Mad Jack
Did a bit of a Boston theme on my last dvd marathon - Black Irish, The Departed, and a couple episodes of Leverage... You might not know Black Irish, but if you're Irish, or from the area, it's definitely worth checking out - it also stars Brendan Gleeson, Michael Angarano, Melissa Leo, Tom Guiry, Emily VanCamp and Michael Rispoli, so it's packed full of good actors... It's kind of a dark film, though. Edited November 4, 2017 by Mad Jack
Cyradis
One of the ads last night was for a movie I think called Downsized. It seems like one that we mini painters will be obligated to see.

It wasn't terrible. Not good by any measure, but not terrible. Very low budget, but fun if not taken seriously. I got some smiles out of that one as well. Cheesy brain candy.
Dilvish the Deliverer
Taking Awesome Wife and Daughter, The Second, to see Thor in less than 30 minutes. Should be fun! 5
Citrine
Last night we watched Bone Tomahawk, a horror western movie with Kurt Russel. It was very good, acting was excellent, but it is not rated. I would say the horror was mostly from a few episodes of extreme violence.

Sanael
We just watched the recent live-action Disney's Beauty and the Beast. What a terrible movie. The whole thing felt lazy: compare the "Provincial Town" opening sequence of the original animated and the new...Belle interacts with things, it is interesting, entertaining, in the original. The new is just "this group of people sings as Belle walks past, then that group sings while Belle walks past." Compare the opening expository scenes...the original handles the exposition simply, with some gorgeous stained-glass still frames, and the new uses eyeshadow! and boring mass ballroom choreo! to make the exposition muddy and frenetic. For a musical, it never decided how the music fit into the world...sometimes the songs were tacked on and sometimes they were voiceover and sometimes theywere almost dialogue. And they had no internal consistency: "Be Our Guest" was explicitly set up as an attempt to entertain and delight Belle, but half the number takes place off the far end of the table or in the kitchen where Belle can't see it. Why do we feel the need to apologise for fairy tales being fairy tales? Let Gaston be a jerk. Let Belle's father be slightly daft but very caring. Let Le Fou be an invertebrate lackey. None of their "character development" served the story being told. Fairy tales are effective because they are simple...let them be simple. Gaston's death was an afterthought. It was neither interesting nor cathartic. Belle was mostly wooden, largely because Ms.Watson was never given much beyond a green screen and a tennis ball to act with (seriously, the amount of this that was animated really stretches the "live action" premise). I did enjoy Le Fou paying everyone in the tavern to help cheer up Gaston, that was well done, and I liked several of the character designs for the servants. But that about covers it. ...and Lion King gets this treatment next? If you could see me, you would be seeing my skeptical face. 3
Dai-Mongar
Watched Thor last night with the wife for our anniversary. First time out to the movies since Dr Strange. Couldn't help thinking of this every time Korg spoke... (Little bit of NSFW language) It's quite disarming hearing a distinctly Kiwi accent in a big Hollywood movie. Takes one out of the experience a little.
TheAuldGrump
I didn't believe it possible - a Thor movie that did not bore me to tears! (The Marvel Thor is not recommended to anyone that knows anything about Norse mythology. At all.) The Auld Grump - to be honest, I always liked Loki better than Thor, even in the Lokasenna. (Which could be retitled 'Loki Wigs Out.')

(Which could be retitled 'Loki Wigs Out.') The Marvel Thor movies are fairly faithful to the character as envisioned by Jack Kirby... who knew better. Kirby was quite familiar with Norse mythology, and reimagined the character as Science Fiction Thor. His original "Tales Of Asgard" comics are jaw droppers, but still lots of fun. As long as you're not expecting any kind of faithfulness to the actual mythos. I find it difficult to imagine Tom Hiddleston giving birth to the Fenris Wolf, for that matter. Just classify it as "two different Thors," and you will be fine. Although I do wish Kirby could have lived to see the Thor movies. It's probably too much to expect that he would have got PAID for them...

We don't like the Sherlock series with Cumberbatch either though. If you like that series, you will probably love this movie. If you don't, stay away. We do really like the Sherlock series Elementary, and the classic series of movies with Jeremy Brett. Mmmm Cumberbatch! Grump has Brett on DVD. But he has a whole bookcase of nothing but Sherlock. Brett gets pulled out most often though. He even has a horrible SF animated Sherlock set in the future.
Dr.Bedlam
I have now watched Megamind twice. It has the distinction of being only one of two movies that had Will Ferrell in them that I liked. While it's funny... particularly as a fan of mad scientists in general... I have concluded that Metro City is doomed at some point beyond the end credits. Megamind is an idiot. GREAT soundtrack, though. 1

He just LOOKS shifty, even telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. But.. Fenris Pup! Citrine
We watched Baby Driver last night, we thought it was kinda meh. It might have been because the first part of the movie it was kinda boring other than the awesome car chases, while the last part turned into hard R which didn't really fit with the style of the rest of the movie. Everything being set to music reminded me constantly that I was watching a movie, so I never got really into it.
