you didn't know you had. Worth trying on the Bones...if you don't like the results, it's easy to get more!

This cheapo paint does get glossy, sometimes, though these guys aren't looking nearly that bad in person. They do still need sealing--I've got a generic Wal*Mart kind of clear matte I'm going to try. Perhaps I should get on that, heh.

I'm mostly trying to wash my shadows in. I'm just now trying to layer stuff up here and there. It is difficult on my brain. I have tried it from bottom up; I'll try going from the middle, too. Honestly, there's no trying anything that can hurt for me, right now--I don't know which what works, so I pretty much have to try everything. Which is fine as long as I don't get chicken, which I tend to do. Have to watch myself.

Thanks!
