I want to add to my previous answer. To ensure that I keep looking at a wide variety of manufacturers for a mix of purchases I keep a notepad file with every one I come across listed in it. Every month or so I load the file up in a piece of randomising software which shuffles the order and buy something from whichever one comes out on top (if they've got nothing I'm interested in they get removed from the list).

The last couple were Brother Vinnis so I picked up this rather nice female mercenary, and Knight Models from who I got Harley Quinn.

Next one is Avatars of War.

Yes!

I have also started to sample different manufacturers. In fact, I just ordered my first Avatars of War mini yesterday.

I tend toward fantasy.  As a long time D&D DM and now Pathfinder GM, I gravitate towards monsters and things I can use to challenge my players.  The PCs I paint are typically for my players, if I am in the mood.  I absolutely LOVE dragons and have way more in my collection that I will ever be able to paint in two lifetimes.

Lately, my buying has been limited to figures I need for Warlord or CAV.  I've been filling out my Korbolas and Necropolis armies mostly.  I seldom buy anything else now.  Every time I think to do so, I realize that I have no time to paint with all the sculpts I'm doing.  I have bought a few recently as reference art for sculpting, just so I can get a close look at how others have done some very unique things. (Right now, I am working on being able to do scales like Julie does. Nobody does scales like she does.  )

I mostly paint fantasy miniatures that would fit in an old school, low level look. I try to buy more "realistic" looking miniatures when it comes to scale (Red Box).

All of my stuff is for display (currently) because I don't have a miniature gaming group. Although I often debate making a small skirmish force to play some unknown miniature skirmish game.

I'll add Meat Loaf and Conan to the usual suspects list of Vallejo, Frazetta and Molly Hatchet, lol.

Nice! Oh man, Conan. If we want to start getting into comics...Bernie Wrightson is another one taking a lot of blame for my tastes...probably explains why I dig the dark side, Kingdom Death, etc. All those EC horror and war comics! For those unfamiliar, run a google image search on Bernie Wrightson and dig some of the most amazing art ever.

TS - check out some of Roberto Chaudon's and Stephane Simon's work for Mierce. They're a couple of my current favorites and quite good at scales.

Thinking back on when I first started getting interested in RPG. Elmore was a huge influence, but I always loved Frazetta. Vallejo was, and is amazing. To a lesser degree the Hildebrandt Brothers (Shannara Books anyone?). As I've gotten older and my tastes have matured I like more "pulp" style art work. What is really amazing to me though are the amount of stupidly talented artists that are out there now, or maybe the work is just more accessible because of the Interwebz.

My miniature collection is not as extensive as many others here since I only started collecting them last year, but aside from generally trying to round it out I am really drawn to creepy and odd monsters. I just hit up the cyber-monday miniatures sales on FRP and Miniature Market and one of my favorites I found is this guy (reaper Wendigo).

I paint almost exclusively fantasy because that's what seems to capture my interest the most.  I tried to paint sci-fi once, many years ago, but I just couldn't get into it. (In those days the range of available sci-fi figures wasn't particularly inspiring.)

Serious answer: fantasy and sci-fi. In that order. More fantasy, though. My interest in sci-fi is waning/ taking a different path since GW has gotten so...nevermind, I'm being nice here. So yeah, fantasy.

Not so serious answer:

Buy---anything that's not nailed down; and I carry tools in my car...

Paint---let's define that a little, shall we? Does this mean plan to paint, or actually really put real paint on?
