Question 24: What class of miniature do you typically purchase and/or paint (PC, Humanoids, Monsters, Dragons, etc.. Feel free to make your own categories, just define what they are)?

"Just about anything..."  &  "...all over the place..."  &  "...many types of figures..."   would all apply to me as well.

Lately

This year â€”recent purchases— have been a split between Steampunk Men-of-War and assorted Fantasy Creatures.

Long Term

Historically â€”looking back at my models collection—  it has been:

1st - Fantasy Medieval (by an extremely wide margin)

2nd - Warships â€” almost entirely Steampunk Ironclads (distant second)

3rd - Science Fiction about equal parts CAV, Battletech, SpaceMarines (a very small third)

I'm definitely in the "interesting sculpts/fun-to-paint" camp, although the subject matter of those interesting pieces tends to vary greatly depending on my current mood.

Which is why I have a small handful of sci-fi and modern minis as well as my traditional fantasy stuff. I can never tell from day to day what's going to follow me home from the store.

I will buy and paint (or at least plan to paint, maybe think about it) just about any genre as long as it looks cool, I can afford it, and it is something I could potentially use on the table.  I don't have the time or money to spend on Shadowbox Divas that just sit up there and look pretty.  My minis can look good, but they need to be blue collar working class minis.

If we're talking about RPGs, most are monsters. But I also play wargames, so a large percentage are going to be "troops..."

My 4E dual-handaxe ranger Molly was named after Molly Hatchet, lol...  I was converting the 3.5 version of the character (a male named Hatchet) to 4E, and happened to be reading an article somebody had linked about the LIzzie Borden story at the same time a Molly Hatchet song started playing on the radio... And so I ended up with Molly Borden, a half-psychotic, slightly feral female dual-handaxe-wielding ranger, who still carried the cursed(?) magical hatchet (passed down through six generations of her family) with which she'd killed her parents.

I'll add Meat Loaf and Conan to the usual suspects list of Vallejo, Frazetta and Molly Hatchet, lol.

I tend to buy PC-type figures most in the fantasy and steampunk genres. I am big on rule of cool.

Underwater minis catch my eye, too.

Overall, I buy with game use in mind for playing I Eberron. It would be nice to actually paint more than I have so I can use more in game, lol.

Currently, I'm primarily painting mini's for games.  Basically, that means Zombicide (soooooo many zombies) and Deadzone.

In terms of what I would buy to paint (if not for games), then it would be primarily fantasy and sci fi.  Probably PC types who look distinct rather than goblin number xx.

Not that I have anything against goblins (please don't steal my paint!).

Priority purchases consist of what speaks to me when I see it. Sometimes it's obscure. Second are for characters I'll play in DND and third are NPCs/creatures the Mr needs for his games. The majority of my minis end up being female with a few male minis.

Despite my recent fantasy-binge for a Pathfinder game I am planning, I tend to buy weird minis. Weirder the better. Aberrations, Elder Beings of various sorts, half-cyborg mutants, infected, alien-as-can-be. I like some of the Dark Age (Brom version) minis, and some of the Carnivale. Been trying to snatch up some of the pewter mutants from the original issue of Sedition Wars, while I can still find them (I've read the newer plastics are very bad casts).

I am recently BIG into the re-issues and new models for the revamped Cephalyx faction for Warmachine, such as this fellow here, and this fine hulking beast.

EDIT: Of course, I also tend to buy "survivor" style humans for said weird beasties to chase around and torment.

I play a lot of horror RPGs.

I want to add to my previous answer. To ensure that I keep looking at a wide variety of manufacturers for a mix of purchases I keep a notepad file with every one I come across listed in it. Every month or so I load the file up in a piece of randomising software which shuffles the order and buy something from whichever one comes out on top (if they've got nothing I'm interested in they get removed from the list).

The last couple were Brother Vinnis so I picked up this rather nice female mercenary, and Knight Models from who I got Harley Quinn.

Next one is Avatars of War.

Historically, I've mostly painted PCs of the fantasy bent. I would like to paint more monsters, because I enjoy painting monsters a great deal. Characters are fun, monsters are funner.

Also, Mouslings. Which fall into the Best category. ^_^
