Stones Dungeon Tiles - Frontline Games

I have to admit I'm of two minds of. Kickstarters that grow to huge proportions vs Kickstarters that reach smaller goals.

While the larger Kickstarters obviously have a larger variety of rewards on offer and so may draw in more backers, the painful reality is that I could only afford a small fraction of the rewards on offer so once I've reached that level having anything more added to the campaign simply isnt going to get any not money out of me. And since much of what is produced through kickstarter never gets to retail locally, it's unlikely I'll ever buy what I missed and so those companies don't ever get anymore money from me.

However a creator who runs smaller and more frequent kickstarters for his products is more likely to get more of my money over the long term.

The other painful reality is that if KS grows too large, the creator's going to have a harder time fulfilling the project than if it's small. We already know the larger the scope of the project (ie. more SG's reached), the more likely and longer a project will be delayed. I've seen projects run out of money in the end because the creator spent too much money at the beginning. Add-ons are usually diminishing returns, costing more for the backers, and for the creator, compared to the original product.

Affordability is correct. DF is promising a bigger KS, but I don't think bigger is better when a backer's cash flow isn't letting him make a purchase. On top of this, KS is not a store, and backers should not be risking a great deal of money on creators with less KS and retail experience. Running (and fulfilling) a series of KS is less sexy that a bang-up blow-out campaign, but that's exactly what Johnny Lauck, of MegaMiniatures will be doing. JL has 15+ years of miniatures casting experience and fulfilled his first KS in two weeks. I guess the only good news about terrain KS is that if one company's terrain doesn't hit retail, another terrain KS will be around soon enough. Compared to boardgames and miniatures, terrain, at least for gaming purposes and at the present, are relatively interchangeable.

I pretty sure I'm making a mistake by not pledging for the goblin and ogre lairs, but I'm sticking to the basic tiles and doors because they're the closest to being finished so have the least risk. Doesn't help that I spent *way* too much money on boardgames this holiday season. How do you save money by spending it all?

That probably does the most to help fund their new Stones line anyway. Frontline Games has been selling terrain for a long time. I don't think there's much risk in pledging for the resin and metal sets. That seems to be what they're known for making. I'm just way more interested in the plastic line than anything else. A whole gaming table of monsters, dungeon tiles and terrain made of Bonesium sounds awesome. I'll giggle like a little girl when I finally get to use it! girl_haha_zpsf5kcimei.gif

I really wish they had the stretches written out with prices and ready to post on time as well. I mean I understand the not having pictures, but it's hard for pedgers to pledge when prices aren't posted. Overall I'm really happy for them that it had such an explosive end. I hope they do another KS down the road. Just hope they avoid the holidays next time, and of couse DF3 which is coming in the spring with some interesting sewers and castles.

So... as a newbie to this, how does the billing work - do we receive an invoice right at Kickstarter end, based on our pledge amount? Can a pledge be lowered or increased after the time ends?

I'd really like to go for more of the new tiles (the wood, and the water ones especially)... but the late updates means I simply wasn't budgeted for them, unfortunately. Really wish the timing on this was pushed back a little more - especially with the later updates/goals, I'd love to have an extra week for some breathing room to calculate a new pledge! As it is, it's hard to even figure out what to pledge for an order...

You are charged right when the project ends, and are no longer able to alter your original pledge amount.

Most projects will allow extra funds to be added after the project has ended (like for more add-ons you wanted but couldn't afford at the time), and Frontline has said that they are working hard to make that possible for this project, but don't have anything definitive yet. It sounds like they are planning on it, though.

Don't forget to add the extra shipping for each of the add-ons you selected.

EDIT: Just found a more solid answer in the KS comments:

Will there be a pledge manager afterwards that allows us to add items, or are we locked in at our pledge total?

@Jarrett Messing. Yes there will be a pledge manager, we are working on that also, it will be part of the Stonesterrain.com. We are still working that out also but you should be able to.

Since I'm about out of gaming cash I'll have to settle for:

 1x Early Bird Core Set
 1x Extra Dungeon Tiles
 1x 20 Wooden Floor Tiles
 1x Grimes goblin mini
 1x Goblin Lair & Accessories

I'll add these after the holidays are over and my bank account gets out of the burn ward.
1x Underlays & Overlays
2x 4 Round Columns
1x 20 Cobblestone tiles (if they get altered)
1x Stones Gaming Mat
2x 5 Crates
1x 5 Barrels
1x 80 Transparent Tile Set
1x Ogre Lair

Yeah! Darn first-time KickStarters! :D

Looking forward to DF3 as well. But... castles, villages *and* sewers? How am I going to afford all the savings?? :D

Well looks like growth has leveled out. I'm in for EB + BF stones + goblin lair. That's all the wallet could support and you have no idea what unspeakable promises were made to my wife and the organ broker to get that much!

Hopefully they do a backer kit and I can pick up a planks set, small tiles set, and other lairs when the wallet and incision in my back recover next month.

Yeah... Few Pics of DF sewers on their forum look pretty nice, and I belive it was Stephan there that already said in the forums, "better start saving your acorns for spring"

Color me surprised, this finished MUCH stronger than I was anticipating! I really wish we could have made it to the $100K unlock, though; I would have kept my EB then. Ah well, it's not like I don't have, um, 20 other pieces of tiny furniture (yay Hirst Art things!).

Final count is:

$7 - shipping

$48 - 40 Stones

$17 - 10 wooden doors

$8 - Inlays

$27 - 20 wood tiles

$32 - 20 clear water tiles

$2 - Grimes (sorry Mr. Stones, but Grimes costs 2/3 less than you!)

Grand total of $141.

Given that this is our first real venture into dungeon terrain, I think that's pretty good as far as the bare basics. The only thing I really wish I could have added was the case, but I had to cut something, and that was the only thing I could get at another time.

I've ended up dropping out.  Between Christmas expenses and the fact that I already have a crap ton of DF tiles, I just can't justify it.

Um.  Well, it looks like I might have screwed up somewhere.  Because I just got an e-mail saying that thanks to me and other backers, Stones has funded.  Going back to the Stones page says "You're a backer!  You pledged $100."  On the other hand, I haven't yet  No, there it is, payment confirmation.  Well, looks like I'm getting some more dungeon tiles.  Yippee.

Watching from the sidelines here, but very nice to see this end so strongly!

Dungeon Tiles by Walter had $10 shipping. While the KS has ended, try dropping him a line and see if you can still get in!

EDIT: $10 *International* shipping. Was replying to Trodax's post.
