Gyrfalcon Gryphon

Alright. This took some heavy research on how to do a gryphon in a style like a raptor. I finally settled on the very striking appearance of the Gyrfalcon. I figured either it would look horrible, mediocre or wonderful. I personally don't think it is the best looking version, but I am certainly pleased with how it came out all things considered.

 

I used the white Gyrfalcon with black markings for this with a few things to help keep a bit of contrast in a few areas.

 

 

Please have some patience with the pictures. I only have a 2DS instead of my camera as my former roommate keeps "forgetting" to check for it so I can pay to have it shipped to me. Anyways, as I said I am pretty please with how he came out looking for a first attempt at making a gyrfalcon gryphon.

I am seriously considering doing more gryphons like this. Do the various birds of prey that strike my fancy as gryphons. And maybe eventually do the front of as standard with various cat markings on that back as I gain confidence in painting patterns.

 If you need good reference pics of ospreys, I have literally a couple hundred of them... (One of my other hobbies...)

Osprey are pretty birds. Buck Lake High School near here has a nesting pair on a pole

Osprey are pretty, but I did not feel confident enough for doing the margins so I selected the gyrfalcon. It was fun to learn about them as well. i like to read up on the animals I use for inspiration and they are fascinating as raptors go. I need to get another griffon.

 

Then I will select my next raptor to use for a gryphon.

Is that one bone, metal, or not reaper? Nice job, on the patterning. I am assuming the poor image is washing out a lot of the shading.

 

Though as a suggestion from way too much experience with large birds, what looks like a mid slate blue from a distance is actually a light tan overlay over a much darker grey core. It gives the impression of a very strong highlight at the top of the beak and claw,even though it's light passing through the translucent portion.

It is the Bones Griffon. 

 

Huh. I had not realized that fact. I was going off pictures of them. I'll experiment with it next time to see if I can get a more realistic look to the beak in the future.
